Great performance, coating wearing off in less than a year I got this a year ago because it fits perfectly with my single serve coffee maker. It does a great job of keeping coffee hot all morning. I have always hand washed it, but within a year the clear coating on the outside has started peeling, and for that only three stars. I'm probably going to just strip the coating off now and go with bare metal or refinish it. 3Excellent Travel Mug (I don't want a thermos/insulated bottle) This is an excellent travel mug. I was NOT looking for a thermos or insulated bottle. I was initially deterred by its rating not as high as other Zojirushi "mugs" (actually they are more like "bottles"), but I was not looking for a bottle type of mug. The lower ratings were mainly due to complaints about leaks or its (hot) temperature retention (the cold retention is excellent). Mine does not leak. The leaking may be due to the gasket not probably installed (you can just follow the instructions to fit it in properly). As for hot temperature retention, it is among the best for "travel mugs". If you really want the best temperature retention, then you should consider the thermos/insulated bottle types.The pluses are: very good temperature retention for a travel mug (very good for hot and excellent for cold); lighter weight even with a lid with excellent drinking/locking mechanism (my plain Starbucks stainless steel 16 oz mug is heavier); large opening for filling and easy cleaning (no need to use a bottle brush); a well-designed lid with locking/drinking mechanism; slick-steel internal finish (very easy to clean and little or no odor retention from your previous beverage). 5How did they improve on near perfection? They did with this new mug model! I love it. I had one of the previous models that I loved but this one is even better. Since they've widened the bottle the overall height was reduced so it not only fits perfectly in my cup holder but it also fits perfectly into my coffee maker so I can now have it brew directly into the mug -- something I couldn't do with previous versions! I love the chocolate color and the fact that the lid locks in place when open so it wont fall forward when drinking out of it. Same unbelievable super long time for keeping things hot or cold. Who would have thought that they could improve on such an awesome product? -- But they DID! 5Excellent cup that is suitable for lab/plant safety rules If you are looking for a quality coffee holder to take your own coffee to work, that is suitable for laboratory/manufacturing safety rules - this is a good choice. Not touted (it should be) is that the drinking lip is fully enclosed by the lid - a must in many companies if you want to take your coffee into a laboratory or out on the plant floor (so that chemicals can't settle on the part your mouth connects to). The stainless steel is high quality compared to other type cups I've used - don't fret over not cleaning in a dishwasher, you can still put the top in the dishwasher, the base doesn't need it - after a month of use, black coffee has not stained the inside at all -still perfectly shiny in there - and a simple wash with soap and water suffices. 5Finally! I have a travel mug that fits under ... Finally! I have a travel mug that fits under my Keurig (and Bunn MCF). Keeps my coffee steaming for 8 hours, maybe longer if I didn't leave the flip top open while drinking. The build seems solid, the walls are thinner than most of my vacuum sealed mugs. The outer surface is a little slippery, doesn't give me a sure grip and I worry about dropping and denting the mug.Based on other reviews, I wanted to test out the potential for leaking. I followed Zojirushi's instructions, lined up the top with the label while closed and locked. When I got to the check if it's leaking by turning it upside down....POP came the top and hot liquid all over the sink. I've since determined that if you leave the lid open while tightening the cap, it allows just enough pressure/steam to escape to prevent the cap from "blowing-off" when turned upside down. I haven't had any leaks since. Btw mine's made it Thailand.Update 5 Nov: Following my dutiful routine of "venting" while screwing on the top, I've had two inadvertent POPs this week. I don't think my coffee was any hotter than normal, but it is quite a shock when your driving along and the top goes Kapow. I'm going to have to side with other reviewers and not place this next to or in items that can get ruined. 5Works perfectly with an AeroPress! I bought this model so that I would be able to use my AeroPress Coffee Maker and press coffee directly into the vacuum travel mug. The setup worked perfectly, no need to use an intermediate vessel or funnel! It was really stable during the press and this mug probably a little easier to clean with the wider opening. Some say that it doesn't keep coffee hot for as long than the narrow-mouth versions but I'm willing to give up that bit of efficiency for convenience. 5Beautifully designed and crafted, keeps drinks warm a very long time, and DOES NOT LEAK! This mug is made with exquisite attention to fit and finish, and most importantly it DOES NOT LEAK! As long as the two rubber gaskets are in place (they are removable for washing) and you don't fill over the max fill line, when the top is closed the mug can be sideways in a bag, upside down, shaken around, and it will not leak. The lock switch is easy to use with one hand and provides extra security against accidental opening. The flip-top bumped my nose until I realized that there is a detent, and if I either press the button and let the top fly open all the way or push the top back gently by hand until it hits the detent, it will stay back and not fall onto my nose. The rubber gaskets are wisely brown so they don't show coffee stains and when new they smelled mildly of jasmine (really!) rather than petroleum. The Slicksteel interior does actually help reduce staining and make cleaning easier. The vacuum insulation is excellent--this mug keeps my coffee hot all morning and drinkably warm into the afternoon. It is lightweight versus the lost Thermos mug it replaced. It fits in my car's cupholders and feels good in my hand. There is no handle, but the glossy finish and slight bulge near the top make it easy to hold onto. I cannot recommend this mug enough. It is a gem and to me was worth every penny. 5Was disappointed I was so excited to get this beautiful travel mug to take to work. Ive have a 12 oz for 3 years that works so well at keeping coffee hot all day I still happily cant believe it. I bought this because i lost my original 12 oz, and it was a tad too small. Ordered this gorgeous 16 oz that looks more mug shaped at the top. Unfortunately it loses heat immediately and is tepid at best within the hour. I dont know if this is a design flaw with the larger opening, or possibly a manufacturing defect during the vacuum process. I had to return it because it will never get used. Im replacing it with the previous style with the narrow mouth which I see they make in 12, 16, and 20 oz. Hope the next one keeps the coffee hot! 1I like the mug but there are some problems like it ... I like the mug but there are some problems like it doesn't seem to keep hot beverages as hot as I remember other mugs of the same brand. Because the top screws into the mug it does allow you to put it under a Keurig machine but you have to make sure not to fill it too high as that would just make it overflow when you added the top. It feels secure in your hand and doesn't slip. It's leakproof but if you are drinking and trying to get to the last drop and tilt it up too high you'll get splashed the same. The top doesn't come completely apart but its simple enough to clean. Overall I like it, just wish it kept hot beverages hotter. 4Would definitely recommend and buy one who needs a travel mug. I bought two of these two years ago for myself and my boyfriend. Both of us use them daily Monday-Friday and they are going strong. I would without a doubt recommend these to anyone looking for a quality, trouble free travel mug. We ve both dropped ours a time or two and never had them explode or otherwise. They might have a dent or two in the finish and the chrome on the button to open the lid has all but chipped off, but that took over a year to start happening. We ve never had them explode and always brew right into them using an aeropress and boiling water. Lids go on in the open position and then get closed and locked for travel...and they get dumped and which way in our lunch bags.They also get washing in the dishwasher about once a week - lids on the top shelf and mugs down below (I know the insert recommended not doing so). There is usually water in the lid when they get watched this way; I just remove the rubber vacuum stopper and shake the water out, then put it back on...if I forget then water slowly weeps from the circle on top of the lid...but never mingles with the drink. They always stay open once fully opened and stay hot...of course if your drink is half gone and you leave the lid open it won t be hot anymore, but then the mug is open.These also fit perfectly in standard cup folders with no wiggle or vibration noises.Again, we have been very very pleased with these mugs and would abosultely purchase again....except we have no need for new mugs! 5
