    Power tools needed to keep sanity. First, these are very nice book cases ( I bought 2). They are solid wood and I found only one tiny spot flaw on a shelf in the otherwise smooth dark finish....which I was able to put towards the back of the case. I read the many reviews about the difficulty of assembly. I am a petite woman with little-to-no upper body or hand / grip strength. However, I make up for it with tools. I equipped myself with a power drill, a hex bit that fit the hex screws that come with the bookcase, a rubber mallot, and later, a small file ( a coarse sand paper or sanding block would have been ok too.) There is no way I could have used that wimpy hex wrench provided to tighten those big-arse screws. No way I could have used my fist to pound the boards onto the peg holes. I put the first one together in less than 20 minutes by myself. I felt pretty smug and figured the second one would go even faster........THEN I found out about the frustration when the peg holes are off alignment by 1/8 inch. I figured out how to get it to fit without re- drilling. The pegs can be pulled out, and then sanded or filed just a bit at a slope on the edge that won't quite reach the peg hole. That slight angled edge allows the peg to slide into the peg hole when pounded down with a mallot. I would not recommend this bookcase if you do not have the power tools or do not have hand-strength enough to crack walnuts with your bare fingers...I will try to upload pictures if I can. 4Excellent for storing scarves, sweaters & tshirts I just moved into a new house two months ago. This new house has less closet storage than my old house so I needed something in which to store my sweaters, purses, bags, gym clothes, & misc items. I bought a dresser and thought that would do it but I needed still more storage. I found this little gem on Amazon. I was able to buy four collapsible bins and filled each bin with sweaters, winter scarves and some tshirts. I love this shelving unit! It fits nicely in the corner of my room, right next to the door of my small walk-in closet. It is sturdy too. I would definitely recommend this shelving unit! 5Love it! This shelf was perfect for my towels. It matched my bathroom decor. The price was very good for the quality. I love this shelf. 5Disappointed....not worth the money I really like the style of this bookshelf but was really disappointed when I opened the box and found literally every single piece had scuffs, dings, scratches, etc. Luckily it is dark enough you can't see from a distance. But still really disappointing considering the price. I did read other reviews prior to purchasing and read and saw that others experienced the same thing but hoped I didnt encounter the same thing....but here I am.......I did decide to still keep the bookshelf since you can't see the marks unless you stand next to it but I am really disappointed considering the price. I would highly advise people to read the reviews and consider if you care to spend this much money on an item that will arrive with so many scuffs, scratches, and dings. 2Perfect for a narrow space I needed a bit more storage next to my computer desk but space is limited. This narrow bookshelf was the perfect answer. It was easy to put together and fit the space well. I think the quality is very nice. I bought two of the wicker baskets to use with this. They fit great and give me extra storage. The other shelves will hold books, my purse, and special treasures! 5righty-tightey lefty-loosey this is real wood. no directions came in my box, which initially had me feeling threatened, but once i got my bearings and kept in mind the rightey-tighty lefty-loosey rule, i was on my way, unstoppable. take one of the long halves and lay it on the floor with the holes up. then start adding pieces vertically. some have pegs and others have screws. if you look carefully, it is obvious where the pieces go. it took me a while to look carefully. :)once the pieces are all vertically installed on the one side, put the other side on top, pushing the holes over the pegs, and then screw in the other holes as required. that puts all the shelves in except for the topmost piece. at that point i turned the unit upside down and set it on the underneath of the top shelf, dropped the screws in, tightened them, and was done except for adding the plugs to cover the screws. i was very careful not to overtighten any screw.i really like this bookshelf, because as you can see in the second picture, the shelves are tall to accommodate tall books, but on the sides and back, there is a brace midway down the shelf that holds items in place. this is a great prodict! the only tool needed for installation was the included allen wrench. if you know you aren't going to want to take the bookshelf apart later on, it would be good to glue in the pegs. they look like little round buttons. if just pushed into place, they can easily fall out. i was also careful to install the screws as you would lug-nuts on a wheel, opposite, to keep balance. 5Imperfections everywhere on this brand new shelf I ve gotta say, if I had seen this in person, I either would have haggled for a lower price or walked away. I have a similar book shelf that I bought many years ago but it s blonde wood and everything I own is dark wood now. This was supposed to replace that shelf. I paid roughly the same amount of money for the other shelf so I wasn t expecting such a rough, scuffed, less than perfect shelf to arrive. I just opened it now so I m debating on wether to return it or not. I m going to put it together and see how sturdy it is. I was planning on buying a matching shelf from this company but now I just don t see myself doing that. I m definitely disappointed, especially because I saw a high review average.Update: Put it together and it looks as pictured. I was able to do this solo and it took probably 20 minutes. The shelf isn t quite deep enough for a standard storage bin to sit on and be tucked in. The lip protrudes a bit, which is annoying. The shelf is also darker than my other darker wood furnitures which is frustrating, but not a deal breaker. I m not excited about the hassle of trying to return or exchange this product but I don t want to settle for a product that cam with so many blemishes (I did not post all the blemish photos, just a few). 2Great Little Shelf for Narrow Space I needed a shelf to store my cookbooks -- the area where I wanted to put the shelf is only 23" wide, so very narrow. I was a bit nervous to purchase this shelf, based on the number of negative/neutral reviews, but since it really suited my needs I decided to risk it. I'm so glad I did! This is a solid wood shelf, NOT particle board. Yes, there are a fair few screws you'll need to use and pegs you'll need to match up with holes, but it wasn't a nightmare for me to put together. It took a little patience and about thirty minutes of careful assembly. I found it worked well for me to put one side together fully, and then work my way up starting from the bottom to install the second side of the shelving and the pegged backings and shelves, etc, and just work my way upward. The unit is easy to move around once it's assembled; it's solid wood, but not super heavy to manuever. I did have to place a stabilizer under the front legs, but I honestly chalk that up to my uneven flooring rather than the product having a deficiency (our house is 120+ years old; the floors have moved and are slightly sloped by now). The espresso color is a rich dark brown and compliments the other dark wood furniture in the room (please see picture that I uploaded, showing shelf next to my antique piano). My unit arrived without any damage or scratches and was packaged nicely. The shelf is a product of Thailand and is distributed via British Columbia, Canada. The shelves are generously deep, allowing for tall and oversized books to be inserted and stored; many of my cookbooks are oversized and this shelf works perfectly for storing them. I have decided to buy a second unit for the same area of my home, seeing as this first one is working so well for me. I give this product five stars because I really do love how it works for me. I recommend giving this product a try if the dimensions suit your needs. 5Fairly easy to put together. Nicely made. I put this piece together by myself and it took me a little over an hour. I suggest making the wholes bigger on the shelves that require screws. I did this by screwing the screw in about halfway then unscrewing them. This was very helpful when I put this together. I had some difficulty putting the panel on after screwing in the shelves. It took some patience, but ultimately, it wasn t that bad. I gave this product 4 stars only because Iwould have liked it to be taller. 4Glue and Screw assembly required This shelf is durable and well put together. However, assembly IS required. You will be required to glue hefty pegs in place and to screw in some allen-hex screws.This is made of real wood, not particle board, so you'll have to wiggle a little here and there to get it all lined up. Once it's in place, the screws hold it together snugly while the pegs dry.The peg holes are a little oversized because it's consumer assembly, and you don't want someone breaking it with a hammer. As such, I recommend overuse of wood/white glue to fill the holes.Once it's assembled, the "smart" thing to do is to wait a day or two for the glue to dry, and make sure there are no drips/runs.However, I loaded mine up with books and equipment immediately and have been very happy with it over the last 6 months. I've moved it around, leaned on it, piled heavy books on top, etc.Because it's open on the sides, the weight is much less than something more solid. The slats hold in most anything I'd want to put on the shelves. There's even a little room under it which I found was good for packing into a corner with a torchiere light, or for hiding misc stuff. YMMV as you might find it simply collects dust bunnies.Either way, my unit does not wobble other than being tall and thin. It supports any book load I put on it, free-standing.In summary, this is REAL WOOD, free standing, about 5' tall, and can be assembled by one person with a sore back in about 20 minutes with glue and an allen wrench. It can be carried by one person, but is stable on the floor. 5
