Customer Reviews

Great for use with quinoa ... I purchased this specifically to use with quinoa after reading other reviews here. I just discovered quinoa, and I'm having a ball trying different recipes and preparations, so this item has gotten quite a workout over the past few weeks. So far, my favorite is a quinoa salad made with dried apricots, golden raisins, slivered almonds, and a dressing made with lime zest, lime juice, a little olive oil, a finely diced jalapeno pepper, and some cumin and/or cilantro. Sounds strange, I know, but the flavors work. It's just the right size for the quantity I usually prepare -- enough for 2-3 servings. I hand wash it after each use -- I don't like putting wood handled items in the dishwasher. It's relatively easy to clean, so no major issues there. So far, so good -- no quality issues that I can see. Very happy with this purchase. 4Food gets stuck! Food gets stuck in between the double mesh!!! This happened the first time I used it,. Horrible. 1A very good old-fashioned strainer - just what I have been looking for! This is an excellent strainer. Good volume, not overy deep but also not too shallow. I have been looking for a replacement strainer for the longest time - my grandmother's finally gave up the ghost (it is 30 years since she passed & the strainer was old then). I don't know if it is from the same maker, but everything about this satrainer is identical to her's. I'd estimate that the original lasted about 60 years. If I get 1/3 of that service from this strainer, I will have had more than good service from it. lol Construction is sturdy, it can be filled completely and handle resting on a bowl or pot without strain. I have already used it lined with a light weight cloth to strain a small batch of stock - held the bones & aromatics with no trouble at all. This strainer has a double mesh which also makes it very good for straining pulp for jelly making. In the product description it reads, "Good quality product." That is not an empty boast. Most of those who pan this item seem to be expecting a chinois. This is not a chinois, it is a strainer. [NB: If you are concerned about rust, do not wash in a dishwasher & do not let it soak in a pan of dishwater - the failure is not the product's but the user's. Treat your tools well & they will outlast you - see grandma's strainer for an exemplar. ;) ] 5Not for self defense. Great for Quinoa. Great little strainer. I set out to build a kitchen full of implements that could be used for self defense as needed (Cast iron frying pans, all clad measuring cups, industrial strength everything), but when it came to a fine enough strainer for quinoa and other grains, they just don't make 'em with that amount of heft and durability. So this WAS a compromise, but one that I'd make again. Seems like it will hold up well in all activities EXCEPT fending off vicious ninjas.Strains our quinoa just fine. Wouldn't try it for couscous though. Very fine mesh. As others have noted, there's big mesh and little mesh 'layers', and it does seem like it'll be hard to get completely dry every time. That being said, after several uses, I'm not seeing any rust marks appearing, so I'm happy! Look no further for a quality little strainer to get the job done. 4DANGER: Knock the wood out of handle or suffer I have had this strainer for almost 2 years and love it. No rust, washes quinoa and whatever else great. Last night, I heard a click and felt a firey pain and agonizing pressure in the middle joint of my middle finger. The wood piece had snapped slightly out of alignment and snapped back into alignment WITH PART OF MY FINGER IN BETWEEN the metal and wood. I couldn t let go with my other hand because then the full weight of the thing would be dangling from my finger, so I screamed for my partner who pushed the wood enough to get it out. There was blood and lots of tears and I could actually see and then pull the caught piece of my skin out of the strainer after, that s how much skin it was. It hurt very badly even though it was a ultimately a surface wound. Think the feeling of a papercut but constant with your worst enemy from grade school pinching you as hard as they can with their nails. Partner knocked the wood out of the handle afterward, and we think that it will work just fine now.... 4This one has been good and sturdy for the past few months and I'm ... I bought one of these ages ago from a local store and the handle actually broke off. This one has been good and sturdy for the past few months and I'm not sure what I did without one of these. There's a small hook at the edge of the handle that you can easily hang at arms reach. Just today I used it to rinse off a can of beans and my boyfriend used it to rinse cherries. A lot of the time we let it sit at the edge of a bowl to let the water drain before we package away berries or grape tomatoes. Great purchase! 5Great strainer Great strainer! Good size, double mesh is relatively easy to clean, rests on bowls easily. The only thing I don't like is how flexible the handle is where it's connected to the strainer. It bends with not much weight in the strainer, which I do not care for. 4Good Piece of kitchen Equipment I gave this a low on the durability. Not for quality, but for the fact that it's a metal mesh that is not meant to be super strong.Came a little bent, but I just bent it back to a shape I was happy with. Handle is solid, it gets the job done.Due to the nature of the metal it IS a little difficult to clean, so just set it aside when you have time to hose it down for a minute or two. 5Changed product. Bought one of these several years ago , and finally decided to replace it. Since the original one lasted so long why wouldn't I buy it again? The new one is so flimsy now the wires forming the bowl and handle flex so much I don't want to put much weight in it. New, Improved, Flimsy, you get the picture. 3A very useful size-- excellent quality. A very useful size-- excellent quality. I have a smaller stainless steel hand held strainer I've had for probably 40+ yrs..This one is larger capacity and has a finer mesh. It's a good in-between size between a small strainer and a large, footed one.The handle is wood inside a stainless steel frame and comfortable to hold. There are two small "hooks" on the outer rim so youcan attach it to, or balance it on top of a pot or bowl to allow it to sit and drain liquids. I've found it very useful in everythingfrom rinsing fruits, vegetables and legumes to straining the water from cooked pasta. 5
