Customer Reviews

Nice narrow profile I was very excited reading all the good things about this product. I found it very wobbly and I had to sure it upwith a wide strip of black contact paper around the entire outside of the shelf. That made it much better. It has agreat narrow footprint fits in nicely in a small space. 3Sturdier Than the Older Model This bookcase is a lot sturdier and holds up better than the older model because it has adhesive as well as grooves that you slide the pieces into. It looks good and has plenty of space for books. It's best not to put heavy books in it though just to be on the safe side. 5 stars from me! 5Cardboard and tape Basically this unit is made of recycled paper covered in a cheap and easily scratched laminate. It is literally held together with tape. This makes it pretty easy to assemble and requires no tools - insert the cardboard tube pegs in the holes, peal the back off the tape, line up the pieces and smack em together. It's not particularly durable and came with a couple dents in the edges out of the box.I bought this to turn on its side and use as a printer stand under my desk. Upon reading the instructions I learned that the product is only designed to support weight in the vertical position. This proved to be true as the tape at the joints started to separate under the weight of the printer. After a trip to the hardware store for about ten dollars worth of T braces and corner supports, I now have a servicable printer stand with a bit of storage for paper. However, for fifty bucks, I think I could have done better and gotten a simpler sturdier solution for less.If you need something really light-weight, easy to put together that is basically disposable and aren't concerned with value or durability, perhaps this is just what you are looking for. I think it's way too much money for what you get. 2Should have read the description better So, I guess I didn't really understand what "paperboard" is, but given that this is supposedly furniture, I expected something much more durable - not made of lightweight cardboard covered in patterned paper made to look like wood (really? You can't even cut the edge trim at the corners to make it look just a little more real? Yikes). Since I was going to use this product as storage in a bathroom, I was pretty sure it would have disintegrated pretty quickly with any amount of moisture. Also I suspected that curling irons, drippy toothbrushes, etc. would mar or damage the top. The bottom line is don't buy this if you want something that's not extremely lightweight but apparently really flimsy. I'm replacing this with a particle board/veneer piece that I think will hold up much better. 2Very Pricey Considering Materials & Difficulty to Get Square/Straight I ordered both the 2-shelf cube, and the 2-shelf rectangle units. I got the 2-shelf cube last night, and I have to say that I did not have any trouble with assembly. I am a paper crafter, so lining up edges with sticky adhesive where you get one shot at it is old hat for me. And the dowels lined the walls up great. Even though I was careful and deliberate, it still took less than 5 minutes, which was just AWESOME to me. One recommendation I did not see in other reviews: DO A DRY RUN ASSEMBLY FIRST, BEFORE EXPOSING ANY TAPE. This way, you will be able to see if there is anything in the little pre-drilled dowel holes that might keep the pieces from sitting flush. You will also be able to better see how to line up the back panel straight. Also, you really should put these together on a flat, hard surface, like a wood floor. As I did my dry run with the unit, I noticed that the back panel piece was too long. When flush with the bottom, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch would stick up from the top. No problem for me, I simply assembled flush with the bottom, then ran an exacto knife carefully along the top edge a couple times, using a self-healing cutting mat underneath. It's all pretty now :-) As I assembled each piece onto the next, I tried not to lower the piece into place until it was lined up. Then I slid it slowly onto the tape, and pressed and held it there--you need to press straight down into the tape, be very careful and don't wobble the piece. Once I had all the walls put together firmly, I actually very gently set the unit on its front, so I could better line up the back panel. Also, putting the back panel on like that enabled me to push the panel straight down onto the tape and hold it there firmly for a few seconds, to let it get a better grip. All in all the assembly was fast and easy. I bought these shelves because they perfectly fit the sizes of the places I will be using them. I am putting one on each side of my monitor on the top of my desk, then will find a board to go across the top, to have more space to organize my stuff. (I wish this company offered just straight flat boards--I could use one about 60" long above my units!) My shelf seems pretty sturdy so far, but it is sitting on top of my desk, at the back, against a wall...so it is not going to be leaned on or anything potentially troublesome like that. I can't see using these reliably in any situation other than having them supported like that. I would bet that if you were to hammer little brads through the back panel, into the sides and bottom, that might help. But this product should be improved by the manufacturer, not the end-user, especially for this price. Now, for the bad news: even with the dowels and careful, thoughtful, assembly, my shelf unit does not appear straight/square. My husband measured and found what appears to be slight warping on the top and bottom pieces, which just adds up by the time you get it assembled. I also think that not having any alignment guides for the back panel creates a situation where you can accidentally adhere the panel at a slant, which doesn't help. I've cut some cardboard strips from the packaging to set under one side, and that will do the trick for me. I paid like $80 for these two 2-shelf units, because they were the perfect size for my needs, but that is just way too much for furniture that is so hit and miss with assembling square. (Even if the company can do better with that problem, it's still not worth more than $20 for this 2-shelf cube.) And like others have mentioned, the woodgrain covering paper peels back easily. I saw it happening in a place that's now covered after assembly, and I had not touched it in that area, so it was coming off by itself. If that piece had folded over itself as I was assembling, it would have prevented the pieces from sitting flush. I do have to say that everything was packaged beautifully...maybe that's where all the cost is! Bottom line, these work for the modular space I wanted to create. If you find something else that can work for your space, I'd go for that. 3Not what I expected I was going to make something about the same size as this out of birch veneer plywood, but I wasn't too excited about having to paint or varnish it. So I found this and decided to give one a try. It comes in a small, lightweight box. My overall impression is that the unit is made out of a material that might dent easily, and the whole thing is covered with a glossy white paper. One corner of the paper was starting to peel, and I glued it back down. I had no trouble putting the pieces together, but you have to be very alert and careful since you're adhering everything with double-stick tape. I would suggest having a cup of coffee before you start, because the four-step instructions are not as complete as they should be. The middle shelf has holes drilled all the way through it, but this information is in small type on another part of the page. You also have to make sure the pieces are turned so that the adhesive strips are facing the back for the backer board. You're instructed to let the unit "rest" for 24 hours before you use it (kind of a letdown), and you're only supposed to pick it up by the bottom. Ultimately, I get the whole eco construction thing. The designers seem to accept the fact that disposable furniture is here to stay, and this unit does seem like it would break down more easily in the environment. And I know that generally you pay more to help the environment, but I think the price for these shelves is too high for something that doesn't seem very durable. One thing's for sure, they've come up with a product that really can't be dismantled should you decide to put it back in the box and return it. 2ABSOLUTELY NO AROMA OF OFF-GASSING CHEMICALS Before I made this purchase I read many reviews knocking the quality of this product. I tried it anyway because I'm familiar with paper-based boards used for furniture construction (used to do it myself in art school), and I wasn't going to compare the finished product to wood. This is a moderate weight material. It's sturdy enough to be used for storage or for display. It's not to be moved around, knocked around, or handled roughly. I probably wouldn't use it in a kid's room for toy storage, for example, and expect it to last a decade. It was fun to assemble, and the alignment was as accurate as a comparable piece made from wood press-board. For me, the most important feature was the absence of noxious off-gas aromas. If I buy a do-it-yourself construciton in wooden pressboard, I have to unpack it and let it air-out outside for 3-4 weeks before I can get near enough to it to put it together (becuase of the formaldehyde aroma--it's just too much for me). After unpacking the Way Basics product, I did not have to wait one minute before I brought it into the house and put it together. After assembly, it went directly into the space where I needed it for storage (one of the most commonly used rooms in the house), and I felt completely confident that it was completely safe to be breathing the air there. 4Good product, but I made it Great. I bought this for my office. I keep bottles of sparkling water in it. I was afraid it would collapse from the weight, so I improved it with corner braces. Copy and paste this link. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004Z0RW?redirect=true&ref_=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_3I bought 2 Storage Cubes and put them together using these corner braces, placing one on every corner. Do not tighten the screws too tight as they will strip easily in this soft material.Very sturdy now. 4Way basic eco 2 shelf I got this one because I already have the three shelf unit and have had no complaints with it. I use them to store textbooks that we no longer use for homeschooling. It is lighweight and easy to move and once you have the books inside it is a great looking shelf. I put it in a corner behind a desk so there's no risk of them getting knocked over. But I really like them because they are made of recycled paper! 53 stars not because it's bad but because it's average These cubes get the job done of holding stuff. They don't exude quality or fit and finish as they aren't made of wood but compressed paper/cardboard held together with hollow cardboard plugs and double sided tape. That aside, while it's obvious they aren't the most beefy, if you are just looking for a catch all or to organize lighter items they are fine. We've used a stair step array of six to hold things like magazines and books on the bottom with daily mail and keys up top. Only time will tell though as to how durable they are. 3
