Customer Reviews

Worms Arrived Early & VibrantOur starter colony of 2,000 red wrigglers arrived a few days early. We obtained a new vermiculture kit from the City of Long Beach. The worms arrived in good shape. As instructed, gave them 1/2 cup of water to re-hydrate. Set up the coconut coir, spread out the worms. While I don t do a worm count; i ll Take Uncle Jim s word for it. Covered them in wood shavings, lettuce & cabbage scraps, tea grounds and egg shells. 5The worms were in great shape and very livelyThe worms were in great shape and very lively. However, I have ordered these worms many times and every single time the box arrives all smashed up. It appears some jerky along the line gets a thrill out of stopping on the box until it is nearly as flat as a pancake. How does one initiate an investigation to find out who is doing this.? 5Arrived alive and ready to eatI didn t count each worm but I can say the bag arrived with what appeared to be thousands of worms. I put them all in my straw bale Vermicomposter to join other worms who have been living in there about a year and a half. Hope they all get along. I ll keep an eye on the new kids and report back if there s any issues. But the worms did arrive in good shape and once in the compost, with a tiny bit of moisture (water) added, they all squirmed about happily. 5Not red wigglersEverything was perfect except the fact that I didn't get red worms. Being a novice; I didn't know the difference between red worms and blue worms. Blue worms are red in color but have a bluish side cast in certain lights. They arrive quickly and in good condition. They were certainly lively; very lively. In fact too lively. I read some complaints few on vermiculture Facebook groups to the said UJWF didn't send them the reds they thought they were getting. I studied the matter and indeed I was NOT sent red worms. I was sent Perionyx Excavatus, a different type of composting worm also known as blue travelers. They look similar but the blues are smaller, thinner and don't get as long as the red worm variety E. Fatida. They also move faster than the reds, ergo the very active behavior of the colony that I was sent.It has taken me three months to figure this out, so it's a little late to return them. But I did have a robust online conversation with the grower just this morning. They admitted that their "red worm mix" is a mix of composting worms, including blues. Mine just happened to be mostly all blues. I expressed my displeasure that this wasn't disclosed on their web-site and it felt like a bait and switch scam.Blue worms are a fine composting worm. They reproduce fast and generate a good quantity of castings. But they are more temperature sensitive than the red worms and can die off in the winter in an outdoor grow like mine. And also, reds are just better composters. So, buyer beware. Get a guarantee from your grower that you are getting Eisenia Fatida and not the imposter blue worm, Perionyx Excavatus. 2DOAIt s winter, so I expected the worms to be a bit slower than usual in adjusting. When they arrived a few days early, I was excited: Surely they would be a bit more chipper since they shaved a few days off their travel time. We were home so we grabbed the worms and brought them in the warm house almost immediately. When I opened the bag and saw probably 25-40% of them unmoving and tangled together, I figured they were just shocked from travel. Nope. 48hours later, and I d say about 25-40% of them are completely dead.I m sure shipping live animals is a tremendous pain, but they need to take some more precautions if the shipping alone is enough to kill that many. 3I am a Happy, Four Time, Repeat CustomerI have purchased worms from these folks 4 times and have been satisfied with eachtransaction. My first 2000 went into the garden beds. The neighbors tell me they are discovering worms everywhere. I ask forthem back. They just smile. The second went into the worm farm. That's self sustaining after three years. The third, this review, was entirely my fault. I ordered these while the temperature between PA and WA was completely below freezing the entire route. Not surprising, they arrived as frozen mush. Uncle Jim's promptly sent me a new batch, again, partially frozen in route. UncleJim's happily reimbursed me and I agreed to order when the temperature was a bit more worm friendly. I ordered the 5000worm version in March and put handfuls, of aggressive wiggling worms into the aquaponics grow beds.As a note, many of the worms are intentionally partially dehydrated for shipping, hidden in the bedding, or tangled up with otherworms and don't really become visible or active until sprayed with fresh water. I've been more than happy with the quantity, quality, and customer service 5Better than buying them in small quantities...Look, you know that none of us REALLY know if its actually 2,000 worms but I can tell you that they came alive and there were a lot in the bag just ready to go. 5Not as advertisedWhen i read some of the previous reviews i tryed to shrug off the bad reviews. Boy was i stupid for doing that! My box came crushed in pretty bad shape. Then to top that the date on the box was today, and when i dumped out my worms they were all pretty much dead. There were supposed to be over a thousand worms amd there was maybe a couple hundred. So much for spending fifty plus dollars on worms gor my worm farm. 1Big bag, few worms. Bigger bag, more worms with reshipment. The images in the product listing are misleading. When the product arrived, the box almost felt empty. The green bag inside had only a handful of peat moss inside, and when I dumped the contents on the compost pile, I saw a few small worms wiggling around. If there were even two hundred worms, I would be surprised. Not impressed.Update: After sending an email through Amazon to the seller, I received a response from Bethany at Uncle Jim's. She notified me she would ship a replacement right away. That was Monday, and I received the replacement today. I could tell by the weight of the package something was different. The bag inside was much fuller, and when I emptied the contents, their was a baseball sized mass of wriggling, healthy red worms, not a few small, thin, black worms crawling out of the dried peat moss like with the first shipment.Things happen, and I will give Jim's Worm Farm a presumption that the first order was just a one off, or someone having a bad day. Big plus for a prompt response. 4Yep... worms. NMTS, but they seem to be working well in my Garden Tower 2So, I guess I should start with the fact that I have no level of knowledge or competency when it comes to understanding anything about worms. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, I bought a Garden Tower 2 (a vertical composting garden), which has a worm composting function. Despite the manufacturer claiming that you could easily source local worms, I figured I'd just buy them the same way I get everything else... AMAZON!The manufacturer indicated that red wiggler worms were one of the appropriate varieties, so I bought 2000 of them. Considering the shipping size and weight seemed to be REALLY close to the 1000 worm bag I'd previously ordered, it's hard to say that I got the proper quantity (though I'd imagine it's guestimated by weight, anyway). As a little bonus, the worms come in a decent bag, and the packaging includes some newspaper, which I needed for the worm bedding ITFP. My first batch of worms had a really high mortality rate, but it's possible that's my fault. With the habitat now properly prepared, I'm curious to see how this batch does. 4
