Customer Reviews

Astonishingly effective, but a glitch or two My wife recently asked me to bring home a pineapple, a request that I promptly forgot. Later, while shopping for other kitchen playthings, I found and immediately ordered this unit. It arrived, I bought a pineapple, and gave it all a try. Yikes, in no time I had a solid cylinder of pineapple, ready to be cut into segments or not, depending on what my wishes were. I chose segments, and quickly got to glitch number one - the segmenter device is not appropriate to the size of the pineapple slices that the slicer generates. Huh? Weird, but in truth, not a killer drawback - just slit down the side of the big cylinder of pineapple and press each split disc into the segmenter. A little messy, but again, not a fatal flaw. The other glitch emerged at around the same time. It seems that the slicing portion is so effective (and it REALLY is) that it doesn't always follow the core of the pineapple, leaving the inner diameter of some pineapple discs with a bit of the hard core, instead of the yummy ripe flesh. Another non-fatal flaw, but a flaw nonethelessSo I rated the whole setup a 4, mostly because I'm still awash in the memories of the yummy pineapple, and have suppressed the mildly annoying parts. You'll probably wind up doing the same - pineapple fresh from the plant is SO compelling that you just can't stay angry at a device that makes it as painless as this one does, even though it does a couple of stupid things in the process. 4Fantastic PINEAPPLE EXPRESS!!! I absolutely love Fresh Sweet Pineapple, as does the rest of my family. I had purchased several whole pineapples and went through the painstaking process of cutting it up.. miserable is what that is.So, then we went to purchase the pre-cut pieces from our grocer and I'd find more and more pieces with the inedible core in the batch so we stopped buying it and gave up... until Del Monte published a coupon on coupons dot com with a deal for pineapples, buy two save $1.25, and our grocer had a sale on pineapples 2 for $2.50, we brought home 2 pineapples for $1.25!! I couldn't pass that up, was a fantastic deal!! but then I had to cut them up and I put that off until I figured out a better way to cut them up..I went to amazon.com later that night and I looked at what my options were and found this little guy! I ordered it and with my 2 day shipping I got it in time to cut them both up..It literally took a minute and a half to cut one of up, I was so excited! We can have fresh pineapple again!!!It is actually very very neat how this works, it does the corkscrew type drive into the fruit slicing a perfect circular chunk out of the center of the pineapple, sliced into about 1/4 inch deep circles.*You might want to do this in a clean sink, there is a lot of juice that will come out of your fruit*1) First you'll slice the cap off the pineapple2) Connect your handle to the top of the Slicer3) Locate the Core and center the core cut out over the top of the core4) Put Slight to moderate pressure and twist clockwise, fast or slow, doesn't matter, it will cut the same.5) Once you've hit the bottom of the fruit you'll know, the sound will change, or you'll break through the bottom with your blade, continue to turn clockwise and pull rather than push and you'll pull out a perfectly circular hollow tube of pineapple. (The core and the Exterior of the pineapple will be left in the fruit in most cases, in a few cases you might end up removing the core as well, don't worry about that yet)6) Take the Handle off the Cutter and place the dicer/wedger over the metal on top of a cutting board, or protected surface, otherwise the teeth on the bottom of the blade will cut into whatever you place it on7) SPEED MATTERS HERE: Quickly and swiftly press down as hard as you're able on the dicer/wedger and it will cut your pieces into chunks - just like you buy in a can of pineapple.Don't forget the remaining juice in the cored out fruit if you like that, if not you, maybe your kids or husband, my son jumped after it and so did my husband.~ If your core didn't come out when you pulled it from the fruit then take a wooden spoon or other item and stick in the NOT JAGGED EDGE of the slicer and gently push out, not to fast as not to jam your hand into the end of even the unsharp end. Be extremely careful, this item is sharp and metal.NUTRITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Pineapple, raw (from pineapplefacts dot info)Pineapple is an excellent source of vitamin C and manganese. It's a very good source of vitamin B1. It's a good source of vitamin B6, copper, magnesium, and dietary fiber. Bromelain is is a proteolytic enzyme (enzymes that digest protein) found in pineapple, and to a greater extent in pineapple stems.Nutritional value per 100 g (3.5 oz)Carbohydrates 12.63 gDietary fiber 1.4 gFat 0.12 gProtein 0.54 gThiamine (Vit. I used it for several pineapples and it worked great. Although the wedge cutter was made of plastic, it cut the pineapples well. I would recommend being gentle with it and not force the wedge cutter or else it may break. Also good to know the unit was not made in China. These are made in Europe I think. Be careful. There are several knockoffs. I hope my cutter lasts for awhile however I won t know until later hence the 4 stars for now. 4Great Product! Never knew such a product existed until I saw it in action with my own eyes. Was so impressed I bought 5 - one for myself & 4 for gifts; one gift has come back to me because the person could not figure out how to use it. Give this product a chance! Takes some practice & muscle but so much better than using a knife! Only Con: there are no written instructions - only very small photos. Took a bit to understand that the 3 tubes are sized differently to make thin, medium, or thick slices; seems a waste as there does not appear to be much difference between the 3. How it works: Slice the top of the pineapple off then pop the handle on to one of the tubes and twist the tube over the core from top to bottom - this is where you need some muscle. The shell will remain intact and you will have a continual ring of fruit to pull from the shell. If you want chunks then take the handle off the tube then slide the green "chunk cutter" over the tube and push to the bottom. This is like an apple cutter but it has no sharp edges. The core may remain inside the tube; if so, just push it out with a knife or wooden spoon handle. Suggestion: also slice the bottom off of the pineapple and put it in a large bowl before coring; this will allow you to save the juice. Have done it without slicing off the bottom but afraid of bacteria from the outer shell mixing with the juice. Note: the first and only demonstration I saw was perfect! Once the fruit was removed the pineapple shell and core remained intact - the core looked like a candle sitting inside the shell - you could have even used the shell for a nice pineapple cocktail cup! Again....give this product a chance, you will learn to love it! 4Great concept This is easier to use than it looks! The accompanying instructions make it simple. I find that it works well and is easy to use, and I have diminished strength in my arms and hands. So hurray for that! Where I run I to problems is that every pineapple is not perfectly shaped. First, you cut off the top and the bottom of the fruit, and stand it upright, preferably in a bowl that will collect the juice and eventually hold the pineapple pieces. Then you need to center the circular cutter over the core at end of the pineapple, insert the handle, and turn the handle while pushing down through the center of the pineapple. If the pineapple isn't sitting perfectly upright, the corer won't go down straight, and may get stuck. I have learned to live with the variability, because even when it gets stuck, it's not that big a deal. You can pull the remainder out of the slicer and quickly cut it with a knife. All in all, I love mine. It ain't perfect, but it is such an improvement over tackling a whole pineapple with nothing but a knife! 4Never pass by the pineapple display again In fact, Dole should give these away for free in order to sell more pineapples. Looks good, works well, washes up easily and you have a container of either pineapple rings or wedge chunks in a jiffy. Bam. Done.Like they say, you can use the shell as a container for fruit salad, or perhaps some flaming drink made with 180 proof rum. I have had a couple of those in my day, will have another soon hopefully. The only difficulty is determining how deep to go before the hole saw part comes through the bottom of the pineapple. I line it up alongside the fruit and mentally make a mark on the shaft and only go down that far.The plastic wedgie maker part seems, well, plastic. But it works fine. Actually, the whole device is very well made and is a quality item.Only caution. Do the work in a sink or wide bowl. Counters slope down to the floor side. One oz of pineapple juice that makes it to the floor will make it astonishingly sticky. Make your kids do this outside.Really, 4.5 stars because of the plastic ring, but it works so 5 is appropriate. 5Sceptic to Believer My husband has mentioned getting something like this for years now but I always thought it was silly to spend money on something when it's so easy to do with just a knife and some patience. I am not one for gadgets. They tend to just take up space and half of them you hardly ever use, but then my husband bought this and COMPLETELY changed my mind. Yeah, I can easily cut up a pineapple in about ten minutes with a knife but then there's the sticky clean up and tons of little scraps to get rid of. With this, I can easily have an entire pineapple cut up and ready to eat in less than 30 seconds. Clean up is a breeze as well since the entirety of the outside of the pineapple is intact and can be tossed as one piece. Like with any pineapple cutting method, the juice does go everywhere but I just put it on a large plate with a high lip (or a casserole dish, etc) which contains all the juice and makes for extremely easy cleaning.A few reviewers have complained about getting the core out of the silver cylinder but I've never had an issue. I just stick a finger inside and nudge the core a little so it's exposed at the bottom and then yank the entire thing out. Barring that, you could always just use a butter knife. It's not like your kitchen isn't just full of things you can stick in there to dislodge it, why would you complain about them not providing you with something specifically made for it? It would just be yet another piece of gadgetry with only one use to sit in a drawer taking up space. This way is much better. 5Broke it on fifth pipeapple It worked great when I first got it but broke on the fifth pineapple. There is a metal blade on the side that is responsible for cutting the outside edge of the pineapple rings. I started turning the cutter and the blade bent back. It looks like there was a small weld holding it in place and it broke loose. I am very disappointed especially since this is the more expensive one this company offers. In the end, five pineapples in seven weeks and broken.****UPDATE 6-19-2012***** I emailed the company from their website and explained what happened. They are sending me a replacement. At least the company stands behind their products. 1Worked perfectly and easy to figure out even without instructions Worked perfectly and easy to figure out even without instructions. I did appreciate someone's advice to cut the top and bottom off the pineapple first, makes it easier not having to cut thru the rind and no guessing when you've reached the bottom. The only thing I would wish for is a version that cuts thicker slices. The device that cuts the slices into pieces is equally easy, just remove the handle from the corer, slip the slicer over the top and push down. It will generate a lot of juice so have something to catch it.I've hand sliced pineapples for years and it isn't that hard but you do have to be careful and it does take a bit longer. This is so simple I can take a couple of pineapples and turn them into chunks in less than 5 minutes, chunks into some bowls, clean up the mess and I'm all done. Doing it by hand means cutting the pineapple into quarters, manually slicing out the core, cutting again into 8ths, slicing along the rind and then cutting the chunks. That's enough work and generates enough extra waste that I don't tend to even want to do an entire pineapple at once.Fruit lovers will make the cost back after a few pineapples compared to buying pineapple chunks from the grocery store. Cool gadget. 5The handle is more rugged on this version Pineapple stays fresh for two weeks, when stored in Ziplock Round Lock 2 cup containers; with the excess pineapple juice added to the container. We keep them as spirals, rather than cutting into cubes.I owned a different version that came with only a single (medium) size cutter, and the handle had a taper to it which weaker and wound up breaking off. This version looked more rugged from the photos, and two years in hasn't broken. I've seen comments in the past that it wastes or leaves pineapple on the inside. If you use a smaller sized cutter for the first inch or two, than cut that part of the shell off, you can switch to a larger size and get more of the pineapple out. I don t do that often, as I prefer to squeeze the remaining pineapple in the shell to add its juice to the container. This way the pineapple keeps for longer (about 2 weeks). The only disadvantage to squeezing the shell in this manner, you can t than use shell as a beverage cup :) 5
