Nice solid tool!
I touched up the blade with 400 grit wer/dry sandpaper, and it is sharp. Very substantial blade with nicely shaped solid wood handles that are attached very securely. Nice touch to include a blade guard. The only detraction was one spot about 1 1/4 inches where the factory grind on the bade was poorly done. Took a lot of wok to get that resolved and polish out the factory grind scratches. If the factory grind had been better, this would be five stars. I did not consider that to be sufficient reason to give a poor review. Any tool is going to have small issues, and will require the buyer to touch up and sharpen. This is to be expected.
4Ok. You get what you pay for.
I knew that for around $30 that this drawknife was not going to be fancy or high quality. Out of the shipping box this drawknife does not impress. The detachable handles are a nice feature with functional design. The blade was a bit of a disappoint as I had at least expected something mildly sharp. It is so far from sharp that I ran my thumb across the length of it while applying a little pressure leaving no mark. I also hadn't expected the slight curve to the metal across the length, visible in the pics of the blade on a piece of wood that is very close to flat. The "sharpening" procedure used to shape the bevel also left 4 little waves in the bevel surface. This knife is currently undergoing a flattening of the bevel and a serious sharpening. I am using a technique So far it seems to be taking on an edge just fine. The steel does not appear to be too soft. It is going to be a while before the blade is finished as there are other demands on my time. This drawknife seems to be an ok choice if you are a hobbyist with more time than money and you are willing to put some work into it. Not a tool that I would recommend to anyone that wants or needs to use it right out of the box.
3Good angle on the handles puts the blade at a good angle on the wood.
This tool is well made and the angle of the handles puts the blade at a good angle on the wood. I dressed the edge up with a diamond stone. But then again, I sharpen most new implements and knives after I receive them. I like everything razor sharp!
5A Great Tool for Woodworkers
Works well... This may sound like a no-brainer... But for those to whom has not used one of these... You should secure the wood before shaving it... You could even shave a tree that you have not cut down yet... This is my attempt of giving a review longer than "Works well"
5Good value for the price
I m a first time draw knife user. At first I used the knife with a bench vice to not impressive results on oak and juniper. Then I made a $25 shaving horse and the difference it makes in the ability of the knife to cut is tremendous. This knife will get occasional use and for that purpose it s fine. The steel is quite soft compared to more expensive drawknives, but you figure that some compromise had to be made for the price. My bottom line is that if you are going to use a drawknife day in and day out then invest in a higher quality one. If you will use it occasionally then this should be more than fine. Just keep it sharp and make sure that you have a rock solid hold down for the wood and it works great.
4Pick this up, Very good for the price
Great buy it makes me mad that people here claim it isn't a good product because it look like it came straight out of the mill with no edge to it because all draw knifes come dull you have to sharpen them yourself for one,And for two mine came well packaged and when sharpened it held its edge for a 3-4 projects before filling out which isn't bad because each project takes a lot of use of this knife as I make wood crafted bows.I would definitely recommendAs it is good quality for a Japanese knife,Though an authentic American draw knifes have the very best quality,This isn't bad
5Sharp out of the box, holds its edge, ergonomic handle/blade relationship allows comfortable use.
This draw knife was sharp right out of the box. It feels solid (no bending, handle twisting, etc.) and of good quality materials. I m using it to debark and shape several different types of wood ranging from soft cedar to very hard osage orange. It works well drawing at any speed and with the bevel blade, depth of cut is easy to control. It handles shaving off knots, etc. which take a lot more force than simply shaving bark. It gets the job done. I have no doubts this tool will last and perform well.
5Sturdy, comfortable, and works well
This tool is great. Just be aware it doesn t come fully sharpened and will need some work getting it razor sharp, however that is normal for most cutting tools factory edge. I did use it to shave bark off logs right out of the box, and it worked fine, but a sharper edge will make it easier to use. It s a very durable and well made tool, and after using it quite a bit, I expect it will last a long time.
5Good value, good construction.
Sound, sturdy construction make this tool a very good value. Yes, the blade does not come to you sharp "out of the box" and you will have to spend some time sharpening the blade before the initial use, but for the money I think this tool is a great value. I use this tool to strip bark off large pine timbers I'm clearing. This is a comfortable tool that works well for this job.
4Some work required.
One of the handles was cracked because it was overtighten and the blade was not really sharp. However I polished the handles and lowered the cutting edge angle over all and now it works well. What is good about this tool are the offset handles and the angle to the wood when cutting-cuts very well and allows good and comfortable control over the depth of each cut.I bought another draw knife here on Amazon and it has a better finish but paralel handles and is horrible compared to this one.
