Customer Reviews

Starrett QualityI own a Starrett combination square and calipers. They are great for precision woodworking. I decided to add the Starrett framing square to my toolset. Nice product.5Not sure what the complaints are aboutFor $15 this square is everything you ca expect. It is perfectly square wit my 8" Woodpeckers square so i definitely trust it.5Meh.Ill give it 4 stars because it does its job but for something that starrett put its name on. What a disappointment .35 % perfect. The first square I received was REDICULOUSLY out of square. Amazon sent me another one that was 99.5 % perfect.2Great for D&D mapsGot this to cut foam board for D&D. Also great for helping draw our maps on poster size grid paper for game maps5Everything worked as promised. They were easy to install and are very bright for being battery operated. Almost as bright as electrically wired ones. The convenance of using the remote to to turn everything on and offf is a real plus. They replaced battery operated lights that were only half as bright. These lights, light up the whole counter. 5Inside Edges Square, Outside Edges are not..The inside edges are perfectly square, but the outside edges are not. For rough work it is fine, but if you need accuracy the inside edge is the only one I can rely on. I'm not sure if it varies from square to square. Too bad, typically Starrett products are great. I am keeping it because I will mostly use the inside edge anyway and the price is good.3Great quality Very pleased...and it arrived earlier than expected. 5Not square. This square is off by about 1/32 of an inch over the short side. Also, it comes with a thick plasticy coating, presumably for rust protection, that is cheap, ugly and very difficult to remove. I realize that this square is intended for construction work, but it should be as easy to make a square square as it is to make it not square. Why even bother making it not square. I also realize the coating is intended to make it easier to maintain, but it is lumpy on the edges, and when I removed the coating on the edges to make them smooth, the coating on the flat sides chipped away in some places. I plan to keep it in spite of the poor quality, because I doubt it would be worth the trouble to get an exchange or look for a better product from another company, but I am disappointed. Even for this price, I expected a lot more from Starrett. Clearly they are not the company they once were and a product like this reflects badly on them.1Starrett Framing Square FS-24ASIN: B002BWKO3SThis square doesn't show the quality I expect from Starrett tools. The square wasn't square when it arrived. It's relatively easy to bring this type of square back to perfection, but you shouldn't have to do it with a Starrett tool. If you aren't familiar with the procedure, it is done by peening (striking with a ball peen, or similar, hammer). If the square is acute (less than 90 degrees), strike at the inside part of the corner. If obtuse, strike at the outside part. This causes the metal there to expand in the desired direction, bringing the square back to 90 degrees. It's a process of trial and error. Also, to check a square, lay it against a perfectly straight edge and draw a line on the surface. Flip it over so it is going the opposite direction along the same straightedge and draw another line alongside the first. If the two lines are parallel, the square is square.Back to the square itself. The steel is soft and easily bent, which does make it easier to bring back to square, but also means it can be knocked out of square by dropping it. It's also easy to bend one of the legs so the square doesn't lie flat. Easily corrected, but the steel should be more rigid. As advertised, the gradations are 1/8" only. If you intend to use this square as a measuring tool, you should look for one that has 1/16" or even 1/32" gradations. Some squares also provide gradations in 1/12", which could come in handy for measuring to a scale of 1"=1'.The entire square is covered with a thick, plastic-like coating. I assume this is to prevent rust, but it also gives the square an odd feel. If the coating is to prevent rust, obviously the square will rust after the coating deteriorates or wears away. I can't comment on the coating's durability since I haven't had the square long enough. There are no tables or additional information on the square. Many, if not most, framing squares have tables stamped or etched onto the side that give information on rafter lengths, etc. that a framing carpenter will find useful. This square doesn't provide that. The bottom line is that there are better squares available for the same cost. Don't buy this one.If I had it to do over I would get this one:Empire Level e1190 16-Inch by 24-Inch Professional Framing Square, Blue or Black Anodized AluminumNote that the only non-five-star review for the Empire square is from someone who is upset that he got the wrong color.2Great SquareThis is a great product. I may only use it once in my life, but at least I will have a square. It is heavy and feels like a professional grade tool. I may buy a hammer next and become a contractor. It makes me feel awesome just owning this product.5Very out of SquareNice looking and sturdy and heavily coated with either a lacquer finish or other clear coat. I knew the embossed measurement scale would be difficult to read under certain lighting conditions, so that was not a problem. However, the corner of the square was prominent and influenced the squareness of the tool. The coating was rough enough that a good fine straight line could not be drawn with it. In total, I've used Starrett tools for more years then I can remember and still own micrometers (inside and outside) and adjustable squares with rules over 24". I love Starrett, but I realize it's the low end of their tools and I suspected some out of square issues but not that bad. I wish I had an outside caliper to measure the hypotenuse accurately as I have no other reference to use. The 24" side thickness varied from 2.000 to 2.020 and the 16" side was from 1.504" to 1.514", these measurementrs were taken with a MITUTOYO 500-196-30. I will continue to buy Starrett tools in the future. I will just stick to the higher quality devices. For reference I used my Woodpecker 18X26 and WoodRaphfic square to check it with. My Wood pecker is out by .002 in 26" which is great for what I do. I was hoping for something compatible without the price tag of Woodpecker. Shipping was great and even though there was no packing around the square it came undamaged. Final note, I did or tomorrow morning will put it back in the mail. I think it's a valiant part on Starrett's side to try to produce a low priced tool which everyone is looking for but a little more accurate.1Great Bought this for sewing and was pleased. 5Two Stars With the name Starrett I felt it would be reasonably square. It definitely isn't. 2Good quality Great tool. I have 2 other framing squares but both are very old and both have been dropped so often that neither was square. Good to trust a tool that gives me a square reading. 5
