Customer Reviews

I would not recommend this productI purchased three of these for aging whiskey and bourbon. The first problem I encountered was the butt-end of the barrel sprunging a leak. Turns out the barrel was defective. Sofia s Findings was very helpful and replaced the barrel. But I lost 5 liters of expensive bourbon which would have paid for five barrels; making the replacement a small consolation. The second problem I had was a cracked spigot. This time the leak was slow. By the time I realized it, I had lost half the contents of my barrel. Again Sofia s Findings was helpful in replacing the spigot. And the straw that broke the camels back, another broken spigot and the entire contents of the barrel lost.I ve lost a lot of money in spilled booze. I would not recommend this product. I have retired my aging operation to mason jars with charred oak chips.1A handsome and effective oak aging barrel for liquor - and top-notch customer serviceI bought the 2-liter American Oak Barrel so my wife and I could enjoy aging some tequila together. My better half is from the Hill Country of Texas and has taught me that there is far more to tequila than the swill I drank (and regretted) in college. I never thought that tequila was the type of liquor that one would appreciate for its subtleties . . . and I am thankful that I've learned how wrong I was.Buying this small barrel has been one of the best spur-of-the-moment decisions I've made. We've aged a couple of batches in this barrel and each time we've been impressed with the result. The process can't be simpler - just fill the barrel with water for a few days to allow the wood to expand to water-tight, rinse it a few times to make sure it's clean on the inside, and fill it with tequila. Depending on how long you age it, you get a more pronounced oak taste to the tequila. We are starting with generic bulk low-end tequila and it's coming out tasting terrific - perfect for sipping after squeezing in a single lime wedge. A two-liter barrel is surprisingly small, but the smaller barrels actually yield a faster aging process due to the higher ratio of surface area to liquid than a larger barrel. The barrel is also a handsome little thing. We did not for any labeling or stamping, but we're happy to have it out in our kitchen, and it's a fun conversation starter. Also, I have to sing the praises of Sofia's Findings, the vendors. During the soaking process, the little wooden spigot for the barrel split and started leaking. I contacted Sofia's Findings through the Amazon website and explained the problem in an email, and within the day I had heard back from Sofia's Findings and they shipped me a new spigot no questions asked (along with quick instructions on how to replace the spigot). This is the kind of customer service that warrants repeat business - high marks indeed.5A good deal for a fair priceI am somewhat used to age spirits in barrels. So, my previous experience gives me a reasonable basis for the following comments.Fisrt of all, almost every handmade barrel leaks at the beginning. So, if you read a complaint about that, this is not a real problem, but more likely a lack of experience. What really matters is: if after a few days of the preparation for use the barrel is not leaking anymore, than it is fine. The one I received, indeed, didn't leak even in the beginning. So, a positive point!Second, an important issue about small aging barrels is that they use to be also a decorative item. The one I received is fine, well finished and looks great. The only comment is that the black ink of the hoops melted a little during the preparation with water, thus causing a spot on the bottom. As it is on the bottom, this will not apper in the daily use. Anyway, I'd recommend the steel hoops, just in case. The third potential headache is the spigot. Some of them leak. The one I received doesn't. Another positive point!Bottom line: a good deal, despite it is not the cheapest you can buy at Amazon. For sure, it worths the price.5Great little barrelGreat little barrel! I got the 2 liter barrel. Arrived in perfect condition, looks very nice and it's size makes it pretty darn cute. I wondered about sealing at first because it was almost a steady stream at first but was surprised at how quickly that slowed and by the next day it had stopped. Some have stated that the spout leaks, I noticed as long as was turned 90 degrees it's perfectly fine but slightly off from that and it will start leaking. Appears to have a good char on the inside. We'll see how well it makes whiskey in a few months. Not the fault of the product but I was amazed on how fast alcohol evaporates through wood with the ratio of volume to surface area of a small barrel. So to help that I used paraffin wax (thanks to others on the internet for the help on that) and rubbed it all over. You can't really get it everywhere so it still can breathe. You can then take a heat gun or hair dryer and melt the wax and it still looks great.5Not as large in volume as previous ones!I now have 3 of these 20L barrels, purchased over the past 3 years from Sofia s Findings. The first two that I ordered have been excellent. A True 20 L barrel and have been used for souring beer in (Kreik, Gose, etc) for these several years. The 3rd barrel that I just purchased however looked noticeably smaller in diameter. The heads of the barrel are only 3/4 smaller in diameter than my first two barrels however the center is almost 2 smaller! I took the time to do a volume measurement and sure enough... 16.5 L not 20 L.See lower barrel in photoThis is very frustrating because I took several weeks soaking and preparing the barrel for its first batch of beer and now it s too altered to return. The listing needs to be corrected for its true volume. Maybe I just got a mis-made barrel or the wrong one was shipped but for the money I spent on it, and being the 3rd time purchasing from this vendor, who has been reliable, I m frustrated!2Delicious Barrel and Excellent Customer ServiceI followed the instructions exactly and was rewarded with an amazing 5L Oak Barrel. I had no problems until I left my barrel out at a party I had and ended up losing the cork at the top and the makeshift cork I tried using resulted in some leaks. After contacting Sofia's Findings' customer service, they were gracious enough to send me some replacements for my spigot and cork. I can't ask for much more than that!More about the barrel - the oaky flavor it gives my whisky is fantastic. It seems to age about 10 times faster than a normal barrel would, so 12 weeks of aging is the equivalent of about a year. Not bad, and more than the aging, the flavor it gives is impeccable. I've been recommending this to others and if you're on the fence about whether or not to buy it - I definitely suggest giving it a shot!5This barrel's perfect!I'm a home wine maker but beyond novice now and have been looking for a smaller oak barrel to age my wine in - I found it!I make my wine approx. 24 liters at a time (6 gallons) and this barrel holds about half of my finishing glass carboy (therefore two barrels are perfect as you lose the bottom to sediments). It took 3 days to fully cure the staves to not leak and when I transferred my wine, the spout connection dripped just a bit (maybe 5-6 tablespoons) and now seems to be tight. Looking forward to how this aging changes the structure of the wine and will likely report back on that though it's not relative to the performance of the barrel. This might now allow me to increase my production and with a better product!5Great product and customer serviceI've bought two of these so far, both 1 liter. You have to quickly send the seller a note if you want unvarnished, because they ship within a couple of hours! The instructions that come with the barrels are clear, and easy to follow. You'll need to put water in your new barrel for a couple of days before you do it with liquor, but after that, it's very quick. A week is plenty to age liquor. In one, I've been aging my homemade vinegar. Just a few days, and it's yummier than before. In the other, we've so far done rum, and then brandy. The rum got delicious in about a week...but then we left it in for another five days, and it was too much for me. Next, we did brandy, and I took it out after a week. It is so nice, just richer than before. This is a way to make a cheap bottle of spirit taste a few notches better. The barrels look so nice in our kitchen, too.5Barrel holds less than advertisedThis seems like it will work for me to age my whiskey longer. I won't know if it will work, for sure, for a couple of years.I took off 1 start because the barrel holds quite a bit less than it should. I bought the 10 liter barrel and it actually holds 8.75 liters.I took off another star because the wooden bung (stopper), doesn't work very well. The cork lining around it became damaged. I replaced it with a rubber stopper, which works much better.3Poor quality. Spigot leaksPoor quality. The spigot is junk and does not seal. Looks like it was just hacked together and gooped up with glue in hopes of sealing (see picture). Also the hoops rusted and left big ugly stains on the barrel when I soaked it. I would not recommend or purchase again.1
