Customer Reviews

HIGH QUALITY TAPE We wanted to paint a checkerboard pattern on a wood floor and needed masking tape that would really seal tightly to the porous wood in order to accomplish this. This stuff is not the easiest to work with (it requires cutting with scissors) but once we got the hang of it it worked very well. It took time, and this tape is probably not suitable for ordinary paint masking projects around the house, but if you really need a great seal for a particular project and you're willing to spendsome extra time achieving the desired effect, this stuff rocks. 5A must have for any type of painting I do quite a bit of painting, my family owns rental properties and i do enjoy my projects so i gotta say this tape works great. Normally i use the generic blue painters tape at home depo which works okay but for this project i needed better than "okay". I was repainting the quarter panel of my car and needed something that cut really clean lines so i decided to give this brand a try. The tape sat nice and flat, didnt lift by itself, no paint bleed through, pulled off cleanly without ripping afterwards. This painters tape did exactly what i needed it to do. 5taping is the worst part Painting itself isn't so bad but man does taping suck. Especially if you have as many doors and windows and as much trim as we do in our house. As we are now homeowners, we have become black belts in taping. This tape works really well- you can even tape and come back a few days later to paint and the tape will hold which seems to be our standard operating procedure since after taping we usually congratulate ourselves with margaritas and then our focus goes away. 5Handy refill, two rolls per package Good product in a refill roll. This product's usefulness knows no bounds - limited only by your ingenuity. This two roll refill package lets you reuse the original handy applicator. We have one in our "catch all" drawer in the kitchen. It is often used and takes up little space...we use it on everything from leftover labeling to just "sticking things in place". The tape sticks securely, but is very removable. The downside of the current version is that it is no longer plain blue, but is now thoroughly emblazoned with the 3M logo, etc. in gold printing. There is little room left to write in open space. This greatly detracts from its utility and makes it far less desirable for temporary labels. For that reason, I am downgrading my previous rating. Are you listening, 3M? 3Tough & handy! Refills ruin it. It is a well made product able to withstand taping baseboards in my dining room, living room, and 3 bedrooms! Still going strong! I attached a little adhesive furniture pad to the sides so it wouldnt scratch up the walls... but it didnt do much of that either way.Why it's only 3 stars: you have to use the special tape that fits this tool it's not universal to average blue painters tape. And the special tape is almost as much as the initial purchase of the applicator. Not practical for projects beyond the one roll you get with this purchase. 3Worst performing painters tape I've ever used I recently repainted my old home before selling it and buying and painting by current one. So I have done a lot of painting recently. This is the worst painters tape I have ever used. It didn't want to stick to walls. My walls are textured, but other tapes didn't have that problem. It even had a hard time sticking to hardwood floors when I needed to paint trim. So aside from peeling off on its own it didn't even do that great a job with paint lines. Lots of places the paint made it through and I'll need to re-paint sections of trim. I included a picture of one spot, but it was throughout the room. How this product is so well reviewed is beyond me. Either I got a bad pack with multiple bad rolls, or the other reviewers have never used anything else. If you're painting then you'd be better off with basically anything else. 1The One Tape to rule them all, and in the darkness, bind them I'm in the process of repainting the interior of my house, so I've tried pretty much every tool out there in the hopes that they will somehow make the painting quicker, easier, or both. I've also found that a careful tape job is very important to the end result. Slapping up the tape means lots of touch-ups later.I found this tape at a local paint shop several months ago. They had just gotten it, and it wasn't even for sale yet, but I convinced them to sell me a roll they had behind the counter.First, it isn't perfect (is anything?).You still have to tape carefully, aligning it just right and making sure the edge toward the paint is properly pressed down onto a clean surface. There is just no getting around that, especially if you want precision.Because this tape seems to be a form of plastic, rather than blue crepe paper, it won't absorb any paint. This is good in that it is more effective at blocking the paint from getting onto the taped surface, but bad in that if you don't wait long enough to remove it, the paint on its surface will still be wet.As expected, it is more expensive than the blue paper tape. In fact, it is a larger price difference than you might think on first glance. Check the length of the tape on the roll. It is lower than the paper equivalent, which means you are paying more per foot just because of that. It is just like the old trick of reducing the amount of cereal in the box while keeping the price the same. They've raised the price without making it obvious. How is it better?Well, it is a lot better. It is so much better I almost wish they would stop selling the older kind. If they lowered the price a bit, I'd be all in favor of that idea.It tears in a fairly clean line. The paint store manager went to the trade show where the tape was introduced, and told me one of the big selling points was the ability to tear the tape at a 90 degree angle. I've found that it is much easier to get a straight tear than with the paper tape, which is kind of surprising. You would think the plastic wouldn't tear at all because it has some stretch to it. I normally cut my ends with a scissor so that I can get the exact angle I want without deforming the tape, but sometimes tearing is a good choice, and for that, this is better. Just don't expect magic 90 degree cuts like you can get with a scissor because that's not going to happen. It does have some stretch to it, and while I try very hard not to stretch the paper tape because that causes paint leaks, this one is far more forgiving in that respect. That, along with the thinner thickness of the tape and greater pliability, means that you can tape off complex curves that are nearly impossible with paper tape almost effortlessly. It is fantastic for things like wall sconces, for example. The pliability takes a little getting used to because the paper tape is so much stiffer. It almost feels like it is going to fold over and stick all over itself, and this is easier than with paper tape, but luckily it doesn't stick so firmly to itself that you can't easily pull it apart and keep going if this happens. It also means that it "fights" you less when turning corners, like around windows. The paper tape always seems to be trying to pull away wherever it bends, and this tape doesn't do that. Curve, corner, bend; it just zips along like a roller coaster and lies down like it will never come up.3M has a lot of experience with adhesives. They make a lot of products, but if you squint, you'll notice adhesive is a very common selling point in many of their products. This one is very similar to the old tape, perhaps a little lighter because the thinner tape doesn't require as much force to keep it in place. I was concerned at first that I wouldn't be able to pull up the end when it came time to remove it, or that it would stick to itself strongly enough to turn into a sticky blue ball of twine and waste product, but they've nailed the adhesive on this. It is sticky enough to hang on as long as you need it to, while weak enough so that it can be repositioned and won't get stuck in the wrong places. I probably should have known. My guess is that they spent at least half the product development time fine tuning the adhesive.Very highly recommended, but grab an extra roll because it runs out more quickly than you might expect.Sean Logue, 2016 5Very disappointing, would NEVER purchase again We have been painting our house room by room for the last 2 years, so we've used plenty of tape and I have a pretty good idea how to use it (I take my time, press down on it firmly to make sure it sticks, use a brush to seal the edges before using the roller etc). I purchased this about 2 months ago and used it to paint in my daughters room. It stuck fine, but we did see some minor bleeding here and there, and it tore a lot as I removed it (next day after painting). I had some left on the roll and I pulled it out to use in another room. The surface has been washed (about 1 month ago) and is clean. I used it on baseboard, around the edges of the doors, on some already painted surfaces and on unpainted drywall. It almost immediately peeled back off the painted surfaces and from around the wood on the doorway. It was so loose on the painted surfaces I wasn't very careful pulling it off, and what do you know it tore off a bunch of paint. It stuck OK on the baseboard and the drywall. I'll have to re-tape a lot of what was done. Not happy and I will be looking for another brand. 1Performance is as described BUT, i can tell it curls much easier than the regular (paper based) tape.About 20-30% less sticky than the regular type, but thats part of the reason why it wont rip apart/come off easier, and was expected. Then again, having a less porous surface, means less paint gets soaked up by the tape, and it makes the tape a bit easier to sue when doing longer segments, as it wont rip even when being a bit careless. 4Love this stuff My remodelers introduced me to painter's tape. I use it a lot for posting/ displaying signs around the house (I host events featuring strangers from the internet often). My most recent project involved using a blacklight to identify areas a visiting cat had sprayed (tape its borders, then Natures Miracle, then Electrolyx carpet clean). I've yet to have it pull off my paint but (1) a competetor's brand, in yellow color, did bleed through the color of a blue Sharpie when left up for several months, and (2) I noticed the backing got rather sticky during my tape-the-Natures-Miracle carpet week (both of which are off-label uses for the product). From my and other reviewers' experiences, I stick to NAME BRAND versions. 5
