Customer Reviews

I did not realize this was a plastic bodyMAY 2016The Red Rabbit broke, a small plastic guide for the corkscrew in the body of the Rabbit fractured. The guide is like a disc with a hole in the center so the corkscrew tracks straight down into the cork and withdraws back up straight when pulling the cork. Contacted Taylor Instruments who now own the Metrokane line. They honored the warranty, asking for a photo of the broken Rabbit first. Upon receiving the photo, they said they would send out a new one. The whole process took about a month. The new Rabbit is black, and I would judge the black material to be more substantial than the red, not subject to scratching like the red finish, and it seems to work very well indeed. So my fears about the red plastic body seem unfounded. Hopefully the black version will work well for many years and not suffer the same failure as the red one. Kudos to Taylor for replacing the product under warranty. It is just a slow process, so you need another wine opener, which I had to by from Amazon also. Now I have two lever style wine openers, one from Taylor/Metrokane and one from Palermo, which was my stop gap.APR 2014Received in February. I worry about longevity. I kind of thought the red part was some kind of metal. It works fine, so far, so may be I am worried about nothing, but it does not have the heft or the look you expect from "real" all metal rabits. I do appreciate the smaller footprint, however. 3Broke after 4 years, immediate replacement.I thought this was awesome...until it broke...was ready to toss it, then saw that it had a 10 year warranty, customer service was fantastic, they sent me a new one. I had to take pics of the old one, no big deal, and email pics to them...they were prompt and courteous...what more could I ask... I did read that the new synthetic corks are harder on corkscrews, don't know if that was the problem. But as long as this new one works, I am happy. 4Get in the Rabbit HabitThis is a genius wine opener. The test will be seeing how it holds up...A friend of mine had a no-brand version of this. When I saw how quickly and easily it opened wine bottles, I knew I had to have one.Unfortunately, the twenty-buck special I bought from Amazon started messing up after just a few months of minimal use. The handle would jam in the open position. I wasn't surprised, because the bearings seemed to be very loose, right from the get go.This Rabbit opener costs more, but it seems to be better made. The handle swivels smoothly, and the bearings seem tight.Anyone who hasn't used a wine opener of this design is in for a treat. You just raise the handle, put the opener on top of the bottle, lower the handle, and raise it again. The cork is out, in three swift moves. One more tug on the handle, and the cork comes off the screw easy peasy. No more twisting or pulling! It's a godsend for arthritis sufferers like myself. We'll see how the Rabbit holds up. I'll report back if I encounter any problems...PROS:* Opens bottles faster and easier than any other corkscrew.* Cool design looks like a rabbit.* Appears to be well-made.* No batteries needed.* Comes with spare spiral, foil cutter.CONS:* More expensive than no-name openers. 5Looks good, but looks are deceiving.Delivery was quick. Unfortunately item is cheap and ours broke after opening one bottle of wine. Totally made out of plastic. Advertised as a "Rabbit", but honestly the Rabbit openers we had in the past were well built and lasted. Amazon took it back for a full refund, which was great. But look for a different wine bottle opener. This one poorly constructed. 1This is a no brainer!Easy, fast, works every time, requires little effort, and no destroyed corks. It is my favorite wine opener. I have an Ozeri electric wine opener also, which I like a lot, but the Metrokane is so quick and easy, you can't go wrong with it. Opening a bottle once you have the foil off, from start to finish, including ejecting the cork (that's 2 full down-up cycles of the handle), takes less than 5 seconds. It is solidly built, and has nice heft to it. The foil cutter is very efficient, too. And I find the vertical rabbit approach is MUCH easier than the traditional rabbit (or any other opener, for that matter) - the geometry is simply better - you have better leverage for less effort. If you love wine (if you don't, your probably are not reading this, but you have my sympathies), you will love this opener. 5Waste of moneyPathetic, we use it regularly, maybe opening two to three bottles of wine a week. bought it April 1 2015. After opening a bottle on 1/19/16 a plastic piece that holds the actual corkscrew in place, broke making the item useless. Though return was only possible through May of 2015, it seems ridiculous that it would break after only 10 months. It was $30 from Amazon though much more from the retailer. It appears hefty on the outside, heavy metal, etc. The inside, where most physical action occurs, is cheap plastic. I would never buy this product again, a total waste of money. 1Gave this one to a good friend for XmasHave had a Rabbit of my own for many years and it it the safest and most reliable corkscrew for the price. Gave this one to a good friend for Xmas. Foil cutter does the job well, easy to use. Raise the handle, place the opening over the wine bottle, squeeze your hand around the middle, pull down the handle all the way inserting the screw into the cork, pull up on the handle while still grasping the middle of the cork screw, the cork is now removed, remove corkscrew from atop wine bottle, grasp the middle of the corkscrew while pulling down and back up on the handle, this will eject the cork.I haven't had any issues where the cork breaking inside the bottle, very little has this happened with the Rabbit. If so the best tool is the cork screw that has the 2 metal fingers and a handle. This one slides down on two sides of the remaining cork and can retrieve the broken cork, about 95% of the time. Sorry don't have the actual name of that cork screw. Have got mine at most wineries as they have their name on it. 5Great if you have certain types of arthritis and want to cut down on your drinking! The corkscrew requires three actions:Push the handle down to put the worm through the cork.Pull the lever up to pull the cork.Push the lever down to remove the cork from the corkscrew.I purchased this for someone whose arthritis makes it difficult to hold things. Pushing the lever down was straightforward, but pulling it up to pull the cork from the bottle was not. I had to take over. I checked other reviews before purchasing this corkscrew. Those that mentioned arthritis said unanimouosly that those with arthritis had no trouble with this corkscrew. Well, now it's not unanimous. While its technology is more primitive, the Screwpull http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006590AA/ purchased two years is still able to do the job.If arthritis is not an issue, then the Metrokane is fast, slick and could easily be worth 5 stars. However, if arthritis is an issue, this device is not the solution. 1Good old reliableI gave up on all the electric openers and went back to the Rabbit. Easy to use and works very well on all types of cork. Replaceable spiral is a big positive as I find the synthetic corks tend to beat up the spiral over time.10/25/16-review update-Opener locked up after 9 months. I contacted TAYLOR Precision Products (Metrokane Rabbit) who requested I complete a simple e mail noting problem and attach photos showing Rabbit along with proof of purchase. I did so and 12 days later received a new vertical Rabbit with spare spiral and foil cutter. I did not have to return broken Rabbit. I am disappointed that first unit failed and replacement was black rather my original red but delighted with customer service quick response and ease of replacement. Hope new Rabbit, which has a slightly different handle, lasts longer as I love it's ease of use. 5So glad I have thisI bought two of these for a mother and sister-in-law. They had the same idea and bought us this Metrokane Rabbit: http://www.amazon.com/Metrokane-Rabbit-Wine-Opener-Silver/dp/B000063K7G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391965457&sr=8-1&keywords=rabbit+wine+openerSo we bought them different presents, kept these ones, and ended up with both types of Metrokane to compare, and we have by FAR preferred this one. This red Metrokane just does the trick, even for incompetent wine-openers (no more patronizingly offering to do it for the newbies, it has become a fun conversation topic instead). This grasps the neck of the bottle perfectly (there's no awkward positioning of it- it knows right where to go!), the lever is built tough and works with ease and smoothness. Last night I struggled to remove an years-old, shredding cork with an old-fashion corkscrew before I remembered we had this amazing tool (old habits die hard). This fit right over it, commanded that cork out of the bottle in one piece, and then deposited it politely out of the mechanism afterward. With the other Metrokane, the two levers that close over the neck are tough to position and tighten properly, and it doesn't work as smoothly. Getting the cork out of the screw afterwards is much more challenging, and having to squeeze multiple parts of it just ruins the excitement of having a $40 tool at your disposal.I spent hours reading reviews before I chose to get this type, and now I'm glad they're ours. I'll recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and easy way to open wine. 5
