Customer Reviews

My Fav Fountain PensI own several of these Pilot Prera fountain pens in the "Iro-Ai" Transparent colour models. This is my first Prera opaque pen.Like the others, it's a top-notch performer, well worth twice its asking price.I always use the "Fine" nibs which write very legibly with crisp, narrow lines. Being a Japanese nib, the Fine is the equivalent to an Extra Fine in an American fountain pen.The Prera is a shorter-than-average pen, measuring 5" in length capped. It's diameter though is average, making for a comfortable writing experience, even over long periods of time. This "Soft" blue Prera performs equally well as my other Preras. The only thing I wanted to point out about this particular colour is that it differs in actuality from that depicted in the product description. If you'll reference my provided photo, you'll see it's actually more of a soft medium-turquoise shade. It should also be noted that while the transparent colored Iro-Ai Preras come with a converter, these opaque Preras only ship with a black ink cartridge. No converter is included.I ordered a Pilot CON-50 converter at the same time I ordered my fountain pen. This converter fits both these opaque Preras, as well as the transparent Iro-Ai models.Pilot Prera. My favourite fountain pens. Since discovering these great little pens, even my Mont Blancs have been spending a lot of time in their pen cases. Thanks for reading,-CC, Amazon Prime Member-Reviewer5What a beautiful, easy to use pen!!I LOVE this pen. It's lightweight, shiny and classy. The blue is GORGEOUS. I had no issues getting the ink to start, and the pen writes very smoothly. I wasn't sure I would like it as much as my Kakuno, which writes incredibly smoothly and doesn't seem to dry out quickly, but so far I love it just as much. Highly recommended!! (Of note - this pen does come with a cartridge, and it seems to be the same cartridge as the Pilot Metro and Kakuno, which makes refills a lot easier for this pen lover!!)5A 'fine' pocket penThis is shorter than any of the other pens I own. As mentioned in other reviews that's ok so long as you post the cap to make up for the length. Be aware the color in the picture is too dark, the one shown here is closer, but still darker than the 50 percent tone gray of the actual pen. While there is no converter, I've filled an empty Pilot cartage from another pen saved for this purpose. It is very light weight which is perfect for a shirt pocket. The fine on Pilot pens are like extra fine...which is 'fine' by me. As an artist I'm always looking for a fine detailed pen to sketch and write with. This pen is perfect. If you are bargain hunting, try the extra fine Pilot Plumix, (All the other Plumix line are stubs) the body is a little strange, that's the reason for transferring the nib to a Prera or Metropolitan.I find the Metropolitan and MR to be a lot heavier than the Prera. That makes them fine for writing in italic, but harder to sketch with. The four stars is for the amount of time it took to arrive from Japan. Granted it's far away and these are as good as price you are going to get anywhere, but if you need it for a gift or some other reason to have it with in a week, you will have to pay nearly twice as much to buy in the USA.4So far, my favorite fountain pen of all! This is a great improvement over even the Pilot Metropolitan. While it has the same great (but proprietary) cartridge, you can easily refill it from bottled ink by eyedropper after you pull out the tilt-disc. This fine nib is truly fine, not some medium. The seal of the cap is far superior to the Metropolitan, so it does not dry out in storage nearly as quickly. The plastic body is very durable and its blue color is very saturated; it goes really well with Noodler's Baystate Blue ink. The clip is very smooth and inserts easily into a pocket yet holds securely. The closed pen fits into any standard shirt pocket and does not stick up above the top of the pocket to hold open any button-flap over the pocket. The cap posts firmly and securely on the top of the pen for writing. The improvements of this pen over the next model down (Metropolitan) in the lineup are very much worth the slightly higher price.5One great writing pen!!I love these pilot (platinum class) pens and nibs. It is as smooth as any fine nib pen in my gang of pens. The lid snaps closed with a seal and the nib never dries out or starts slowly. The size of the pen barrel is great for my adult large sized hand. I write left handed. I use the proprietary Pilot cartridge. This is my second Piera...... lost the first one between BWI and DFW.My "go to" pen is a Pilot vanishing point but I always worry when using it (dropped it once: = $70 for a new nib unit). With the Piera, I just use it without fear. Too bad they couldn't make the Piera in a retractable nib with the low price point.5A winner by my measureThis is a good little pen! Actually, it's great. I love everything about it, the nib is smooth and perfectly fine, the color is subtle but bold and strong, and if you care about such things, should match whatever you're writing on or wearing. I have only one complaint (hence the four starts not five), and that's that I wish it were just a little heavier. It's light enough to take anywhere, true, but when I'm writing I get just the faintest hint that this is a cheaply made pen. To be fair, that goes away the second I put the cap back on. There's a very satisfying seal that takes just a bit of effort to brush past, then a very tactile click when the cap is secure. If it didn't write so darn well, I'd have to say that is my favorite part of the pen! Overall, if you like a light pen with great writing characteristics, this is your mark!4not too badSurprisingly short, otherwise nice design. Would have loved it if it was 15-20% larger overall.Comfortable to hold, more comfortable and thicker than the Metropolitan, when posted. Otherwise too short.Thin and light plastic. The metal accents/rings help, but it still does not feel sturdy. A Lamy Safari, even if all plastic, feels sturdier.Overpriced, at least compared to the Metropolitan. The blue is not as dark as it shows in the pics here, it is lighter and less appealing, for me at least. No converter included, unlike the Metropolitan.OK for a schoolboy, not for a professional.Fine nib writes OK, not too scratchy.3A featherweight gem of a fountain penI had my eye on this pen for a while and had a hard time finding a US seller who carried this particular model. I went ahead and ordered knowing it would take a while getting shipped from Japan. It was worth the wait. The first thing I noticed about it was how light it is. The Prera is a serious featherweight of a pen. My Pilot Kakuno which is also plastic and designed for use by schoolchildren actually felt a bit heavier than this. It's far too light to use unposted in my opinion. The cap does post very solidly and gives more balance to the pen as you write. The color is a bit different from the pictures, but I still like it. The stainless nib is fairly stiff and needs some breaking in before it starts to shine. I use Noodler's Black for this and most of my pens and it works quite well. Overall I'd say this is a really good everyday writer. Pilot never skimps on quality.4Great Beginner fountain pen!SO to preface this I am a beginning fountain pen user. I got this to replace my very favorite pen the tul .5mm gel pen and I am 100% satisfied. I didn't rinse the pen I just popped in the cartridge, waited a minute with the nib pointed down, and got writing! The inkflow is steady and never bleeds too much. By that I mean I can write at various speeds with a consistent line thickness. I am using the ink that came with this so that might be why it's working so well. Also it's lightweight but balanced really well. The barrel is a good thickness for my hand which are a medium in vinyl gloves (if you know you know). Also this is a plastic pen but I dont find it too slidy. I would prefer a material with more grip for when my hand are freshly moisturized but that's a minor concern. That all said.... This pen had to lose a point for the fact that I got the vivid pink instead of a green pen :(Overall very satisfied and I highly recommend to start your foray into sustainable (and fashionable) alternatives to disposable ball-points.4Perfect size fine nibAnd first I was a little thrown off by how light and plastic and small it is, but after using it for a week I gotta say so far I'm liking it. The one thing I really like is the fine nib. Finally after a Metropolitan med, A Plummix italic (Which is super awesome but not for work) and a penmanship extra fine (which is almost unwritable for me, maybe needs an adjustment) this nib suits my small handwriting the best but keeps a great flow. the size is hit or miss for me right now, it fits in my front small jeans pocket (where your supposed to keep a watch or change or whatever), I can hold it comfortably between my fingers as I casual type, not full on typing though. And the lid feels so nice going on or off. Posts nice to, I rarely do this though. And hopefully the pen will hold up over time as it kinda feels like a strong plastic, just does not feel as sturdy as the Metro. Anyway, that's all I have to say about that.5
