Customer Reviews

Great muffs I'm an avid shooter, shooting at least weekly. I'm mostly confined to indoor ranges. If you've shot much at an indoor range, you know it can be deafening, you're almost required to double up with plugs and muffs, especially around rifles. I went from cheap peltor shotgunners years ago, to advanced electronic ear muffs. I've tried numerous plugs and muffs in this time. I discovered, for me, a combination of foam plugs, and passive (non-electronic) muffs to be best. I wanted the highest db attenuation in my muffs, so I tried a few pair and settled on these X5a's. I also like gel ear cup surrounds, so I ordered the 3m peltor gel cup kit. As of now, I'm running these X5A's with gel cups, over some howard leight corded foam plugs. No, these aren't as sexy as some MSA Sordins or peltor comtac's; the muffs stick out about a mile from your head, making you look like an alien. I'm more worried about sound suppression than looks, so I choose this route. Yes, I paid twice as much for the gel cups as I did the actual muffs, but they still come in at well under most top tier electronic muffs, and these have MUCH superior sound dampening. Also, yes you can hear the range officers shouting commands, even with plugs under the muffs. Normal conversation, not so much; loud talking or shouting, yes. I do wish these folded like most muffs, but I can live with them as is. 5Best Comfy Sound Protection I've Found. These are absolutely not the first headphones I've used to try to block out noise. But they're the first ones to fit somewhat comfortably, without squeezing my head like a vice. They are still a little tight, but very secure, and the pressure seems more widely distributed, which is positive. I think with time, I'll be more comfortable. But as far as comfort goes, this is really not bad at all.Other earmuffs (whatever you may call them) are either super cheap, broken, or incredibly tight and painful on my ears and head. One set I even struggled to open apart to put on my head at all. They folded up and took a minute to unfold as well. When I first put these earmuffs on, the world absolutely fell silent. I heard nothing for the first time ever. It was beautiful. I'm impressed in that regard. It actually does what it's supposed to, and it's designed well also. I feel that the design is remarkable. The earmuffs are adjustable in size, but they pretty much fit me perfectly from out of the box. The earpieces are really big and wide in profile. And that is the one sacrifice. I honestly think I might be too embarassed to wear such a big contraption on my head, in public, unless I had no other choice.. actually, I guess it's not that bad. I'm already used to being stared at.And I'm living for myself, and no one else. So who cares? I sure as hell shouldn't. I'd be happy at least.I'm ordering another pair, but in a lesser decimal protection unfortunately. But they look cooler- skinnier, and with some neon yellow flash.I don't shoot guns and I never will. Nor do I work around noisy construction sites. I need to be protected around everyday life, including people, their voices and places.I'm usually pretty fashion-forward. But I also value and need to protect my health at the moment. Health is my number 1 priority. Without it, I have nothing.Besides, because of the even distribution of weight, the Princess Leia look is lighter than it appears.I need these earmuffs to block out sound. I suffer from sensory sensitivity to the point where I'm now in almost complete isolation. Misophonia. Fibromyalgia. Etc.It makes life really difficult when I can't handle normal smells, sounds and lights, or anything rapid in movement. It gets a lot deeper than just that. This is on top of much grief and chronic pain.So these 3M Peltor headphones are the first step to finding some peace in this increasingly noisy world.Oh and another thing.. this won't concern everyone. But the inside of the earpieces are oval and hollow to allow my ears to fit comfortably inside. They fit right around my ears, thus protecting my left triple ear cartilage piercing. It always feels sore if I touch the area around the piercings. But the earmuff earpieces are a really nice fit, and I appreciate that. There isn't great pressure against my ears, and that's vital. So yeah I'm gonna give this 5 stars now. It's not perfect, and it doesn't particularly feel like a snuggly fur scarf. But this is a huge improvement from my past attempts to block out noise.I admit, I will have to get used to these, and they will irritate me sometimes, if I have to wear them for a long period of time. But it's a great start regardless. If you want good sound protection, there is no doubt that these will do it for you. I'm a petite woman, just so you know. I can see how these can fit almost anybody. Women and men alike. Teens as well.I'm pretty happy with this purchase. I just hope that one day the protection can be slimmer in profile, and softer and more comfortable as a whole, without sacrificing the noise blocking ability.Get this. It works. Well. 5WOW! These deliver! I've owned and used (heavily) both 3M Peltor's Optime 105 and Ultimate 10 earmuffs. Those both do an equally great job and have a high rating for protection that is proven. After 3 years of using those two, I was ecstatic to see the X-Series X5A on the market as an upgrade in their ear protection line. These earmuffs are very well designed and constructed with premium materials compared to the Optime 105 and Ultimate 10's construction. They are more snug, more comfortable and most importantly, they provide a higher level of protection that is seriously noticeable. I'll never go back, as this pair of earmuffs is unquestionably worth its salt.Experience: Full-time major airline Ramp Agent.Very highly recommended! 5Amazing! i wasted money on the 35db rated cleararmour(pictured ... Amazing! i wasted money on the 35db rated cleararmour(pictured on left), the best selling earmuffs listed on amazon!.the 3Ms are really well worth the money. Much more comfortable, you could tell its built tough with quality materials. Compared to the 35db rated cleararmour, the pelter do better job at blocking street noise below my apartment. 5Impressive, not perfect and not for everybody ... My older earmuff was the Howard Leight Leightning L3 ...When i received this X5A i was shocked by how heavy it is compared to the L3. I went to the 3M website and sure enough the X5A weighs 12 ounces compared to 8 ounces for X3A and 6 ounces for X1A - this is one HEAVY earmuff ! It is also very deep. But that's how it manages the outstanding 31db NRR.I compared the new X5A back to back with my aging L3 and sure enough the X5A murdered it. the attenuation of high frequencies was comparable, but when it came to the lows there was no comparison - the X5A was MUCH stronger in attenuation of the bass. i verified this by playing music on my DJ speakers while wearing both earmuffs. the X5A in fact is so strong that in a quiet environment it can get a bit uncomfortable psychologically. of course, there is no reason to wear them in a quiet room.when i tapped on the side of the earmuff while having them on the L3 was very loud, but the X5A much less loud. this just confirmed what i already knew - the X5A has a much stronger, heavier, deeper shell, which also seems to be made out of a more non-resonant plastic.but the shell is only half of earmuff performance - the seal of the earpad is the other half. and once again X5A murders the L3 here as well. the seal is OUTSTANDING. it is super soft, the shape is super smooth ( no square corners like the L3 ) and feels more like gel than foam - it is soft but substantial. it works amazingly well both for comfort and sound isolation.the strong, deep shell combined with the soft yet substantial earpad that contours to your head combine to produce the outstanding acoustical performance of this earmuff ...so why only 4 stars ?2 reasons:1 - it is heavy. 50% heavier than X3A and it seems about 50% heavier than my L3.2 ( and this is the important reason ) - the headband doesn't work properly. the earmuff tends to slowly slide down and i find myself readjusting it up. this may be because of how heavy the earmuff is, or because the design of the headband is flawed. the headband itself is very strong - just like he earmuff itself - the build quality of the headband is outstanding. but the design doesn't seem to work. it is extremely comfortable, but just doesn't really hold the earmuff in place - lets it gradually slide down ...also it is hard to understand what people are saying in this earmuff. this is probably to be expected from a 31db NRR earmuff but it may not be what some people are looking for. i am NOT deducting any stars for this, but instead just warning those who may not realize this. it is noticeably harder to understand people in the X5A than it is in L3.should you get this earmuff ?YES if you want a high degree of protection from low frequencies.NO if you want something that is light and / or small and / or cheap.NO if you want something that will not interfere with your ability to understand speech etc.NO if you want a headband that holds without slippingso why am i still giving it 4 stars and not say 2 or 3 stars ? because overall the build quality and performance are truly impressive and went far beyond my expectations having previously owned Bilsom L3 which was considered one of the best. even the headband which in my opinion doesn't work is constructed spectacularly well.i give X5A four stars because they set out to produce something exceptional and they hit most of their targets, failing on just one count, which never the less is quite important. 4Best investment for people with hypersensitive hearing One of the best investments that I have ever made in my entire life.I am very light sleeper and also enjoy peach and quiet when doing activities such as studying. Although these earmuffs do not offer 100% silence they have dulled the tone to where I can comfortable sleep and rest. I have hyper sensitivity with hearing, smells, and tastes, and also sight. More sensitive with hearing and smells; and the earmuffs have made noises that appear noisy to me, become more natural; like the sounds of nature. The sounds appear like slight vibrations and some small humming.A good description for these earmuffs are: a person 2 feet from you talks to you and you are able to hear them clearly because they are so close; Now when I put the earmuffs on, and they are talking, their audibility has been reduced by about 30-40%, it is as if they used the same voice level to talk to me but they are now 100ft away and in a different room. These earmuffs have made a world of difference; and it allows me to better focus on tasks. The comfort of the earmuffs takes some getting used to; as it is somewhat tight; but they are comfortable enough for me; and I can wear it for hours on end. 5Best Ear Protection That You Can Buy! I was searching for ear protection to use at the firing range and I was mystified at the myriad of products...which to choose? You can pay $50, $100 or even $200 for electronic ear protection that do not even get close to NRR 31db.What is the story? Why is this so confusing. Just give me a headset that cuts out the noise to the greatest extent possible. But this 3M Peltor X5 is not $200, not $100 and not even $50. It must be junk!Oh, how wrong you would be if you took these prices to be an indication of its effectiveness to do Just One Thing: BLOCK NOISE.I have the largest head of anyone that I have ever known and it fits comfortably. No fit issues whatsoever.I have the original Bose Noise-Cancelation Headphone...and it keep on ticking and takes a licking. I have replaced the foam that encircles the ear twice and it is great. But for noise blocking, these 3M Peltor X5 series X5 are even better as it blocks all sound frequencies whereas my Bose blocks highs and lows but allows midrange to pass to the ear, albeit damped. These X5 are huge...or more accurately wide. I don't know how they block the noise but they BLOCK all the sound coming from my TV. Now, that's good.5 Stars. It is well deserved for a well made, quality product. If you need to listen to music, then these ain't for you. If you want to focus all of your attention to whatever you are looking at, then these are the best that money can buy. Oh, they are cheaper than nearly all of the electronic headsets...well then, that's a miracle.Go ahead and buy something else, but you'll eventually try these and wonder why you wasted all that money.Great product. 5The cone of slience First, let me express my sincerest regret that many of us need earmuffs like these to shield us from inconsiderate neighbors. It's a real shame. These mufflers are the real deal " Cone of Silence". They effectively block all frequencies of sound to the extent that you have to concentrate to hear any residual noise that gets through them.THE choice for areas of high mechanically generated noise, or when near dead silence is desired above all other parameters. Please be careful and mindful of your surroundings when using these as it will be difficult to hear any audible warning of impending danger- you just won't hear it.They are not however suitable for using as an "anti-snore" device, as the muffs, while having comfortable ear padding (feels like memory foam), are too large for anything except dead on, face up pillow positions. In addition, I find their clamping strength on your ears, while surely contributory to their excellent noise reduction, is just too strong to get 'sleep comfortable' in.Super high quality materials and construction make this an excellent choice for hearing protection. 5Function over fashion I'm sort of a nut about hearing protection. I lost a little hearing as a kid so I want to protect what I have left. I play the drums, shoot guns, and enjoy loud live rock and roll. I own ear foam plugs, hi-fi ear plugs (baffles), electronic ear muffs, slim or lo-profile ear muffs, standard ear muffs, and now these extreme muffs. If you are looking for something that provides moderate hearing protection-- either because the noise you have to deal with isn't very loud (low volume) or you actually want to hear a bit of noise through the muffs (such as while playing the drums for hearing other band members, or riding on a mower or using a chainsaw where you might need situational awareness for safety)-- these ear muffs might be overkill. These ear muffs are the kind best suited for a jet runway or a very loud manufacturing plant. They are pretty extreme and very, very quiet. I wouldn't wear then walking around the street or in a car.I'm going to keep the pair I ordered and use them for studying and occasional use at the indoor gun range. They are well-constructed and very comfortable. The memory foam ear pads are great, and the overall shape is streamlined so they don't snag on things. They seem durable and like they'll last. I don't like that the acoustic foam in the ear cup is exposed without a liner, but I can always clean dust out with an air compressor. A couple other things to mention:(1) They are a lighter grey than what is really pictured. Maybe it's just the lighting in the picture.(2) They are BIG. They look ridiculous on. Then again, these are for function vs. fashion.(3) Because they are big, you may have some problems getting a good cheek weld on the stock of your rifle if shooting.Protect your ears and encourage others to do the same! 5Silence delivered. Smoothly. These are my second earmuffs from 3M Peltor (I've previously purchased the 3M Peltor H10A Optime 105 Earmuff) and I absolutely love them. It is great to know that I can study on any given condition (no matter how loud my brother plays the bass or my parents watch the latest show from Coldplay). So here's a couple reasons you should consider purchasing one of those yourself:1) They muffle the sound okay (about 80% of all the environment sound, gone!) and let you sleep on a plane while that crying baby pisses everybody off;2) They don't require batteries, which, trust me, is pretty awesome in itself. I have both a Bose CQ-15 and a Bose QuietComfort 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones (did I mention that I'm a huge lover of silence?) but though these use some pretty sofisticated noise cancelling technology to block out the surrounding sounds, once the battery dies your peace goes with it.Bonus) They are not as bulky as the 3M Peltor H10A Optime 105 -- and I'd say its design is simpler and a bit lighter, which makes me reach for the X-Series instead of the latter.-- Now, if you're looking for some serious quietude you might try using both these 3M Peltor and the Bose QuietComfort 20i. Oh, and don't forget to choose a good meditation soundtrack.Hope this review helps! =) 5
