Customer Reviews

Makes THE BEST mashed potatoes imaginableI have wanted a potato rice for so long, but I wasn't ready for how decadent my mashed potatoes would be! This ricer truly is a game changer. Whatever I thought I knew and liked about mashed potatoes was wrong. This ricer makes the silkiest, creamiest potatoes. As strange as it is, the mouth-feel is fantastic and I find myself needing less butter and milk/cream.That being said, I do find this potato ricer a bit cumbersome, especially if you are mashing 5 pounds of potatoes. The handle is not as ergonomic (read: comfortable to hold) as I have come to expect from OXO. I do, however, think it provides great leverage so the mashing is simple. Also, after filling the chamber and squeezing the handle, some of the potato manages to make its way around the sides of the hinged masher plate so that potato is sitting on top of it. It does this not matter how much or little potato you add. I think its just eh way it was designed. This means that potato will probably end up on your counters (or bowl) when you pull the masher plate back up and flip it out of the way to add more potatoes to the chamber. It's not the end of the world and I'm not a very neat cook in the kitchen anyway. If making a mess while cooking makes your eye start to twitch, you may want to check out another ricer. 4My new favorite gadget!I made the best mashed potatoes I've ever eaten when I used this ricer for the first time! I took the advice of several other reviewers and cut them into pieces that fit easily into the ricer, closing the handles was effortless and I have neither large nor strong hands. When I had finished putting through the potatoes I gave the ricer a quick rinse. I was amazed by how easily the bits and pieces released at that point; washing it after dinner was a breeze. I highly recommend this ricer, I wish I had had it when I was making mashed 'taters for my family at least 3 times a week. 5Looked like it might be a bit small, but wasn't, and worked very wellAppears to be all stainless (I hope that the hinges are, too). It did a great job. We have three ricers (this was for our daughter), and it's better than any of the others, which include a chromed-steel model that rusts, an aluminum that can't be put in the dishwasher, and a stainless model that has rusting hinges. From the photos and some of the reviews, it looked like this might be a bit small and take forever to rice a large amount of boiled potatoes, but it's fairly deep and holds as much as any of our other ricers. Would buy this again. 5Exactly what I neededI made the smoothest riced mashed potatoes the day I got this. It seemed like it didn't hold enough at a time at first, but once I got to ricin', it actually was perfect. I filled the dish about 3/4 full, pressed it, and it was immediately ready for the next scoop. The best part about this doodad is the way it opens in one swing. You don't have to open it then move the presser out of the way. When you open it fully, the press moves itself to an open position, but still just in the right spot to immediately press another batch. I love when there are no wasted motions!! It makes the chore of mashing potatoes really fun!!! 5Works very well!Admittedly, this is the first ricer that I've purchased so I don't have anything to compare it to other than traditional mashing methods used since the beginning of time. Its made very well (I've dropped it twice without breaking anything) Depending on the size of bowl you're using, you can prop the ricer across the top while you load your cooked potatoes into it. Providing that you've cooked your potatoes long enough, you can press them through this thing EVEN WITH THE SKIN STILL ON! My son was very greatful that he didn't have to peel all of the potatoes lol. We simply washed equal amounts of golden & russet potatoes, cut them into fairly even chunks, & boiled them in salted water. After they were fully cooked, I drained them & then returned them to the pan on medium heat to dry them a bit more. Then I pressed them through the ricer. The skins remained in the ricer after squeezing the potato through & I discarded them before adding more potatoes. After gently folding melted butter into the pressed potatoes, I was so impressed with the smooth & creamy texture that I didn't even add any milk or cream! This does take some squeezing muscles..I'm a weakling, yet I managed just fine..however this might not be the best option for those that have severe difficulty with squeezing things so please be aware. I'm so happy I decided to buy this & wont ever make potatoes without it again 5Quite a disappointment, very small and not well madeQuite a disappointment. First of all this thing is so small it wont fit across a decent sized pot. I was stunned at the size when it arrived. Ok, so I put it on a smaller pot. On sizing, a large apple would not fit in the basket. Its probably 3.5-4" diameter. I used it to rice well done red potatoes and instead of fitting tightly to the basket, the mashing plate seemed quite a bit smaller so extra potato would shoot out of the top unit instead of being mashed. I had about a 20% waste ratio of material that never made it through the ricer. I'd recommend you look elsewhere. 1Better than the Culina!I originally bought a different potato ricer that was plastic with interchangeable metal plates. I quickly learned that fancier is not always better with this type of utensil. It takes a fair amount of hand strength to squeeze potatoes through a ricer and with my first model I felt that if I applied too much stress to the handles then they would break. I have many other OXO products in my kitchen so when I found their ricer and discovered that it is all stainless steel construction I knew I had to have it. I was not going to pay the price Amazon was charging, though. Eventually the price dropped and I snapped it right up. This item is large and feels completely sturdy and substantial. Very happy with my purchase. 5My New Favorite Kitchen GadgetAfter one botched batch of Thanksgiving mashed potatoes, I stubbornly avoided making them homemade for years because I complained they were too much work. Well, not anymore! This ricer gets the potatoes instantly the precise texture you want and it's just as simple and fill-and-squeeze. Obviously, you need to make sure the potatoes are cooked thoroughly or else it won't work, but it really is a huge time/energy saver. Sure, it's a pretty limited gadget in what it can do, but totally worth it, in my opinion. 5The basket is quite small, also very hard to ...The basket is quite small, also very hard to squeeze. We had an antique one,,,basket a lot larger and all tho it took some muscle, worked much easier. 1Broke during 2nd useI bought this just 2 months ago and have only gently used it twice. The second time I noticed the front handle with the black grip just fell off in the sink. At first I thought it was something I could just put back on but not happening with this product. 1
