Never fear cutting up pineapple again! I love pineapple. Hate the fuss of cutting it up. This gadget, which I learned about on America's Test Kitchen, has solved the problem! All you do is cut (or twist) the top of the pineapple off, then place the toothed circle at the bottom of the slicer over the pale central core of the pineapple, and twist the slicer clockwise into the pineapple. The ratchet makes it even easier. When you've gotten almost to the bottom of the pineapple, you simply rock it a little bit and pull the slicer straight out. It comes out with a big cylinder of pineapple, and the core is inside the tool (it is easy to poke/push out from there). You can even use a sharp paring knife and cut the pineapple cylinder straight down to make chunks - 6-8 cuts gives nice manageable chunks for fruit salad. There's a wee bit of waste (the cylinder of pineapple you remove is never the full thickness of the pineapple), but you can minimise that by buying slender/longer pineapples, no kidding. Also, I have done as another person mentioned, and filleted the left-behind pineapple off the inside of the hollowed out pineapple - very easy and you get a bunch more pineapple that way.I love this thing. Now I buy a pineapple knowing I can have it cut up in about 5 minutes, with very little effort or mess. If you like pineapple, this is a really good buy. 5Excellent! Works great! I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I think they should have included a "poker" of some sort to expel the pineapple core from the slicing cylinder. Perhaps they could have built one into the black handle part, like an apple corer? The ratcheting mechanism is a plus.UPDATE: I discovered that the pineapple core does not become lodged in the cylinder if one doesn't drill all the way down to the bottom of the pineapple. If you stop drilling before going through the bottom, the core remains attached to the pineapple shell. When you pull the device out, the core stays behind. Thus, a "poker" is not required and I have changed my rating to "5 stars". 5I didn't know I needed this so much until I started using it. I love pineapple, especially fresh pineapple. I have spent years buying my beloved fruit already cut up and sold in those clear plastic, half quart, "convenience" containers at the grocery store. Yes, I was completely intimidated by the stack of whole, fresh from the field, pineapples, despite the clear monitary savings they offered. Because of my reluctance to attempt to remove the delicious fruit from its spiney skin, I paid three times as much for some unknown person to cut up my pineapple and drop it in a plastic tub.All this changed when I discovered the OXO Good Grips Stainless Steel Ratcheting Pineapple Slicer! This little tool is fabulous!!! It peals and cores a fresh pineapple in less than a minute. Simply slice off the top of the pineapple and use the OXO tool to create a long coil of uniformly cut, rings of pineapple. The hard core of the fruit is seperated and out slides a golden cylinder of deliciousness. I was amazed at how much better this pineapple tastes than that precut stuff I had been buying. The tool has already paid for itself in the money I have saved from the prepackaged stuff I used to buy.Don't hesitate to purchase this tool. It is easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to store. The ratcheting handle allows you to work faster and to apply consistent pressure as you work. There are even measuring marks on the cylinder of the tool to help insure you don't cut through the bottom of the fruit. The intact skin left after you remove the fruit makes a unique serving container or even a nifty drinking vessel. Iced tea served in a fresh pineapple cup is delicious and delightful, though I do recommend using a straw when serving.You really can't go wrong with this product. Just for clarification, I have received NO compensation for my review. I truly just like this tool this much. 5It works a bazillion times better than hand-slicing. I love pineapples. They're far-and-away my favorite fruit. I could probably eat a whole pineapple in one sitting, although I've admittedly never done it. I also had no idea such a tool for slicing and coring a pineapple existed. So, I bought it and gave it a go. It's actually really easy to use and quite simple in it's design. Essentially, the top of the pineapple gets cut off with a sharp knife, you roughly measure the depth of your pineapple with a gauge etched into the side of the tool, center the cutter in the pineapple, push down and turn. The handle ratchets, which is ingenious, so you can go about a half turn or so, get new leverage and keep going. Once you cut down to the mark you measured earlier the whole thing lifts out and you're left with the shell of the pineapple. The inedible core is embedded inside the hollow part of the tool and a beautiful spiral of delicious pineapple is left on the outside. The handle comes off the tool very easily which allows you to slide the spiral of fruit off. The only difficult part I've encountered is the core. Sometimes it will really wedge itself inside the hollow part of the tool and become difficult to push out. They all come out eventually, but some are a bit more stubborn than others. I'd say that's probably just the way it is; I doubt there's much that can be done to change it. It's comfortable and relatively easy to clean, aside from the aforementioned stuck core problem I've had. Overall, it's about a billion times faster and easier to cut a pineapple with this thing than doing with a knife like a barbarian. 4Pineapple Lovers Must-have I've used tools like this only for a short time. I've always done it the hard way and became quite good at using a knife until I bought a plastic slicer. It lasted about 3 months before it broke. I immediately replaced it with the OXO with the thought that it would last for years instead of months. I'm sure I made the right decision. This unit is solid, well made and with the ratchet mechanism makes an easy job even easier. Much easier than the plastic slicer I was using previously and I thought that was pretty easy. Two locking buttons on opposite sides of the shaft make it easy to remove the spiral sliced fruit and making cleaning a job that can be done in seconds. A protective end cap is included to place over the cutter tube to protect the teeth from accidental damage in the drawer where I store the slicer. I would definitely recommend this product. Don't waste your time buying plastic slicers that will only break. Buy something stainless steel like this one. 5A Game Changer Pineapple... one of those fruits I never buy because when whole it is the biggest pain in the world to peel and cut and I never buy pre-cut because it is usually $7 for a container of a half pineapple when a whole pineapple costs $2.99 in the same store.Then I bought one of these babies and it changed pineapple for me forever. I can finally buy it. Chop the head off the pineapple, effortlessly twist, ratchet, repeat, and then pull out your perfect pineapple rings. Amazing. No crocodile skin, no brown needle things, no core. Just perfect pineapple and an empty pineapple shell with almost no meat left inside.In case you could tell I highly recommend. This version is super high quality and is mostly stainless steel. Cleanup take 5 seconds and really just requires a quick soapy rinse.Buy it. 5JUNK I bought this one after my cheap plastic one broke after 15 years of use. I upgraded to steal thinking it would cut even better. This thing is junk! Rather than cutting the pineapple, it just shreds it (see pic). It's also small, so it wastes at least a quarter of good pineapple. I had no idea how good I had it with my $5 plastic pineapple cutter! Don't waste your money! 1THIS TOOL WORKS!!! This tool (not gadget) works. I love it. Virtually no waste of edible pineapple.Easy to use (twist the handle and/or pineapple. No height measurement required (when the tool gets more resistance your done. Remove the spiral cut pineapple by pulling up with the handle. Stack the spiral cut by removing the handle and turning it upside down. Cut the stack and you're done.If you want to eat the core (I do because of its magical vitamins and minerals and good taste), use a long thin pointed knife to cut it at the base and then slice it like a heart of palm.Easy to clean, no soap required. One more unpacking item... There is a small cap covering the core serrated blade. It's held on by invisible tape. It took me a few (grumbling) minutes to discover the tape. Save and use the cap without tape when storing the tool 5buy it. Living in Hawai`i, there is plenty of pineapple around, and I am not a fan of cutting pineapple, however this makes the job more fun. Sure at the Dole plantation the expert slices it in 20 seconds with that curved knife, but I don't have that skill set. So this just works. Sure it slices the pineapple ring too thin and it makes a ton of pineapple juice, and leave a lot of the pineapple behind, but in the end it is easier to cut and core it, so I eat more pineapple. I like the ratchet ability. I wish it cut thicker chunks, as it seems to fray some of the pineapple. Ok, enough whining, this is the best one that I have used, and they all have the same flaws. 5Useless tool. Fibers get stuck and are hard to clean out. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but my pineapple is always getting shredded when i use this device. It may go into a draw never to be seen again. I've watched videos on how to use it and still get mushed and shredded pineapple. Disappointing. 1
