Customer Reviews

Temperature is not accurate; can't boil water Oxo generally makes very good quality products that are accurate and reliable. Although the quality of this kettle appears very good, the accuracy is very poor. I filled the kettle to it's max fill line (1.75 L) and set the temperature to max (212 degrees F, boiling) and waited. The kettle turned off indicating the water was at 212, but the water never boiled. The kettle turned back on and then off several times during its 30 minute cycle to maintain the set temperature, but still no boil. I checked the water in the kettle with a quality digital instant read thermometer (Thermapen MK4) and the water never went above 200 degrees F despite being set to 212 degrees F. The design is flawed. The temperature sensor is too close to the heating element and reads an artificially high temperature. 1Works perfectly and as advertised I m very glad I chose the Oxo electric kettle. I m a tea head and love to brew various types of tea that require different steeping temperatures. I purchased the Oxo because I can dial in the exact temperature I want for my tea s and not be forced to use the preselected temps that come on many of the other electric kettles out there. Or instance I prefer to brew my white teas at 170* Fahrenheit vs the usual preprogrammed 175*. That is just one example of many. Also, many people have complained that the kettle will retain some moisture and not completely dry. I ve found that as long as when I m done using the kettle if I simply keep the lid open for a bit all of the moisture will evaporate out.. com on people it s common sense. Anyway couldn t recommend it more! Cheers! 5Heats water quickly! I really like this kettle. I wish I could give this 4.8 stars but we are only allowed whole numbers. I would have given it 5 stars, except for one small detail. I wish the kettle temperature would start lower than 170 as I like my hot cocoa around 150. But, it does have a digital display so I can catch it at lower temps if I stand and watch it. Luckily, it heats so quickly that I don t have to watch and wait for it to heat to my preferred temp for cocoa. ( I barely had time to finish putting the hot cocoa mix in my cup before it was ready. I only put in just over the minimum amount of water; a full pot takes longer to come to temperature, but is still quick)My previous kettle was unattractive but did the job for some years until lately when it started to slow down and also leak a little when I poured from it. It only had a few pre-sets, but it did have a digital display so I could at least catch it at 150 and pour. I might have bought it again if it weren't so unattractive. I searched to find one that met all my needs, yet none on the market did that. Some were ugly or I just didn't like the design, some had no digital display, some had only 5 or so pre-set temperatures and you couldn't watch as they rose so you could remove it before it got too hot, some got terrible or phony reviews, etc. This kettle met all but one of my requirements; it does allow me to see when it reaches 150 even though I can t set it there, so I bought it. It's attractive on my counter, but best of all, it heats water quickly. It does have condensation on the inside and because it's glass, it shows. However, leaving the top open allows it to dry and the condensation is gone. Overall, I really like this kettle, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to be able to choose their exact temperature, (albeit below 170 you have to watch) and have a kettle that really heats fast. Hopefully, it will last for years without any problems. 4Just what I wanted! Third time s a charm! So, I had to replace my last kettle which is no longer made. First one, no memory. Turns out, I really like that because I have tea every morning at 200 degrees and it is a PIA to have to set the temp each time. So back went the first one. Second one, didn t automatically go into keep warm mode after it reached temp and it beeped so loudly and incessantly (every time you touched it or it did something or perhaps even when it wanted attention) that it woke the household. Super stupid. So, this one has memory. It works, the temp is accurate according to my instant read thermometer, I did not get any off tastes upon initial use ( I did wash it). It goes into keep warm mode without any drama. The beep is modest. It shuts itself off after a specific period of time. The only thing (which I don t mind at all since I top up my teapot every day, but my husband thinks is a PIA) is that when you put it back on the base, it continued in keep warm mode. He d like it to be off and then you have to push the button to have it continue warming. Me, I want hot water! This is my first glass kettle. I can see my iron-heavy water is having an effect with faint stains on the stainless steel bottom. I ve gotten into the habit of a boil of white vinegar once a week, but I have a feeling being able to see the bottom of the kettle in the long term will be both a good (see grossness) and bad (tiresome maintenance) thing. 5The electric kettle to get I've done a lot of research on electric kettles and have returned many, but with this kettle I'm finally able to stop looking. My criteria for an electric kettle is very simple: no plastic touching the water, temperature control, and ability to see the water level. There are many electric kettles on Amazon that meet this criteria but I ended up returning them due to various factors such as poor build quality, weird smell, rust, inaccurate temperature, etc. This electric kettle meets all my criteria and is almost perfect, with almost being the key word. I can't quite give it five stars since there are a few inconveniences, and a five star rating is reserved for products that do their job perfectly. This review is based on my use of this kettle after a day of heavy use and testing. If anything changes such as the temperature reading no longer being accurate, glass breaks, it doesn't stop boiling, etc. I will update this review. But so far I am amazed by this product and relieved that I've finally found an acceptable electric kettle.Anyways, here are the pros and cons with an in-depth explanation for each:Pros:- Great build quality- Sleek design- Simple controls- Accurate temperature- Quiet- Keep warm functionCons:- Small opening- Lip near the top- No insulation- Hard to see water levels------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ProsGreat build qualityWhen I took this kettle out of the box I immediately felt how much better the build quality is compared to the ones I've returned. Of course with this kettle costing $100 it's pretty close to the upper limit of what I'd be willing to spend on an electric kettle, but the extra $30-$50 over similar products of poor build quality is worth it since spilling boiling hot water is one of the last things you'd want.Sleek designPretty self explanatory. Both the kettle and the base look great.Simple controlsThe button turns the kettle on or off, and can be rotated to set the temperature. Other electric kettles have you pressing a button multiple times to increment the temperature in steps of 5-10, or choosing from pre-selected temperatures. This electric kettle lets you select the exact temperature you want without any unnecessary buttons. Additionally, this will remember the temperature you set even after being turned completely off. I always unplug my electric kettles when I'm not using them and it's convenient that this will remember, for example, 190 and I don't have to turn the knob at all if I want that temperature again.Accurate temperatureThis electric kettle not only lets you select the exact temperature you want to boil you water to but actually heats it up to that temperature within a very narrow margin of error. I've tested the displayed temperature versus a thermometer's readings multiple times and they have never been off by more than two degrees. While I'm not going to notice the difference in less than five degrees, the other electric kettles that I've tested would be +/- 10 degrees from the temperature I selected.QuietThis heats up water as fast as other electric kettles I've tried with much less noise. I can barely hear it. Fortunately it beeps once when it's finished heating up the water.Keep warm functionThis electric kettle's keep warm function will turn on after water cools down by as little as one to two degrees. Other electric kettles I've had wait until the temperature drops by as much as 10 degrees before heating it back up.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ConsSmall openingThis makes the kettle difficult to stick my hand in to clean it. I have a very small wrist and can't turn my hand in the kettle. I have to wipe one side, take my hand out, then wipe the other side. As a result I would not heat up anything in this besides water.Lip near the topThe lip on the inside near the top makes it near impossible to get the last few droplets of water out when pouring. Not a big deal; I usually leave the lid open when I'm not using it and it'll evaporate. No insulationIt's a con but I've seen no electric kettle with glass sides that has an insulated side to protect you when there's hot water inside so this doesn't affect the rating.Hard to see water levelsThe water levels are lightly printed in a very small font near the handle so I have to bring my head close to see them. I'm just nitpicking here but eh. 4Water tastes like silicone I really wanted to like this kettle. It works great and is very easy to use. However, I've noticed that the water in the kettle picks up an overwhelming silicone taste after a short amount of time. If I use the water right away, it tastes normal, but if I want to use the Keep Warm function, I end up with silicone flavored tea, which is... not great. I cleaned the kettle when it first arrived, and I've since boiled several batches of water to see if the silicone taste will go away, and so far it has not. I love everything else about this kettle, so I've ordered a replacement and am hoping my issue is just a fluke. As it stands, I'm reluctant to drink any water that's been in this kettle.Update, 2/03/18: I received my replacement kettle, but it was blatantly used and repackaged. It was packaged with the base thrown in the box next to the kettle, with none of the original packaging, and the kettle was covered in smudges and fingerprints. I'm disappointed, to say the least. 1Low profile, modern-looking electric kettle I've gone through a couple of the "OXO On Barista Brain 12 Cup" coffee makers. The family really loved the removable kettle on that model (and it made great coffee). Unfortunately, that model did not prove very reliable and has been discontinued for some time.Given that experience, we hesitated to buy this kettle as it was the water kettle portion that kept failing on the OXO Barista. However, the Barista's kettle was considerably more complicated than this one (it weighed the water in the kettle and gave you options to apportion how much water would be used to brew coffee vs kept in the kettle). We didn't find anything we liked as much as this and gambled on it. It has proven to be more reliable and we like this purchase. What we really like about this is the simplicity of the interface. Tap the button to wake the keittle, twist the dial to select the temperature, and tap the button again to start the heating process. We like that the temperature is selectable in increments of 1 degreee and that it will continue to occasionally reheat the water to maintain that temperature for up to 1/2 hr.Note that there is a slightly cheaper model that does not have an adjustable temperature control (it just straight up boils the water to 212 degrees). Our family appreciates the ability to adjust the temperature to the type of tea.One big caution: the first week or so, there was a noticable plastic tasteto the water (similar to water kept for some time in a Nalgene-type bottle) despite boiling several kettles of a citric acide solution (2 tblsp per kettle) prior to use. However, after a few weeks the taste disappeared. I presume it was from some of the seals in the interior of the kettle. 4Attractive, intuitive, and accurate. Not only is hot, not boiling, water good for making coffee and tea - it's also good for the kettle. I live in an area with seriously hard water, which is really tough on most water kettles. However, since I rarely boil the water, it forms almost no deposits. I've been using it for a few months, using filtered (Brita) tap water, and there is just a faint hint of deposits on the bottom. Kettles that heated to boiling needed deposits removed at least once a month.Single, intuitive control: push the dial, and the display flashes. Rotate left or right to the desired temp, and press again. Two small beeps when water is at correct temp, and it'll hold at that temp for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, there's a single beep and it turns off. It feels solidly constructed, doesn't feel flimsy or cheap. The spout isn't the greatest, but I have no issues pouring without spilling. It's hard to pour all the water out, it seems there's always a little that doesn't come out. However, mine isn't ever empty, so it's not an issue for me. 5the iPhone of gongfu cha I bought this kettle for brewing tea (Japanese, gongfu style etc.) and I love it. The dial really does make the adjusting temperature better, it is effortless and intuitive. This is the ipod of kettles. Making special tea requires some effort, and having a good kettle to learn from makes my life better and more enjoyable (since I do not always have a grandma at the ready to teach me when the bubbles are the right size for brewing my oolong, or the boil in my cast iron pot sounds like the wind moving through pine trees when the water is ready for my matcha). Adjusting the temperature is way easier than with the buttons I used to have on my thermometer, and the kettle remembers what you did last, switches easily between celsius and fahrenheit and holds the temperature for half an hour. Overall it's not noisy and the beeps it makes are subtle: not annoying, I can think of nothing annoying about this kettle at all. I've heard rumours that Costco sells a cheap ($40 CDN or whatever, all metal - if you've ever carried water in a thermos you likely know the metal effects taste - with buttons) kettle that adjusts temperature to the degree as well, but I don't have a membership. I'm really, really glad I splurged. 5Great, user-friendly kettle for avid tea/coffee drinkers. I have been using this kettle for about 2 weeks and so far, I absolutely love it. As an avid tea and coffee drinker now in healthcare professional school, I use it at least twice daily, usually more. I love the quality of OXO products, and was very excited about this kettle in particular because of the variable temperature feature to make different teas at the optimal temperature.Overall, I find this kettle easy to pick up and fill with water d/t the large handle with a soft grip. It has a huge capacity, and I love the fact that there is a temperature guide on the base for whatever kind of tea/coffee you're making. It's also really pretty on my counter. :)I have read some reviews concerning the slow pour and yes - it is slow at first. I don't consider this to be a design flaw, but rather a safety mechanism to ensure that you don't splatter yourself with boiling or near-boiling water. Does it take some getting used to compared to kettles with a faster pour? Absolutely. But as someone with a busy schedule who uses this multiple times per day, I would not say it's a deal breaker.Re: the inability to get every single drop of water from the kettle - this is an issue for every electric and stovetop kettle I've ever used, so I've come to expect it. It's not that much water, and I usually even leave water in my kettle so when I'm a zombie in the morning and every motion I take requires extra effort, I'm one step closer to my life force AKA caffeine. There does appear to be some mineral build-up on the bottom of the kettle already (I use regular ol' tap), but again, I would expect this with any electric kettle I use, considering how often I use them. It might be appearing a bit earlier than other kettles on the market, but I think given the quality and large capacity and features of this machine, it's worth it. 5
