Customer Reviews

Cheap, may work okay, but check it out before you start grinding your blades Defective as arrived (see photo). Of course, this is a low-cost balancer, but a brief examination in the factory would have shown that it was flawed. I initially thought that the out-of-plumb pin wouldn't make a difference in the balancer's operation, but it does. Testing against six mower blades, I found that all were "unbalanced," but the unbalanced end would change if I rotated the base. If you had only one blade and used this as delivered, you could waste a lot of time (and steel) and end up with an unbalanced blade anyway.I plan to try to straighten the pin, but since it's pot metal, I expect it to break. If so, I've found that the center cone is still usable, and accurate, if I put a suitable size, pointed screw, upright in a vise and use that as a pin. 2Be smarter than your neighbor Be smarter than your neighbor who thinks he can do anything with lawn mower repair.Stop sending your mower to a mechanic to sharpen your mower blades. You now have the unit they use, and you can sharpen and balance your mowers blades like the pros, because you now use what the pros use.Simple and very accurate balance of your mower blades.. if you can balance your check book, then you surely canbalance your mowers blades right......then this unit is for you. Be one step ahead of your smart (%%% ed neighbor, and show them up for once and all.Be proud you now can have a sharp mower blade that doesn't rip the top of your grass off, but now cuts nicely by a newly sharpened and balanced blade.Your mower will love you.. because you will no longer have that shimmy or rattle from an unblanced blade.Do yoursef proud...and show Mr. Knowitall you are now a Pro. Now go mow bro! 5Should last a lifetime, wish it was a bit more sensitive. As far as blade balancers go this die cast metal one is well made for the money and should last a lifetime. My basic complaint is the point on the base that fits inside the top cone is a bit too big in diameter. If it tapered down to, say 1/8 inch diameter and then to a point, then the top cone would be free to tilt easier, and it would be more sensitive to smaller changes in weight. Both of the blades I've balanced with this have come out relatively vibration free, but it seems like you could lay quarters on the end of the blade and still not get it to move appreciably.UPDATE: I've taken a file and rounded off the sharp shoulder on the balancing point. (see photo) Now the tip is effectively1/8 inch diameter and it takes less force to tilt off center. Rechecking my balanced blade shows the balance was offslightly, but not as much as I suspected. I took a little more off from the heavy side and got the blade into perfectbalance. Now you can hardly tell the difference between the blade running and blade stopped (declutched). So I'm upgrading it to five stars. In stock form it does a great job, if you want to modify the shoulder and make itmore sensitive, you can do that too. Just rotate and file a little at a time. 5Easy to use So I've been sharpening my own blades for years and yes I have always known you should balance the blades for the sake of the mower and cut and no I have never balanced the blades in any real manor because I always thought it was a cumbersome process. Even this old dog learned a new trick. The money spent was nothing and the results were easily achieved. Are there more accurate methods of balancing a blade...yes but this simple method was plenty good enough! 5Make sure your blade has a round hole Works fine. Honestly, it's only one small step up from a nail in terms of complexity. However, it only works if your blade has a round hole. Some mowers use other shapes. I've seen some Briggs and Stratton blades that have this weird clover looking hole. I don't think this would work for them. Other than that caveat, all good!***My Rating Criteria***Build Quality(47.5%) - 5.0 StarsEfficacy(47.5%) - 4.0 StarsPost-Sale Support(0.0%) - n/aPackaging/Presentation(5.0%) - 5.0 StarsWEIGHTED AVERAGE(100.0%) - 4.5 STARS 5Bent.....is just the beginning. All my local retailers carried the plastic version and I wanted one that would last so I ordered this one. I saw a couple reviews that people had received bent ones so I immediately opened my package....yep severely bent over. (See pic)OK...I can handle a bend, so I did some work with a washer and hammer and got it into shape. Then I try my blades......none of the handy looking steps fit my blades. (Another common complaint in the reviews). With a blade centered to the best my eyeballs can do I notice that the balancer will stay at most positions 10-15 degrees off level after pushing and letting off. So, in effect.....it s NOT balancing because of the friction at the point. Again.....I modified the point to a sharper version and then it works.Bottom line, don t waste your money. After some work I have a balancer that is functional....but doesn t work on my tractor blades without making an adapter which I will do. 1More confidence in balanced lawn-mower blades' balance. I have always sharpened my blades, but never thought about balancing them. It took a little patience to learn how to use it, but found this item very helpful. Setting the blade on the balancer and then tapping it on one side a few different times helped me to recognize how much force to use to cause an out-of-balance blade to indicate and it subtleness. Working with the blade, removing a little metal at a time, the blade was balanced. Reattached to the mower and found it ran smoother and with less effort. It is been so long since I have bought a new blade I could not tell you if the new blades are balanced. I have my suspicions they are not. Sharpening blades twice a season is a habit and now I feel more comfortable with it. Small price to pay for the function. If you are expecting this to work like digital, it doesn't. It is "old school" like before there were push-button phones. It is purely mechanical. 5Not much better than a nail in the wall Poor engineering. The tip of the base is too thick and creates too much surface area that contacts the top. This creates too much friction to accurately assess balance. It does not wobble in all directions freely. I improved the design by sharpening the tip to a more narrow point. Works better, but I don't think this is any better than using a nail in the wall and hanging the blade. Would have expected better from Oregon. 2I wish I had one of these long ago. I wish I had one of these long ago. If you have an expensive lawn mower (riding Exmark, Toro, Gravely etc), you know how expensive spindles are to replace. After a few blade shortenings on the bench grinder or whatever you use, the blades can get out of balance. That WILL eventually damage your machine. For $7 bucks this little tool will tell you when you need to grind a little bit more from the other side so your blades are balanced on that expensive machine. 5Bent Pivot Point makes it useless. I expected more with an Oregon product. It was made in Taiwan out of pot medal. The pivot point was bent so the product is useless. Other reviewers had the same experience. I ordered it anyway thinking someone just got a bad one on a fluke. Wrong!! 1
