Solid clipBought this clip to hold a huge key ring (50+ keys) on my belt for my job, and I've gotta say I'm impressed.I've been using this for a few months now, usually one night a week for three hours of walking, and the paint on the inside of the clip is starting to rub off, but it's doing so in a very controlled manner. It's not chipping off, it's slowly being rubbed down to smooth shiny metal, which is probably the best way one of these things can experience wear and tear (where a cheap clip might just start flaking its paint, or might not even keep its shape- 50+ keys swinging from your hip is a lot to ask for from any little clip). The locks are a nice feature and I can see how others would use them, but I personally don't use them, and find they get in the way more often than not for how I'm using this.Overall, it's a great S-Clip, and feels very sturdy. Certainly a 5-star design and manufacturing job from Nite Ize. 5This is my new keychainI wanted to update my gear and build out a more optimized EDC kit. One of my first tasks was to downsize the big 'ol keychain I had.I bought this S-Biner and attached my keys (on rings) on one side, and my car FOB on the other. This is ideal. I fit all that, plus a doo-hic-key, a tiny flashlight, and a nylon strap (to find it quickly in the bowl of keys we have).I would not have been satisfied with this product if it hadn't been a locking biner. I was worried that it wouldn't stay closed, but it does. Also, the locking mechanism is the opposite from what I expected. The lock is just a piece of plastic that wedges into the BOTTOM of the clip (where it rotates) so that it can't open. It doesn't try to hold it closed, rather it wedges the entire clip closed. That makes a big difference as it's both lightweight and reliable. Also, I was worried about the size of the S-biner. I bought on Amazon, so I couldn't actually hold it first, so wasn't sure how much I could fit. You should buy the S-biner to fit your gear, not the other way around. I'm happy to report that it's exactly the right size for the keys and such that I wanted to add to it. There was even a bit of space left to add the nylon strap when I came across it.Overall, for my purposes, this was the perfect solution. If you're doing something similar, do consider this product. I've not been let down by Nite Ize yet, and will continue to give them the first shot at my problems as long as they continue to deliver quality products like these. 5Good product, but check measurements before buying!Check the measurements before purchasing! Since I got this for my keys, I figured the small #2 would do. When ai got it, I found It is only the size of a house key, making the clasp openings half that size. Thus, it wasn't as easy to use on my belt loop as thought due to the small openings. Returning or exchanging it costs more than the item, so I hope to find another use for it and ordered another one that is bigger (PS- sizes of aluminum vs steel vary, so be alert to that too). I like Nite Ize products and its a good item overall, Im just bummed Im unable to return/exchange for credit toward the bigger one., 4Waste of MoneyI was excited to try this, then disappointed in daily use. The clip looks cool, to be sure, but is not made for any regular use. I used one of these as a key ring and it began to fall apart after only two days. The metal portion that acts as a holder for the keys and moves to open and close is held in place by a rubber stopper, for lack of a better name. The rubber was useless, and the metal warped very fast.Determined to make it work anyhow, I used electrical tape to bind the thing back together. This jury rigging was terrible in its own right, and I gave up entirely after a month. If you are using this in a static location to hang something, it will likely be fine, but for any sort of daily use I cannot recommend it. 2Slide Locks BrokeI ve been using this for exactly a month, to hold my keys and hook them to my belt loop while at work.... three days ago both slide locks broke and fell off. I was irritated because I book this S ring specifically for the locks so my keys would be always secured to the one side and the other side I hook on my belt loop. I kept using it after that, but yesterday I almost lost the key to my storage unit. Thankfully a coworker found it on the floor. I m not particularly rough on the S ring or my keys, I never tug on it and I ve only unlocked the side I use for keys twice. I carry a ring of 4 standard keys, a car key, and very small lightweight mini tool. I guess I will be buying a super tough carabiner with a threaded lock maybe. If you don t care about using the slide locks though, this is a good S ring. It still looks good and isn t scratched up from the keys. 2A product that just plain works.....everytime.I have been using S-Biners from Nite Ize for over a year now and have never had one fail or disappoint, so when this slide lock model came out I had to try it. I primarily use S-Biners for camping, finding that they facilitate the use of ridgelines for tarps, clip-on points for my Clark NX-250 hammock, rope lines, hanging items and clipping items onto my backpack, and for use as my key ring holder. On occasion, I have had my keys separate from a regular S-Biner, but these Slide Locks keep that from happening. They have a snug, positive lock in place feel to them, and it would take a near impossible sequence of events to dislodge and allow the gate to open if not done with intent. Nite Ize is making some good products out of good materials at a fair price. I would expect them to be in business a long, long time with that business model attitude. 5Handy; Locking style is a great feature (and take care to note different size S-Biner's offered - here is a mini-guide to help)These are very handy little carabiner clips. I initially purchased a set of two Size #1 S-Biners as part of several different items I wanted to try out along with several other products in my search for the most suitable combination of rings and clips to organize my keys, and I've since added a selection of these S-Biners for various uses. What I've learned is that Nite Ize produces these S-Biners in various sizes and materials and finishes, each suitable for certain purposes. They're all well made, and in my opinion they are all a good value. I particularly like the locking models that are also available (see the models at the bottom of the listing below). This locking style S-Biner is particularly useful since it reduces the chance that something attached using this clip will become accidentally released, which is something I've had happen when using the non-locking style slip. This particular locking S-Biner is available in two sizes, and I have the #2 which I feel is the most practical size for use on a keychain, for example, but it's also available in the #4 size which is much larger and could be used for carrying larger or heavier quantities of items. After going through a mini research project of my own in order to both determine the relevant dimensions of the various sizes, as well as find the best listings for them on Amazon, here is a guide to simplify this process for others.IMPORTANT NOTES:- I've done my best to determine representative listings here on Amazon for each of these models. Please keep in mind that these are sold by a variety of sellers here, there are multiple listings for the various different sizes and finishes, and the listings are not always well described such that you can be sure that you'll receive the correct size listed.- The prices also vary widely and from my own observations of the various listings here on Amazon, the best prices are usually for the Amazon 'Add-on Item' listings. It is sometimes necessary to take care in going through the choices available on some of the product pages in order to find those listings and prices. The following listings links are the best I have determined on Amazon at the time of posting this review:-- S-Biner, Size #.5, SBHLF-2PK-01: (available in stainless steel or black, 2-packs)Dimensions: 1.31" x 0.48" x 0.22" | 33.41mm x 12.40mm x 5.74mmWeight: 0.11oz | 3.00gWeight Rating: 3 lb.-- S-Biner, Size #1: (available in stainless steel or black, single-packs or 2-packs, part number begins with SB1)Dimensions: 1.56" x 0.62" x 0.21" | 39.67mm x 15.86mm x 5.50mmWeight: 0.14oz | 4.00gWeight Rating: 5 lb.-- S-Biner Size #2: (available in stainless steel or black, single-packs, part number begins with SB2)Dimensions: 1.95" x 0.85" x 0.24" | 49.75mm x 21.71mm x 6.15mmWeight: 0.25oz | 7.00gWeight Rating: 10 lb.-- S-Biner Size #3: (available in stainless steel or black, single-packs, part number begins with SB3)Dimensions: 2.67" x 1.18" x 0.26" | 67.97mm x 30.09mm x 6.83mmWeight: 0.49oz | 14.00gWeight Rating: 25 lb.-- S-Biner, Size #4: (available in stainless steel or black, single-packs, part number begins with SB4)Dimensions: 3.52" x 1.57" x 0.31" | 89.41mm x 39.92mm x 7.94mmWeight: 1.06oz | 30.00gWeight Rating: 75 lb.-- S-Biner, Size #5: (available in stainless steel or black, single-packs, part number begins with SB5)Dimensions: 4.38" x 1.93" x 0.33" | 111.41mm x 49.19mm x 8.45mmWeight: 1.69oz | 48.00gWeight Rating: 100 lb.This Nite Ize S-Biner 3-Pack is also available and includes one each of sizes 2, 3 and 4, in either stainless steel or black. (Part number begins with SB234). This is a better value if you want to get these particular size S-Biner's.There are also a couple of variants to the S-Biner product that incorporate locking features to better secure the two gates and prevent them from accidentally being opened:Nite Ize S-Biner SlideLock (size #2 or size #4) (Part number begins with LSB2 or LSB4 for size 2 or size 4)Nite Ize S-Biner MicroLock (size is between the regular S-Biner size #.5 and #1) (Part number begins with LSBM)Nite Ize also offers the same style product but manufactured in plastic, in sizes 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, in various colors. For example, here is the Nite Ize SBP4-03-01BG black #4 size plastic S-Biner. I can't include listings to more of the plastic models here because Amazon limits the number of links to 10 in any review. The size and weight ratings for the plastic models are comparable to the metal S-Biner's.Nite Ize has a very broad product line of hardware products, and it's helpful to go to their own website in order to get the best descriptions of their products as well as representative MSRP pricing, before making final purchasing decisions here on Amazon. 5Rust-free, light dual locking carabinerThis design is the same as the oher slide lock S Biners. It has the two independent locks.I believe aluminum is a great material for these S biners. I tried the stainless steel and the marine stainless but both showed signs of rusting. Aluminum doesn t rust. While it will still corrode, the corrosion forms a protective layer that prevents futher corrosion. They are noticeably lighter than their steel counterparts.I didn t give 5 stars because the locking mechanism for all three of the S biners in the set were looser than the steel ones. 4More secure than other key clipsBefore purchasing this item, I carried a cheap aluminum D-clip on my keys. Every so many months, these clips would wear out - the spring would snap and the arm would flap uselessly. Recently, I saw an acquaintance carrying around a Nite Ize S-Biner on his keys. Reviews on the product were mixed - the design was well liked but the product suffered from one serious flaw: the gates opened too easily. Nite Ize clearly released this model to address that issue. The construction quality, compared to my previous cheap D-clips, is very good. The S-body feels strong; it doesn't feel like it will easily break (unlike the D-clips). The latch opens and closes smoothly and is well designed. The spring action is generated by the arm's insertion onto the body - there are no additional parts to fail/wear out.The locking mechanism works by moving a plastic slider, attached to the arm, into a notch in the S-body near the hinge. Sliding this lock in and out of the notch produces a satisfying tactile click which informs that the lock has been engaged/disengaged. This design allows me to open the S-biner easily - using my thumb, I can unlock and open the gate in one smooth push. The converse, while not as easy as opening, is still manageable with one hand; I simply pinch the slider b/w my thumb and index finger and pull. It took some practice, however, and I initially needed 2 hands to lock it.The black plastic slider moves easily and smoothly along the length of the arm. The piece, fortunately, doesn't move on its own - in other words, if I disengaged it from the notch and shook the device, the black plastic wouldn't move along the arm. When the slider is in the locked position, the lip further prevents it from opening unintentionally. While it isn't impossible for the locking mechanism to be disengaged accidentally, it seems very unlikely given the necessary force and the slim profile of the plastic slider. Furthermore, the black plastic slider isn't able to slide off the end of the arm - Nit Ize has designed a small lip on the inside of the plastic which prevents this.In sum, this is a well designed mechanism - it is sturdy and secure. I feel confident that it will secure my keys throughout my day-to-day activities. I would recommend this product. 4DO NOT RECOMMENDThe S-shape prevents you from holding larger objects that a traditional carabiner. The flat shape fit well on my belt loop and in my pocket. I would NOT recommend using these for keys though. I used this item for a week to attach my car keys (4 keys + 1 fob) and I had 2 failures. The aluminum construction is robust, but the spring action is weak and the tiny plastic clips must be engaged for this 'biner to work and retain your stuff. The plastic clip goes further to prevent the clip from fully closing if it's not engaged into the locking mechanism. My recommendation: only use this on fixed installations where nothing is moving and you can keep the clip locked. 2
