    People don't really get what these are for The best way to get truly sharp blades is by using a progressive system of harder and harder stones. But there comes a point where its more effective to create a surface of that hardness, not a solid stone....hence the strops and various STROPPING COMPOUNDS.Wicked Edge makes the best ones.....to a ridiculous degree, where you can't even use leather anymore to hold the compound which is instead sprayed on to a fine brush designed for the purpose.Your typical Lansky system, you may or may not start out with a with an extra course (70 grit), or course (120 grit) diamond stone and then a medium (280 grit) diamond stone or a soft Arkansas stone (300 grit). Creating a new edge or a new edge angle, it's best to use all three, in my opinion. An already sharpened blade, however, you will be working backwards, although that is not always a bad thing if you can't get the original edge angle correct, simply make a new one. The end result will be better.From there, use a fine (600 grit) diamond stone. Then a hard Arkansas (650) grit. An ultra fine diamnond stone (100 grit) and black hard Arkansas (1200 grit). By now your blade will be razor sharp and have a nice polish. And now your sharpening media is probably measured in microns instead of grit. 1200 grit is 15 microns.Here is where you want two of these strops and a pair of Wicked Edge Stropping compounds in 14 microns and 10 microns. To give it a nice, ludicrously sharp edge and then finish off with a fine sapphire hone. The sapphire hone is just under 10 micron but it is a lot of work going from 1000/1200 grit to 2000 grit (10 micron). Which is why you want the strops and the compounds. The result is about as sharp as can be reasonably expected in most knives.In case you are not a reasonable person, you could also get 4 more of these leather strops and two more pairs of stropping compounds. These come in 5 micron/3.5 micron and 1 micron/0.5 micron.More than this and the compounds are spray on and go down to .025 microns. Why? Why not. Only the hardest steel or ceramic will hold that fine an edge. Way, way sharper then you would use for a straight razor. Maybe a specialized blade for taking slices for microscope samples. Blade sharpening has grown into a cult thing in recent years, in no small part due to the Lansky system itself. 5So amazing I had to buy 3 I use these with my Lansky system. I have 3 of these strops and I use 3 separate compounds. Each strop is only used with a specific compound. You can find the polishing compounds on Amazon. Finishing off the sharpening job with 3 strops and progressing through your compounds really puts your knife edge over the top. I have paid for professional sharpening that isn't even close to as sharp as I can get knives with the 5 stone lansky system and finishing up with 3 strops. I highly recommend this strop (or three of them). 5Very difficult to use It's almost impossible to strope the kitchen knife with this setup. The stones work great in both directions but the leather can only be used in one direction making it cumbersome to use. Going back to the "barbers leather strap". Stick to the stones! They work great. 2DO NOT BUY. DDD- Very Disapponited in LANSKY i hav a few of theiur products and they usually make QUALITY products, this one is not it looks like a scrap piece of leather glued to a poor quality piece of plastic it isnt even by anymeans the extra glue makes it wavy and bumpy. save your money. the whole system has a cheap quality feel to it. good idea, but the parts need to be better quality and better QC and a few other tweaks and this would be a great system. 1Read the Directions! Carefully read the instructions on this product because usage of it is the exact opposite as a regular stone sharpening stone.A leather polisher (stroper) goes backwards, otherwise you'll cut into the leather.Trust me on this, I rushed into trying to polish my blade and cut the leather so use caution.Remember: the last step in sharpening a knife is polishing the sharpened blade with a stropping leather strap. 5First time Lansky has disappointed me!! First let me say I m a big fan of the Lansky sharpening system and have excellent results using it. I decided to add a few leather strops to my set-up to use with different grit polishing compounds. I was a bit shocked at the price tag of a single Lansky leather strop (you can get larger strops mounted to boards that are 5x the size for the same price or less). I can deal with the cost but when they arrived ,promptly as usual with Amazon Prime, I opened them to find that they do not come with the pole that feeds into the slot for the various sharpening degrees!! Three leather strops cost me as much as the set that included 5 stones with poles, stand, storage case and honing oil!! It s absolutely absurd for Lansky not to include a piece of metal that costs pennies when it s essential to using the item! It s bad enough that you ll have to bend the poles included in the set to get them flat (instructions actually state this) but having to be further inconvenienced having to remove a pole from another stone for each change of strop?!! Come on Lansky, you re better then this! 4easy stropping. Used in conjunction with the lansky deluxe kit. Mirror polish even without the compound. Guess the compound is coming in from China by way of dingy, haven't received it yet. Been just using the bare leather and it perfect. Serious mirror edge when used with the deluxe kit. Much better than my old leather belt. 5Got a nice mirror finish on one of my blades that has ... It does what its supposed to do! Got a nice mirror finish on one of my blades that has been super dull for years. For the price of this strop, with a little jewelers rouge I was able to get it shining bright again! Definitely recommend for anyone looking to brighten their edge with this kit. 5Wouldn't Buy Another One... It's okay, but I wouldn't buy it again. First off, trying to use it the same way you use conventional Lansky hones is very time consuming and not very effective. If you make the mistake of pushing it back toward the edge you are sharpening it will cut the leather with ease. I found that if you are sharpening a blade to a 25 degree angle and stay at that angle with strop it has virtually no effect. If you use the guided and rod I found that going to 30 degrees helped. But what really works is to simply removed the guide rod, flip this over on it's back, charge it with jeweler's rouge and strop manually. If I had it to do over again, I would not buy it. I would (and will) make a leather strop on a wooden base so I won't have the limited size of this strop and a more stable platform. 3This seems well crafted and sturdy and so far no issues I bought this for polishing/stropping my straight razor between uses. I would say that it keeps my razor better-honed that a traditional strop. Just make sure to keep your angle & movement consistent. The only thing I cannot comment on is longevity as I have not used it for a long period of time yet. This seems well crafted and sturdy and so far no issues. If I have any issues with longevity I will update this review. I am impressed. I use the Lansky sharpeners on all my knives and am not disappointed yet. 5
