I like the feel of it in my hand
I like the feel of it in my hand. I use one side for concave blades (I wore the corners down with use) and the other side for flat or convex blades.Don't make the mistake I made and get oil on it. I had to buy a second one.I use it dry, but I suppose you could probably use water, just don't use oil or it will be ruined.
5Four Stars
A little coarser than I expected but works well touching up my sickle in the field
4Very Useful for Sharpening
I bought this item to help me sharpen my lawn equipment instead of a file. Shovels, machetes, lawn mower blades, axes and the like. It didn't disappoint. It's a very coarse stone, so if you want a razor sharp edge on your stuff, you would need to get a separate finishing stone (obviously). Be careful if you do, because the sharper the edge, the easier it will chip if it isn't made out of top-quality steel. It is also fairly long, about 10", a little over 2" wide at the middle, and about .5" thick. It fits fairly well in my hand (between Men's size M and L). In my opinion, it's too bulky and heavy to take backpacking or camping, since a smaller stone will do the trick in almost all cases. This is especially useful when sharpening things with very long edges; like machetes and lawn mower blades, and as such, is a great tool to have in the garage. This tool has been very helpful with sharpening my lawn tools. I don't have to keep running small stones (sized for knife-sharpening) over the blades and I don't risk shortening the life of the blades by taking off tons of metal like with a file.Bits of metal will get stuck in the pores, as with other stones. I found the easiest way to combat that is to completely submerse the stone in a pitcher of water after each time you run over the blade. It'll probably end getting your pants soaked if you aren't careful, but better water than oil.
5Great size and shape file but wears away quickly.
Sharpener is of a decent grit, and is well shaped, but it seems to be wearing away very quickly. I did a decent bit of work on a cold steel shovel edge and the flat edge of the file already has a concave arch worn into the area I was filing with. I do not see where this would last a very long time with heavy use. I do like the shape as it is well thought out and the size is such that you can get good control of it while sharpening. I just cant see this thing lasting a long time with the amount of wear it sustained with one use. Bit at least I bought it pretty cheap. I paid 7.95 and would buy it again, but not if it went any higher than that as it doesn't seem to hold up long.
3Larger than expected, but it does a decent job
This sharpener is almost a foot long, so it was larger than I had expected. I was able to grind out a couple of smaller nicks in my lawnmower blade in a matter of minutes; and it did a pretty decent job of restoring the edge for the entire blade. So far so good, I'm pleased with the purchase.
4It's HUGE!
The description is not accurate. What a waste of time! It is NOT 1 x 2 x 2 as the description states .. it's 9 1/2 x 1/2 x 1 1/2! If the seller would show the photo of the tool sharpener with the shovel (the actual packaging) ... or something to scale ... customers would guess it's not as small as 1 x 2 x 2 like the description states.
1Glad I Found It -- Serves All My Sharpening Needs
Small enough to sharpen hand pruners and large enough to handle riding lawnmower blades, I have also used it to keep my machetes sharp and even to smooth the blade on a dinged up shovel. The unique size and shape of this Lansky sharpener allows it to be used on several types of cutting tools, from small to large. Long enough to grip easily and rough enough to help you maintain that grip, this is the one sharpener I keep in my pocket when venturing into the Southwest Florida wetlands to keep my machetes and hatchets sharp when cutting down Brazilian Pepper trees.
5Larger sharpening stone that allows two-handed use to put edge back on lawnmower blades
Used for re-sharpening lawnmower blades. Surprised how blunt these get after just one season. Doesn t address the nicks from stones, twigs, etc, though will really help get a clean cut in the spring time.
4... off after the first use and then was a nice smooth even surface
The stone came with a very gritty surface coating that rubbed off after the first use and then was a nice smooth even surface. I was disappointed that it is not a 2 sided sharpener as I was told it was. Maybe they do make a 2 sided one (2 different grit surfaces) but this one does a good job on my large kukri machete and my hand axe. I will try it on my BK 9 when I am back in the wilderness again. One could also sharpen pocketknives on it by setting it on a log or a table with some rubber sheeting under it.
4Nice little general-purpose Stone
This is a nice little stone. Finer than I thought it would be I was expecting it to be a bit more corse this will bring back the edge on my SOG "throwing hatchets" which were like razors when new. It will not give you any edge you can shave with but it's very close. It would be better kept in a case it is thin hard stone.. I dropped one from waist-height accidentally over concrete and then I had three stones. At its price point though I didn't even cry I just ordered another one..
