Customer Reviews

Fatally flawed designWhen I took a gamble on this my primary concern was that it would be too wobbly or "sag," this did not occur. But the design is fatally flawed in other ways. What you will notice first is that there is a HUGE hinge right where your knees go (picture 1) and after four of five excruciating whacks I have given up. This alone is enough reason to return it.Bizarrely there is no thumb screw to adjust the mouse tray, you have to use a wrench. There is a thumb screw to slide the tray left-or-right but not to adjust the tilt. (picture 2)In addition, a huge and very sharp screw protrudes from the left side (picture 3.)And, to add insult to injury I'm expected to pay return shipping.Stay away.(Also, the company issues VERY creepy emails. Amazon REALLY needs to crack down on marketplace seller email it's getting annoying.) 1Great quality keyboard tray for DIY hackers.I chose this product after seeing the Question & Answers section had a company rep saying it would be possible to cut this product to fit. I only had 12" of space under my desk (an Autonomous.ai standing desk), but the under-rails of all of these trays are 17". I cut the rail to 12", drilled and tapped new holes for the bumpers, and the whole thing installed like a charm. As a result of my modifications, the tray does not completely disappear under the desk, but I would not expect it to after lopping off five inches of rail. Fortunately you can rotate the tray, by rotating it 90 degrees it hides away under the desk when that is necessary, which is not often.Beyond the simplicity of the modification, the product feels good and sturdy to me, at least the keyboard tray portion. I find it easy to adjust, although I do not often have to do so. I do not find any part of this mechanism to be loose or poorly designed as mention in other reviews. This part of the product feels very solidly designed.I will end with the issues I've had. The mouse tray is raised, and can be adjusted. I do not like the raised mousepad. Uncaged Ergonomics has said they will be sending out new hardware to flat-mount the mousepad in-line with the keyboard tray, that will be a huge improvement. I would rate this a 5 star if it came like that out of the box.Given that I don't care about the raised mousepad, it doesn't bother me that it gets loose and rattles around. I think this is a minor design flaw with the hand-tightened screw that holds the mousepad in place. In any case, this could be an issue for you.Another problem I had was on the left side of the tray, the bolt for the adjustment tightener was longer than it needed to be by about an inch. It jutted into my leg and was extremely distracting. I took a hacksaw and a metal file to it, and now it is great! But keep in mind if you like your keyboard tray almost in your lap as do I, this will be an issue.Final issue: the sticky rubber pads. I really like that these keep the keyboard stuck in position. The downside is that they come pre-installed, and they happen to be right where my wrists rest. After two months I have already almost worn these down to the wood. Again, I can just cut them back to a length that works for me, but it is another modification that needs to be done.All-in-all, this is a great keyboard tray for the price. If you are a hacker and don't mind voiding the warranty, it can be made to fit your desk setup. I have found that anything I've needed to adjust, I've been able to fix with minimal effort. However if you are intimidated by "DIY" projects, then this might not be the right tray.I will update this review once I get the flush-mount mouse tray hardware. I can't wait! :)Photo Notes: In the photos, you can see the original length of the rail; the cut length; the holes I drilled and tapped for the bumpers & screws; the under-desk installation; the maximum extension; and the maximum retraction ("hiding" the tray under the desk). The photos are all out-of-order, sorry about that. 4Flimsy & Cheap - Stay Away!I was impressed by the look of this item based on its photos. When I received the item the wooden surfaces were scratched and discolored but I wasn't too concerned with that since there would be a keyboard on top of them. The keyboard part mounts to the arm at the center only which leads to massive wobble, its even worse when the mouse tray is attached since it is not balanced. If the metal bracket was the width of the keyboard mount and attached at the sides then it would be much sturdier. The tray doesn't slide very well either. It appears it is a metal on metal slide which is terrible. Even after adding some lubricant it was still jittery and difficult to move. There is also a lot of left to right play, even with the adjustment knob tightened. Do not waste your time or money on this thing. I returned it and ordering the 3M Knob Adjust Keyboard Tray, Standard Platform with Antimicrobial Gel Wrist Rest and Precise Mouse Pad, 17-inch Track, Black (AKT60LE) 1Would not buy again. Please read!I almost never write reviews. However, I feel this is important. First, let me say the customer service of this company exceeds EXCELLENT! However, the product is terrible!! First is that while you can lock in place the slide out and tilt of the tray, there is no way to lock in the swivel, and it moves VERY, very easily. I am a transcriptionist and I don't want my tray moving side to side while I type. Also, after putting the tray on, it is so UNSIGHTLY with the holes on each side. If you do not use the mouse tray, which for me is way too far out to use, or even if you do, the holes on each side are very large and very unsightly. I believe they could manufacture plastic or rubber caps that would fit into the holes and make a much nicer looker tray. Now some of you men, or perhaps women, might not care about this, but after spending several hundred dollars on a very nice desk, this tray is simply very ugly. It is bulky, the movement is not smooth at all, the lock is not steadfast. It really is a very poorly thought out and cheap product. Had I realized these flaws, I would have went with a different product. However, once all the holes are made in the desk, it is a large project to remove everything and send it back. Though, as of today, I did take the whole darn thing down and returned it! So, please think about this and perhaps review others before buying. 1Successful Installation under the drawer of a Steelcase deskI purchased this because I thought it was the best option to install on my Steelcase desk and still be able to maintain my drawer. Because it swivels up-and-down it worked! I type a lot and definitely need the ergonomic placement and was worried that my ergonomic keyboard would not fit on it but it does. I was also concerned that the mechanism underneath would but my knees too much but it doesn't .Here are some pictures to show you the end result of the installation. Notice he screws protruding bit intro the drawer which we will grind off. If you don't have access to a grinder, alternatively you could just put some things squishy around each one, maybe a dollop of hot glue or something similar to keep you from scratching yourself? (Or shorter screws, ha ha)I know I rely heavily on customer feedback before making purchases so I hope you find it helpful! 4Be very very very careful mounting the mouse tray to the keyboard tray. The directions say to connect the mouse tray to the keyboard tray using 2 screws and two nuts.Wrong.The adjustment mechanism for the mouse tray is threaded - very badly - and the screws are not beveled properly. You must take GREAT CARE to not cross-thread the screws, and they really want to cross-thread.I would have re-tapped the holes in the mouse tray adjustment mechanism if I had that size tap. I would have used my own screws if I had that size screw. Alas. Just be careful. Very careful. When a screw starts to wander, stop, back it out, begin again. This product could easily have gotten 4 stars from me were it not for these shoddy screws. The vendor must hate these crews too, because they give you some extras, and matching washers that serve no purpose. Uncaged Ergonomics could easily put themselves out of business, selling this for $87 and providing screws that are worth paying me $85 to use. Really, I almost gave this two stars, it's that bad. Also, Phillips screws? In the 21st century?? Torx and a bit are what you provide with an $87 keyboard tray. They can't be stripped as easily.Other than that, this is easy to assemble and install. The platforms for mouse and keyboard are strong without being bulky or obtrusive. I mounted the mouse tray on the left without any problems aside from those miserable cheap screws. The usability is excellent. The only adjustment not available is lateral pitch which wouldn't be useful. The mouse tray is separately adjustable from the keyboard tray, both in forward-back angle and separation from the keyboard platform. The pair are adjustable in height and yaw, and can be slid completely beneath the desk surface. I set the back of the mounting plate 18 inches back from the edge of the desk: perfect. You'll want to test and measure your configuration.A decent quality mouse pad is provided for the mouse tray, and the keyboard is retained by friction via two sponge rubber strips. This mechanism comes with no wrist rests or pads, so consider the expense of those when purchasing. 3Works fine. Mine had an assembly issue that shouldn't have happened, but works fine once corrected. For a low-priced keyboard and mouse riser, the piece functions very well. I've added a binder clip on the mouse pad side to thread the mouse cord through, as it tends to get caught otherwise. The actual function of the riser is what earns the 4-star review. The vertical range is impressive, and it does lift to slightly above desk height. My biggest complaint is the state that the mount came in. Two of the control arms were not properly assembled upon shipment, just dangling loose connected at only one point each. I had to disassemble the forward support rod to attach the arms, otherwise the unit would not work at all, and it was apparent from the difficulty of doing this that it was NOT an intended part of the install process. But I was able to figure it out. When I purchased the riser, I saw no mention of others having this issue, so it appears that this was a one-off mistake on the assembly line, but judging from the issues that I had, if you receive your riser with two dangling arms only attached in one place - do yourself a favor and RMA the thing instead of trying to fix the problem yourself. The rest of the install was on the difficult side, but not anything that I minded. Others may feel differently. 4Does the job for the price, but prepare for banged kneesFitting it was a challenge because of my desk but we rigged up a bracket to attach to the cross slats that meant it could affix directly to a flat surface. It's stable and slides out without too much fuss. I don't have much problem with adjusting it to how I need.My reason for giving it a lower rating was:1. like other reviewers have said, the bracket underneath is large and I constantly bang my knees on it (and my legs are pretty short so I thought I would be okay).2. The mouse tray doesn't go up as high as it looks in the photos. I wanted it to move higher and slightly over the keyboard, but that isn't possible with this set up.For the price though I think it's the best out there. One day I'll splurge on the $300 keyboard trays, but this one will do for now. 3Has potential, but left me disappointedI wish I could like this keyboard tray. It's made from good materials, but suffers from fit and finish issues: Nice nylon sliders that work reasonably smoothly, but they're not fitted right so the tray has sloppy side-to-side motion. This isn't a killer issue; when you're tying it's reasonably stable. During installation I had to enlarge the size of the mount holes to accept the correct screw, and the holes to the front of the tray really should be moved backward and out of the way of the stabilizing bar underneath; it's more challenging to get the nut to thread on the screw than it should be. There's two high quality rubber strips applied across the tray, about 2" wide and 1/16" thick. This might be lovely if you have a large keyboard that's completely covering the tray, but mine is small and my wrists are hitting this stuff, it's totally in my way and very difficult to remove. It would be MUCH better if they included this for the end user to apply if they wanted it. The mouse pad tray has an adjustable angle, and the fastener isn't a quick-release as on the keyboard angle (it definitely should be a quick release this is a significant oversight). What is supplied is a screw with a hex head, and that size hex hex wrench isn't supplied. I'm mentioning this because there's another set of screws with a smaller hex head and a wrench is supplied. But the real issue I've got is that the mouse tray is elevated from the keyboard tray by about 1.5 inches. No mater how you tilt it, there's no way to get it to be flush with the keyboard tray. That's not explained anywhere and isn't visually obvious in the photos you can see it tilt, but I was certainly assuming you could have it not tilt and it would flush with the tray. Not the case. I called the customer service line (they're competent and nice) and the CSR explained that they're going to have a fix out for this in a few months, but right now there's nothing available.I'm going to have to return this, which is really disappointing. I thought I'd found a reasonably priced keyboard tray; looks like I'm going to have to spring for one that's twice what this costs. That said, this may be perfect for you. I'd keep it if the mouse tray was able to flush with the main tray; I was able to resolve all the other issues I pointed out. 2I really like this keyboard trayI really like this keyboard tray. I purchased it due to the materials of construction, other similarly priced "ergo keyboard trays" are constructed with fairly flimsy looking plastic trays. It's well built, and very solid when installed. I have noticed a little rocking sensation side to side if you're not careful with how you lock it down (make sure the sides are balanced when you lock it in place or it will have some side to side rock in it).The only thing I think could be added, is one additional rotational articulation under the keyboard pad itself. So that if you would like to bring the keyboard off center for any reason, you could unlock the two rotational articulators, turn into position and relock so that when rotated to an angle the keyboard still maintains proper orientation towards the user. See the third attached photo. If there were a second rotating articulating disk under this keyboard tray it could be turned off center then pointed towards the chair instead of being at an angle as shown below. 4
