Kitchen Aid here I come I am so stocked! My kitchen Aid attachments have arrived. I read the "instructions" and found that I can wash most of the parts in the dishwasher (that's a plus for me). Washed everything and made my very first batch of low-fat, low sodium, no sugar added sausage! Putting the parts together was a snap. And, taking the parts apart for cleaning was a super breeze. Of course, the only downside, if your looking to try out making your own sausages, would be needing a kitchen aid mixer plus attachments. The original start up cost is a bit pricey but so very worth it. I'll be saving up so I can purchase the ice cream maker and pasta makers. 5meat grinder KitchenAid FPPA Mixer Attachment Pack for Stand Mixers I used the meat grinder last week . I only ground 2 or 3 lbs. of meat and toward the last part of grinding ,I noticed what looked like dirty grease coming from around the center shaft. So I called the Kitchenaid helpline and was told this happens on occason but the grease was f.d.a. approved safe!? now Itried to tell the first person I was talking to that I had never heard of aproved dirty looking grease!! So i was then told that Kitchenaid only used approved products in any of thier appliances, and as the first person I was talking to was trying to convince me this was acceptible we were disconected. So I called back and was told by the next service rep. that this happens once in a while but it is'nt a regular thing only it is still safe. So we decided to give the meat grinder another chance as this was the first time it had been used; Alright I can go along with this as she also said that if I was still unhappy with this item I could get it replaced. So I stand by my first review on the stand mixer when I said Kitchenaid had very good customer relations. I will try to follow up as I learn more about the meat grinder. As I stated before the slicer does what you would expect for the price, I still have not tried the fruit and veg. strainer yet. Will let you know how that works out and the final outcome on the meat grinder. 3Good attachments. My wife likes it so far. It's made fairly well, with at least some metal parts. Its a lot more cost effective than buying a Squeezo or other food processor if you already have the Kitchenaid. The pinion gear went out on our mixer (the flour power one) but I think that the gear is made to be a weak point to protect the rest of the machine. I ordered the part and replaced it quite easily. Should be good for another 5-7 or so years....She has used the screw and sieve attachment the most for making applesauce and tomato products, but also likes the shredder for cabbage. We've even lent this set out to two or three of our friends, and they liked it too. 4Solid performer for the right jobs Having had this for many months now I can say that I'm glad I have the product. I do find various parts more useful than others and there are some things I thought it'd do that it struggles with...Grinder: Excellent. A little difficult to clean a couple of the nooks and crannies though so make sure you keep an eye out for this.Rotary chopper: Mixed feelings. The drums can be difficult to change and I now keep a small spanner in the box with them. In operation it can work very well AS LONG AS the food being chopped is firm and crisp (carrots, potatoes etc). I find that a poor job is done on onions and other similar or softer foods. If it cuts a particular food well you will fill buckets in minutes, if your first try results in crushed, torn pulp stop right there. I tend to shy away from this device a bit now in case it doesn't do the job well which is unfortunate.Strainer: Very Good. I've only used this a few times but I was very impressed with what it can do. If nothing else it was impressive to watch ;) Some parts are a bit hard to get at to clean though. 4Even though the grater has a course and fine and attachment the course attachment is a lot finer ... This set-up is the bomb! within the first week of getting it I used the grater to make homemade coleslaw, the grinder to make homemade relish, and the food strainer to make homemade tomato sauce. Works exactly how it says and the quality is top notch. Not all pieces are dishwasher safe so please be sure to read the manual before tossing all of the pieces in there. Saves a ton of time compared to trying to chop and strain veggies by hand. Even though the grater has a course and fine and attachment the course attachment is a lot finer than I expected, it gives the same consistency as a supermarket quality grated product. 5Don't buy this THIS IS TERRIBLE. QUALITY CONTROL LET KITCHEN AID DOWN.The cutter cones are simply stamped, pressed and grinded hit and miss. The result is cutter cones that are dull and do not cut vegetables properly. One cannot make proper grated carrot or potatoes with these. The meat grinder works fine. 1First try was defective So we ordered this slice/shredder and promptly put it to use when it arrived. It 'technically' works but once you use it for a few minutes it is IMPOSSIBLE to get back off the mixer. It would appear that the shaft and bearings that are inside the housing are not aligned to the rest of the device. After 3 uses with just some cheese and peppers, onions, when I pulled it off the machine there was grease just everywhere. After much pulling and banging on it just to get it to release from the mixer, it FINALLY let go. It's quite apparent at this point that the bearings inside the brass shaft are destroyed and is probably a result of the bad alignment to the PTO on the mixer. I have already submitted a return request for this one and ordered a replacement on Amazon so we shall see how the next one goes. My mother has this setup that is about 50 years old but has a different drive unit.... It may very well be an old Hobart or whoever owned them 50 years ago but she has never had a single issue with hers. I'm hoping that my replacement will work better. If not then I'll be returning it as well and going to Ebay to find one of the 50 year old all-metal sets that seem to never die. 3love it I bought this for help with home canning. This turned out to be one of the best purchases I have made in a while. My only complaint (almost cost it a star) is that the hopper is far too small. It takes good aim and makes some mess trying to get the food where it is supposed to go. Using a ladle helps. (I will probably get the larger hopper attachment when I feel like spending more money.) I made gads of applesauce and spaghetti sauce with the FVS attachment this year. It sped up what had been the worst part of the process so much that I canned far more than I had planned to! I also got an extra quart of spaghetti sauce with the same recipe I had been making with my food mill. The shredder was awesome. It consumed a zucchini in seconds. This was great for all that zucchini I never know what to do with. It wasn't long until I found myself staring at a mountain of shredded zucchini and my smiles slowly evaporated as I realized I now had to do something with it. Zucchini bread. Zucchini relish... 5Slicer/Shredder not worth a dime I bought the FPPA Mixer Attachment Pack. I was surprised to see how inadequate the slicer/shredder attachments are. The chute does not accommodate many food items for slicing (like carrots). When I placed a carrot in the chute, I didn't get the circular slices one would typically want for carrots, I got semi-lengthwise slices. On top of that, pieces of carrot were getting caught between the shroud and the slicer and making it impossible to slice more than a few slices. Get a food processor, not this thing!I didn't even try out the fruit/vegetable strainer, since I already have a juicer. However, looking at it made me think that the juicer would do a much better job.I would have kept the grinder, since it does a good job. But the other two seem worthless to me.About KitchenAid customer service:Since I didn't like the slicer/shredder, I contacted KitchenAid to see about getting a refund. I told the person that I bought the pack through Amazon. She told me to send the pack in to KitchenAid for a full refund. She even sent me a shipping label by email. A few weeks later, I called KitchenAid to see why I hadn't received the refund yet. They told me that they would not be able to refund the money because I bought the pack from Amazon! KitchenAid seems to make good stuff (other than the slicer/shredder) but they flat out lied to me on the phone - and they wouldn't make it right. For that reason alone, I'll never buy another KitchenAid product again. They seem to care more about their $119.26 than they do about their name (and their customers). 1The shredder works great for cheeses(the finer one for parmesan & the coarser ... My husband purchased these in 2000 to go with my KitchenAid mixer-I'm one of those gals who loves getting appliances for gifts! I use the food grinder & slicer/shredder at least once a week. I slice cucumbers, potatoes to make scalloped potatoes with cheese, & apples for pies. The shredder works great for cheeses(the finer one for parmesan & the coarser for cheddar), as well as cabbage & carrots for coleslaw & salads & poatoes for hash browns. I use the grinder for bread crumbs & meats. The grinder works well for smaller projects but since my husband is a hunter we also have a bigger one with a stronger motor to grind up all the deer meat. I'm afraid it would burn out the motor in my mixer to use for so much meat. It's been 16 years & they still work well but the plastic part that surrounds the metal shaft (which is how it attaches to the mixer) is beginning to split. I'd say they're well built to hold up for 16 years with a lot of use. I'd highly recommend these attachments. I can't review the fruit/vegetable strainer because I've never used it. 5
