Customer Reviews

Experienced maker, hacker, builder wishes he'd bought this sooner My only regret is not buying this sooner. I've been a lifelong builder and hacker; R/C cars, planes, helicopters, arduino robots, raspberry pi arcade cabinets, etc. I'm really good with needle nose pliers because that's all I've used for decades. I can (usually) get just the right diagonal grip to do complex crimps and work my around a connector to pinch the wings around wire and insulation alike. Yea, the end result wasn't always the prettiest but it (usually) worked even though it took a while. THEN I found this crimping tool. This tool has changed my life. The crimping is so much faster now. This tool is very intuitive and well designed. You can see in the pictures there are three crimping channels for various sized connectors and wire gauges. What you might not see are the two 'zones' within each channel: There's a tighter zone for the wire-crimping wings and a slightly wider zone for the wings that crimp a wire's insulation. This allows the user to slide a connector into the channel, 'hook' the wider wings in just the right spot, then ratchet down 2-3 clicks to hold the connector in place without crimping yet. Then the user can slide the wire into the connector until bumping the insulation against the tighter zone for exact alignment. Finally, squeeze down the remaining ratchets and a perfect crimp is made. Looks like it came straight from a factory. The process is straightforward to execute and achieves the same results every time. The tool feels solid, sturdy and well made. 5Well made, works great for longer pins, but NOT for JST-XH pins A very well made crimp tool, however it is NOT for use with JST-XH pins which is the main reason I ordered it. When it refers to JST pins it means older series with longer crimp barrels. The tool jaw is about 7mm thick, divided into two 3.5mm thick steps. The idea is the narrower step crimps the bare wire securely, and the wider step crimps the insulation. However the JST-XH pins only have a maximum crimp length of 2.5mm for the bare wire, so this tool with either crush the mating area, or crush the insulation. The tool does work very well for "Dupont" pins like you would use to mate with a conventional 0.1" center header with 0.25" sq posts. 5Awesome tool - but not intuitive to use Before purchasing this tool - I had never in my life ever used one. It is not super obvious, with 3 holes x 2 sides (left / right) x 2 orientations (up/down). I did find a useful video on youtube c-pTsccCizAThis is not a tool I will use often. But when it is needed, it is great! After I first learned how to use it, several months went by before I needed it again. By that time I had completely forgotten the orientation! So I wrote a tiny "U" on the side - not only indicating "this side up" as I hold it but also the orientation of the new pin when inserted: the end crimp on the wire side has the open side up, also in the same shape and orientation of the "U". And for me - I will primarily used the dupont 2.54 spacing for jumper wires like those in Hilitchi 515 Pcs 40 Pin 2.54mm Pitch Single Row Pin Headers, Dupont Connector Housing Female, Dupont Male/Female Pin Connector Kit (so I put a dot on the appropriate hole to remind myself which one to use).As for the quality - it is awesome! When properly used, it makes very neat and tidy crimps. 5Solid but not finished well! Really solid tool but its slightly too wide for the smallest Dupont pins, and my fingers kept loosing skin from having to hold the pins too close to the sharp edges.Well it works perfectly now!I attacked it with my Dremel and a fine tapered grinding wheel. Its not so wide anymore and all the edges are slightly radiused/broken so no more pinching. All this work cost one rating point. 4The old adage is true -- use the right tool for the job. There's that old adage, "use the right tool for the job"; it definitely applies when working with wiring/electronics! I needed to replace connector pins on some solid-state circuit boards in a 1977 pinball machine, and thought I could go at it with carefully with needle-nose pliers. While I managed to get one or two pins crimped on the wire, it was something of a pain (ok, that's an understatement), it took quite a while, and I had little confidence in the sloppy finished product. When the realization hit me that I had at least 30 more of these to do, I decided to bite the bullet and find the right tool -- and this was it.Some of these connector pins are small and not easy to handle, especially with larger fingers. In addition, unless you have three hands, it's a tricky process -- since you'd need to hold the pin, the wire, and the tool all at once. Not so, with this tool! It ratchets through its function, which means you can insert the pin in the jaws, and squeeze the handle to the first ratchet step -- so the jaws grab & hold the connector pin in place. This allows you to then feed/position the wire in with one hand, and squeeze the handles with the other to complete the crimp. And yes, it can be done -- or at least started -- with one hand. Once the crimp has begun (which holds the wire in place), you can then use two hands to complete the squeeze on the tool. When the crimp is complete, the tool automatically releases. Also worthy of note: The tool has three different sizes built into the jaws, to accommodate different size wires/pins. Each jaw has a little 'step' to help you align the wire & sheath properly for an ideal crimp.I finished all my connector pins in very little time, and all the crimps looked beautiful. All the updated connectors functioned flawlessly. I HIGHLY recommend this tool. Save yourself the headache, time, and frustration with crimping connector pins by getting the right tool for the job: IWISS Dupont Professional Pin Compression Ratcheting Modular Insulated Terminal Crimper Pin Crimping Tool 2.54mm 3.96mm 28-18AWG 0.1-1.0mm2 with Wire-electrode Cutting Die 5Great for open barrel contacts! I bought this in hopes I could improve productivity in using DB (subminiature D) and similar small connectors that use open barrel crimp contacts. Previously, I used a $10 crimper and had to solder the wire to make sure it did not pull loose. As you can see, this tool makes excellent crimps that are quite strong - no need to follow up with solder. There is a learning curve - to make sure you insert the wire the right amount so you crimp wire and insulation - but that comes with the territory. I am anticipating saving lots of time with this tool! 5How to Use the IWISS Ratcheting Tool This tool works well, but I deducted one star because of the inexplicable failure of the manufacturer to provide any directions on its use. No, it's not intuitive, at least to me or apparently to the many other reviewers who have destroyed many connectors in the process of figuring out how to make it work. By the way, I am an electrical engineer by profession and an experienced builder. I have used the tool (so far) only with 18 and 22 gauge cable and Molex connectors type 2062103 and 2061103.I hope the following instructions will prove of value.1) If you are right handed, then grasp the tool in your left hand with the lettering visible and facing toward you, but upside down. See first photo.2) Position the connector in one of the three bottom slots, depending on the wire gauge. #22 gauge works well in the center bottom slot. #18 gauge works well in the innermost of the bottom slots.3) The connector should be positioned so that the "wings" are facing down. See second photo.4) The connector should be positioned with its back end flush with the tool and the front end of the connector facing away. See third photo.5) Close the tool slightly until the ratchet just engages and grasps the connector. For heavier wire gauge (e.g. #18), you may choose to insert the wire into the connector before placing the connector into the tool. See fourth photo.6) Use a separate wire stripper to strip about 3/16" to 1/4" of wire, and insert it into the connector. If you have a soft touch, you may just feel the unstripped plastic of the wire hit a stop when you insert it into the connector. In any case, don't insert the wire too far into the connector.7) Squeeze the ratchet all the way down. It will open after this step and your connector should have successfully crimped on to the wire. The larger, outer wings should be crimped in a fold over the insulated portion of the wire, while the inner, smaller wings should be crimped over the bare wire.If you have any doubts of the electrical quality of your crimp, you can add a tiny dab of solder to the wire-metal crimp. Not too much or the connector will not fit in the connector housing. 4Absolute best tool for the money; incredible time saver for anyone doing hobby or automotive wiring; trash those needle nose! These pin crimpers are truly a gift. They have saved me an immeasurable amount of time and frustration with every wiring project I do.Normally I pride myself on my electrical knowledge and custom wiring jobs, but any time I've had to actually repin a harness myself, I've hated life because all I've had to use are needle nose pliers to manually crimp pins onto wires, resulting in loose wires, pins coming off inside sockets, and incredible amounts of rage.I was skeptical at first about these crimpers because most wiring guys I know recommend ones that cost double or three times as much as these and have different swappable heads and everything that's much more complicated than these. I decided to try them out and I am so glad I did.Using 18ga wire with pretty common pins, I was able to crimp pins in maybe a few seconds. The pin just easily slides right into the crimper and it's stepped so you can crimp the insulation and wire at the same time. Squeeze the handles and presto, you've got yourself a neatly crimped wire with a secure pin on the end.I cannot find a single flaw with these. They perform excellently, they feel great in the hands, the ratcheting mechanism is nice to actually control how tight of a crimp you want, it's extremely easy to use, and it's as inexpensive as can be. I will recommend these to absolutely anyone and everyone looking for something to do this job. The pictures they post are entirely accurate. I'll probably end up buying another set just to keep at work.My only regret is not buying these before I just finished up making a harness that required 60 pins crimped on. I did them all with needle nose pliers and my hands haven't forgotten it. Needless to say, I'll be using this tool for a long time! 5Nice, full-cycle, single-operation open-barrel crimpers I purchased this for open-barrel contacts, specifically Futaba servo contacts and Molex C-Grid SL contacts. Those Molex contacts are good for headers on Arduino-like boards. This crimper replaces my stamped-steel hobby crimpers. My old hobby crimpers are not easy to use since misregistration is easy and destructive and the insulation-crimp and wire-crimp are two separate operations. These are more like standard, factory crimpers, crimping in one operation. They also have a full-cycle ratchet and provision for adjustment. Being targeted to no particular connector means that there is no positioner and may not be a perfect fit. Are they as good as $345 SL crimpers?: no way, but they are fine for hobby, service, R&D and are more versatile. The term "Dupont" was unfamiliar to me in connectors so I looked it up. Dupont created "Dupont Connector Systems" around a stamped, open barrel connector system. Later, this became Berg Electronics, Berg broke from Dupont. Later it became part of FCI and then Amphenol acquired FCI. With that, even the Berg brand was lost. 5FINALLY! A Crimper That Works! Without a doubt, these are the best ATX/Fan(Dupont)/Molex crimpers available on Amazon. Having tried 2 different sets before these, which simply did not accomplish what they were made to do, it was a great relief to finally find a model that actually worked, and worked well. I am using these to crimp motherboard wire connectors, because I am making my own cables from scratch in order to sleeve them and make my new custom PC look nice.I've used them to crimp dupont fan connectors using the smallest cutout on the crimpers. I've crimped ATX power connectors (6, 8, and 24 pin... which all use the same pins) using 16 and 18 gauge wire, with the medium-sized slot on the crimpers. I've also crimped traditional Molex IDE power connectors using the largest slot on the crimpers. So far, they have all worked extremely well.If you do not know what a "good crimp" looks like using these types of connectors, you can find guides that Molex has created which show how they intended the pins to be crimped. Essentially, the large set of wings on the pins should curl under until they just barely start turning away from each and slightly bite into the insulation of the wire in order to provide stress relief for the actual crimp that bites into the bare wire. The smaller wings which bite into the bare wire should also curl and essentially split the bare wire into 2 different sections, snugly grabbing each section with each wing individually. These crimpers do both of these tasks very admirably because the die is excellently made to very fine specifications. It has a significant tooth in the cutouts which cause the wings to curl as they are supposed to.The main problem with the other crimpers I found on Amazon was that the tooth that is used to curl the wings under was essentially missing (they only had slight bumps) and this caused the 2 wings to run into each other, fold over the top of each other, and smash onto the wire without biting into it. Both of them were absolutely horrible. The 2 models I tried previously were the "SainSmart Dupont Pin Crimping Tool" and the "HT-225D Full Cycle Ratchet Crimping Tool". Do NOT waste your money on these horribly manufactured products. I do not know why people are giving them positive reviews, but I suspect they are either fake reviews (and user review pictures of crimped connections made with different crimpers) or the people reviewing the tool do not know how the crimped connections are supposed to look (and are satisfied as long as the pin appears to be attached to the wire in some shape or fashion, even if they pin is smashed to hell).Take it from someone who has already had to sort through all the bad products to finally find the gem. These are the cheapest out of the 3, and they are the ONLY ones that perform the job they were made to do. If you are a custom PC cable sleever as I am, then rest assured you have found the right tool for the job you are looking to do. Additionally, if you have heard of the name "Lutro0" over @ MainFrameCustoms, a respected member of the PC cable sleeving community, you may have seen his reviews of a bunch of different crimpers and seen this particular set among the many he tested. For some reason, he did not give these a great review, and I'm not really sure why (maybe its cause he sells his own custom crimpers for over $50). I did not experience any of the problems he mentioned, and this tool makes crimped connections that match every specification of a "good crimp" that he mentions. Good luck and happy sleeving! 5
