Exactly what I needed Good balance of quality (solid wood, sturdy construction) and affordability (who pays a thousand dollars for a bookcase?!). We got three, and they arrived well-packed and undamaged. Straightforward to assemble if you're reasonably handy, and nice that the backing is wood instead of cardboard. We liked that they were unfinished, so we could pick the exact color we wanted. They took the stain and finish beautifully, with some natural variation for the grain, which is what you want from real wood. The shelf spacing worked for every fiction paperback and hardcover we have, though it probably would be too small for textbooks or "coffee table" books. I will definitely buy more if our book collection keeps growing! 5A quality buy Ordered two. Arrived on time without any damage. Assemblers were impressed with the wood quality and good construction. Professional painter said they were easy to paint and far better quality than others he'd seen. He drilled holes in the back for electric cords, was careful to use the correct bit, and everything went fine. All the hardware was there. I am impressed with the look of the bookcases. Even with the costs of professional installer (found thru Amazon) and the cost for the professional paint job, I still feel like the bookcases were a good buy. 5Hardwood Good but shelves not adjust able in the right place's 4Too heavy to ship. Simple enough to build your own with a few tools if you are a little handy. If you buy the wood a Lowes they will even cut it to your size 1Good Buy For the price this bookcase is very good quality. Unit arrived quickly and in good condition. Some of the minor assembly is already complete such as the cleats on the odd shelves and the top. Instructions were clear and all the required hardware was included. The buyer will have to assemble the two side panels with the back panels, odd shelves and top. Once that is complete, you will then slide in the additional even shelves. The body of the case is made from butcher block oak (not end grain) and looks good enough to immediately finish if you choose to do so. I have some very minor quibbles but really they are very minor: first, there are two wooden strips that run the full height of the back which support the plywood back which are not marked top or bottom making an installation upside-down possible. Second, the top of the unit has nice trim detail but it doesn't line up exactly with the side panels. (you really have to look Very closely to see this) A strip of thin moulding with an adhesive back (like the back strips) would be helpful in covering this very, very minor flaw. Seriously, for the same money you can either buy a cardboard / pressed board piece of junk or this one made from real wood. I expect to be buying more of these units for my office. 5Pieces did not align correctly / cheap backing which was chipped and cracked from the saw. Pretty good quality... the lines for the backing did not line up for the top and the sides, I had to get the Dremel out and extend the lines. Paint applied well to everything but the backing. If the pre-assembly had been more accurate, this would have been as easy as Ikea to assemble. Sloppy work on their end turned it into a much bigger job that it should have been. 2BY FAR THE BEST BOOKCASE UNDER $500 This is by far the best bookcase available for under $500. Every piece, including the back (which I leave off anyway) is true solid wood board - pine, i imagine. The unfinished version of this case is beautiful. I have 2 - side by side - and will continue adding another as needs be.Now, I have not had any bad experiences regarding delivery issues with this item. But then, if I had, that wouldn't be a complaint about the product itself, would it? I also read a review complaining that the bookcase is too heavy. With bookcases, "heavy" is a good thing. 5Very sturdy basic bookcase I am happy to have bookcases with solid wood shelves that won't sag when filled, as happens with particle-board shelves. The only problem I had with these bookcases had more to do with the shipper, who left them leaning against our front doormat the top of steps, so that it was difficult to get out the door. Had we known he was coming, we could have met him at a side door by an elevator. One carton was wet. In reality, are parcel delivery services the best way to ship a heavy carton of unassembled furniture? 5Not an all-purpose bookshelf, it is only for short books. Pros:- Arrived very well packaged, only a small amount of damage that was not structural and was on the back side so not visible.- It is real wood, ad the shelves are full strips (the sides are butcher-block pieced)- Assembly instructions are clear and simple; both bookcases assembled easily as designed- a fair valueCons:- A couple of pieces of hardware missing- Space is too short between shelves!!!! Because of the placement of the fixed shelves, the largest vertical space possible is 11.25", and that is at the cost of having the neighbouring shelves only give 8.75" of space. Consequently most of my books have to be filed laying flat in stacks, which looks like hell and is not functional. Too late to return now. 3Wonderful, well-made shelves I'm extremely pleased with these bookshelves. They are a beautiful butcher-block wood and are entirely wood throughout -- even the back panels. The finish has been very nicely sanded and is paper smooth. (I ordered them "unfinished" and plan to leave them that way, I like them so much.) They are somewhat difficult to put together -- but I think that is true of any shelf of this size. Once together, they are very sturdy. Highly recommended. 5
