Customer Reviews

A definite must have to remove humidity! (And lingering odors!) Love having a timer on the bathroom exhaust fan! It's a must have to remove the excess humidity from steamy showers and to avoid mold build up.Most people will turn the fan off when they leave the room, but there is usually still humidity in the room, or you can leave the fan running and hope you remember to return to shut it off...This timer is the perfect solution to letting the fan run longer than you may be in the room and it will shut itself off after the set time! Also great if you keep the cat litter box in your bathroom. You can remove the extra odors while you clean up, and it saves on air sprays that only add to the "air pollution"! 5An accurate timer, but you need the white wire too This Intermatic EI220 timer has replaced a failing rotary mechanical timer for a whole house fan. It works well. Running times have accurately matched the chosen settings, usually one or two hours. The timer requires a neutral (white) wire in the electrical box as well as the power that's being switched (black). The mechanical timer does not require the neutral, so I should have looked for that wire before ordering, Fortunately the white wire was there.Times of 1-2-4-8-ON are fine but wish it also had one half and 3 hours. The noisy old mechanical would give any odd interval like that, though with much less precision. 4Wastes a lot of power just to sense a button press This is a review for the EI210 Intermatic Timer. This use to be my favorite timer and I previously recommended it to others that wanted a timer to replace the mechanical twist type for use with bathroom fans. I've installed two in my previous home and three in my current home. It still has many things going for it but I recently discovered one fatal flaw that prompted me to write this review and give it a low rating.I'll start with a full description of the key features:It comes with 4 wires that are attached, Red, Green, White, and Black. It has a single large button that cycles through the settings starting with 10, then 20,30,60 minutes. You have to push for 3 seconds for "permanent hold"It has a LED indicator that stays lit while that much time is remaining (other timers just flash making it hard to see what is going on)Pros:Easy to useRelay based so it fully disconnects the load (doesn't require leakage power through the load which can cause erratic behavior)Doesn't use any power from the Ground wire or through the load to power itself.Cons:Wastes power! Draws 27mA@120VAC that's 3.24VA to just listen for button input (Vampire power) @ 0.3PF that is about 1 Watt.Uses wires instead of clamp style screw contacts (extra wire nuts)Large housing makes the electrical box cramped. Conclusion:While this is countdown timer can be a good solution to managing moisture in a bathroom, it's design is fatally flawed from an energy conservation standpoint. The engineers decided that saving money and power wasn't a priority, and as a result at 3.24VA when idle, it will waste 10 KWh a year ($1.00 a year @10cents/KWh). They decided to implement a very inefficient power supply to power the electronics that listen for your button press. You will notice that your light switch area is warm from this waste heat. That said, it may still be a good solution as moisture in bathrooms that isn't controlled can cost you far more. I was going to install this for every fan in the house in two more locations, but I'm going to find another solution now that I know how much money it will cost me per year just to have it connected. In my laundry room and bathroom I rarely use the fans so I'll probably go back to a simple switch. There are other moisture sensor based solutions and probably more efficient options I'll be looking into. 2Function over Form The EI210 works as expected, though the product is aesthetically unappealing. However, this device provides a comparatively inexpensive timer control wherever a light or fan needs to remain on for a fixed amount of time and then automatically switch off.- Provides four countdown times and an 'always on' setting.Repeatedly pushing a single button cycles through time selection from low to high--the unit lacks the means to reverse the order (high to low) is so desired;- Countdown selection indicator lights. The device illuminates an internal light (not an LED) next to the current countdown selection. If the unit has 10mins remaining from an initial section of 60mins, the light next to "10 mins" appears (and so on);- Fit is not perfect. The device fits within a Decora-style plate, but its dimensions are slightly smaller resulting in a noticeable gap. Additionally, the device mounting bracket isn't recessed sufficiently to provide enough clearance for the mounting screw heads without causing the plate to rest flush against the wall. If the mounting screws are tightened too much the device face rests below the plate surface, creating noticeable and unsightly gap;- Control of devices is adequate. The unit automatically switches off one or more lights and/or fans without any delay, sound, or flicker. This particular model is widely distributed under private label of various manufactures, so shop around. 3Perfect for bathroom fan. I recently installed a very quiet high volume bathroom fan and was concerned that it would get left on and waste heat in the winter. It is also nice to let the fan run for a few minutes after leaving the restroom to let the, eh, after effects completely dissipate. I have a spring wound timer in another bathroom and I much prefer the looks and convenience of this timer compared to that one.Several things to be aware of: this is a large timer. The body is comparable in size to a GFCI receptacle. Make sure you have sufficient room in your box before purchase. A shallow box probably will not work.Second, it connects via four 6" leads and wirenuts rather than screw terminals like a "normal" switch. Neutral is required for operation. Connect black to hot, white to neutral, green to ground, and red to load.Third, it fits into a GFI wall plate, but not perfectly. I have seen this in several other reviews and it holds true in my case. It fits well enough for my taste, but the corners are a little too rounded and its a little too shallow to fully fill the rectangle hole in a GFI wall plate.Overall I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it. 5UNRELIABLE GARBAGE. At this point I don't think Intermatic can do anything right. First I bought a 6hr Intermatic wind-up timer and after several months the unit stopped counting down and never turned off. In good faith, I bought another. 4 months later the same problem! OK, Intermatic mechanical timers are garbage. So I bought this electronic unit! It seemed to work for a while (at least it didn't shut off shortly after turning it on!) but I became suspicious after a while because mornings in the house were still hot so I began monitoring it. Sure enough this unit shuts off about 10 -15 minutes after it was told to run This happens in either 1hr, 2hr, 4hr, or 8hr setting. under 50 to 150 watt loads. UNRELIABLE GARBAGE.Matt Rimple 1Works well Pros: Simple to use, good light indication.Cons: Does not fit perfectly into the decora wall plate. This timer switch worked well for my needs. The model I got required 4-wire hookup, including neutral. The switch works well. All you do is hit that bottom button to set the time. To turn off the timer before the set time has elapsed, you will need to hit the bottom button until you go past the last time setting. The lights on the time settings act as countdown. With the timer on at the longest duration, the lower subsequent lights will turn on when the remaining duration has reached that level. The switch does not install perfectly into the decora wall plate. It leaves a noticeable gap between itself and the plate. Some reviewers have used shims to prop up the switch to be level with the cover plate, but I have not had such luck yet. Honestly, they should have made a product that just fits, hence one star was docked. 4Would not recommend. Tried two units and it's getting worse Changing my ratings from 3 to one star based on a second unit that failed after 19 (Purchased March 2016).The switch goes through all the options but when off the whole house fan stays on. I have to disconnect it. Again, out of warranty. I am looking for a different maker.Bought it to replace an identical unit that lasted four years. It works well with a whole house fan I run at night. Sometimes it can get too cold if I have it run all night so having a timer is great. The maker of the whole house fan quiet cool (selling on a web site, A Trendy Home) did not respond to my call. The maker of the switch Intermatic responded fast and responded to follow up questions. They were honest and noted that there is not any improvement from the last unit. I appreciate the quick response and straight talk. Warranty is a year so I did not ask for a replacement. It is cheaper on Amazon than it is with the A Trendy Home website by almost 50%. So I assume that I'll have to buy another one in 2020 and take that as a maintainance cost. 1just like other reviews of this product We bought this one as an exact replacement for one we use to control roof top heat wires during the winter. The original one ran perfectly for about 5 years and then just totally failed. It is mounted in the garage. Since these devices have ballasts, I assumed that is what finally failed. So we installed the new one and, just like other reviews of this product, it would never stay on for the specified period of time chosen. I carefully checked all the settings and it was always off before it was supposed to be. So I returned it and requested a replacement. The replacement is just as faulty. I don't know what Intermatic changed. I didn't change a thing. Simply pulled out the old one and wired the new one up in the exactly the same way. But these devices are no longer functioning properly. The only thing that works properly is the Hold button so that it is always on. Returning the second one also.Update: I ordered a different 2/4/8/12 hour timer switch made by Woods. Model 59014. It works perfectly. I've monitor the settings and the unit turns off exactly on time. It does not have the "Hold" function. So there's no way to have it always in. But I'm fine with that. 2Works great for my attic fan! Works great with my big whole house attic fan. I have a 24" gable mounted fan. Used it all summer with no issues. I use to have a dial timer that worked most of the time, but if you didn't turn it far enough it would not shut off at all. Some family members had a hard time understanding this concept. Now it's simple just push a button to the desired hour and its done.Simple to install with basic electrical knowledge. No harder than replacing any switch or outlet. 5
