Customer Reviews

No lifetime warranty for consumersThis vacuum breaker failed (started spurting water from the ports) after only 14 months. I contacted Hansgrohe customer service and after I emailed a video of the defective unit they agreed to send me an replacement as a courtesy. The warranty statement on the Amazon website is false and misleading as it states that there is a lifetime warranty for consumers. Limited Consumer Warranty; Replacement or repaired parts of products will be covered for the term of this warranty, as stated in the following two sentences. If you are a consumer who purchased the product for use primarily for personal, family or household purposes, this warranty extends for as long as you own the product and the home in which the product is originally installed. This is their "official" warranty policy for the vacuum breaker which I received from the customer service rep: ** Please note vacuum breakers are not covered under our limited lifetime warranty which only covers the manufacturing defects of the product. Vacuum breakers are considered wear and tear items that are expected to wear out over time. I'm sending out a courtesy vacuum breakers but in the future you would have to purchase them.**What exactly is "wear and tear" on a vacuum breaker?1So far happy as replacement to failed Kohler breaker...A bit more than four years ago I installed a Kohler K-9660 ASIN B0014YGM3K, which failed in the form of slowing my shower head water flow to a barely usable trickle.Other than the short service life, I was unhappy with the Kohler's appearance. Amazon stock photos don't show the white plastic threaded portion (you can see it in the photo I included) that made this look like cheap and hacked together. So for about half the cost, I was happy to give this Hansgrohe unit a try, as it features an all-chrome finish.I'm only a few weeks into its use, and so far the performance is fine. In fact, I'm nearly certain I now see higher pressure from my shower head than I was getting with the Kohler when it was working -- the shower head visibly "jumps" in its cradle when I pull the diverter handle from the pressure. Will this stand the test of time? We'll see; I'll update if necessary. The downsides? - This vacuum breaker has its own ugliness to it. Instead of white plastic showing through, it's the funny looking holes that are visible from the underside (as I see it looking at it when in the shower -- shown in the picture). If my hand shower had a larger threaded ring to match the diameter of the vacuum breaker, this wouldn't be visible, but nevertheless, it's ugly and looks hacked in. - The piece came to me in a tiny white box, no label, no instructions, and unlike the Kohler, doesn't even have a "Flow" indicator on it (refer to the Flow marking on the Kohler breaker in my photo). The direction might not be obvious to someone installing their first vacuum breaker. The Hansgrohe website has a 4-page installation guide that clearly shows the correct orientation. - There are no flats on this piece. You'll need decent soft-grip pliers to install it without marring the chrome finish.4If you have a hand-held shower you need this. This is a very handy device. It allows you to drain your hand-held shower head and hose which prevents the build up of red mold in the shower head.5Meets the requirementsMany cities require these to be installed between the lookout nipple on the wall of the shower and the hand-held shower head. You simply screw the fitting onto the hose and then screw this combination onto the connection at the wall. This prevents any water or any other liquid (I.E. chemicals that might be in a bucket, etc.) from getting sucked back into the water supply if the hand-held shower head were to be immersed in something bad and someone creates a suction on a lower level of the home. This is priced about right, and is good quality. Even if it's not required by code, not a bad idea to install one on your hand-held shower heads.5Half the price of plumbing supply mail orderThis is the second time I have replaced it. The recent one lasted about 8 years. The one before that was present when I bought the condo and was at least 3 years old when I replaced it. You would think they could make a plastic diaphragm that lasted longer.Amazon was nearly half the price of the plumbing supply store (and what I paid last time) and more convenient, since it had to be mail ordered anyways. Delta makes a similar product that is in the same price range and I was going to buy it until I found amazon's lower price. I paid the extra couple dollars to have a metal connection rather than the black plastic ring visible per comments about the Delta version.Simple to install. Hand-tight wasn't quite good enough to keep the shower hose from twisting off. A rubber Grip(r)-Wrench did the trick without scratching the chrome.4Works, but wears out too fastI just purchased my 3rd one of these for my kids shower in 4 years. They work when new, but wear out after about 2 years of use (daily showers by two kids).3Looks nice, and least expensiveI'm doing an extensive home renovation. Building codes in my city requires all handheld showers to have a vacuum breaker to prevent backflow. Although I think this requirement is somewhat ridiculous, I have no choice but to obey in order to pass inspections. I bought this Hansgrohe unit, as well as another unit made by Delta Faucet. I personally think the Hansgrohe one looks nicer, and it's less expensive too. I don't really care how long these things will last, because when they start acting up, I'll just take them off and throw them away. I only need them to pass the stupid inspection ;-)5Lasted less than a year.I have owned several of these Hansgrohe Vacuum Breakers throughout the years, and they just do not last very long. The last one I ordered, which turned out to be exactly a year ago today, lasted less than a year.I am going to look for a more reliable or serviceable alternative this time.1Seems to break easily We installed this as our handheld shower recommended it. It was good when it was working as it prevented water from flowing back into the pipe. However, water eventually started leaking from the unit and it broke soon after. 2Buy the Delta, it fits and is repairable. The OEM Grohe vacuum breaker is well made except for the diaphragm. That's a POC and fails in as little as 10 months. Grohe does not sell the diaphragm separately, so for an OEM replacement, you need to buy the whole unit. Delta and Anson sell a repair kit for 1/2 the price of the complete breaker. The Delta breaker is a perfect fit replacement. Next time one of my Grohe breakers fails, I'll see if the Delta kit fits the Grohe body.1Worked horribly at lower flow rate.It may just have been a bad unit, but the part that I got did horribly with lower flows. At full rate, it worked ok, but if you tried to run in at a low rate, water came pouring out of the vents in the vacuum breaker - more water came out of the vacuum breaker than came out of the hand shower. I returned it for the Delta one which worked great (even though you see some black plastic so it doesn't look quite as nice).1Perfect replacement Works perfectly. I only wish they offered replacement of just the washer, as that is what wears out after about 3 years use. 5
