Customer Reviews

Tools evolveThe Gerber is the next step in the evolution of the e-tool. It is so much smoother and functionally superior to the Ames. The Gerber is a few ounces lighter, no hot spots on the handle, and better position for the hand bolt to lock the shovel head and handle. Durability is a wash - do not get spooked by the handle. The Army did some testing, and while the Ames took 958 dynamic swings-whacks before it broke, the Gerber took 790, and the Ames had catastrophic failure, whereas the Gerber just needed a new bolt at the designed break point. Read the U.S. General Accounting Office report. There is much more analysis of the tools there, but suffice to say both tools are world class, with the Gerber edging out the Ames for the government contract. An area of preference would be the adjustment angles of the heads of the tools. The head of the Gerber shovel is adjustable to approx 170 degrees for straight shoveling, approx 80 degrees for picking, and approx 20 degrees for grappling hook. The Gerber fits in the same ACU molle e-tool pouch on my rucksack as where I used to keep my Ames, which is now retired with honor in the shed. Keep it clean after each mission, and use a light machine/gun oil on the moving parts, and it will last a long time under heavy use. 5Great emergency off-road toolThis little thing folds down small enough that I can keep it in my car, tucked away in a small emergency box where I keep some road and off-road items to get me out of trouble. It came in handy this winter when I got my Cherokee stuck (beached basically) and I had to literally dig the car out of the little hill I got it stuck in. Ground was frozen, it was 28 degrees outside, and it took me 3 hours. But I couldn t have done it without this incredibly strong and durable trenching tool. It would have taken me 6 hours doing it by hand, or with a wooden stick. Plus, the plastic handle prevented my hands from dealing with cold metal. Which I appreciated very much.Buying a second one so next time some one else can help me dig. And probably a third to keep around the house, just in case. Will also make an awesome gift for anyone you know that might drive in hazardous areas, or in crazy weather. 5Gerber E-ToolI'm very glad I made this purchase. I already have an actual military E-Tool, which has had a very useful life. It is starting to fall apart and that's why I wanted to get another, but I didn't want to spend $60 on one so I chose this model. Gerber makes very nice multi-tools and knives so after reading some reviews on this product and experience with their other products I felt safe purchasing it. I live in the mountains and used it on a camping trip last weekend and used it to dig a fire pit and holes for posts, it did the job flawlessly. The shovel does lock at an angle (not quite 90 degrees though even though another review said it doesn't.) Very easy to fold and unfold even if there is still mud on it. When it is locked in either position it feels very sturdy and comfortable in the hands. I would definitely buy this again. I do wish it had a carrying case though. I will pick one up later. 5Best camping and small utility shovel everI keep this in my bag for hiking and camping and am super pleased. Yeah it's a little pricey but it's solid and folds up nice and compact to fit in just about any bag. I've had no trouble digging small fire pits or just uprooting small stuff. For a shovel this rigid, it's not heavy. It's probably not as sturdy as those all metal ones (the well made ones) but it's also much lighter. Those shovels you find at army surplus stores are probably a fair bit sturdier but they weigh a ton and let's get serious, it's a small shovel. You're going to use it for small shovel jobs, not landscaping or digging trenches. It's a small light utility shovel that's crazy convenient and easily fits in any hiking or "bug out" type bag. Good job Gerber. I'll probably buy more of these in the future. 5Needs to be Sharpened and No Case/CoverIf you have "Served", then you know a version of this shovel. The military version has the pick. Other than for combat training, we rarely used the pick feature. So I went for this one, which at $47/ea, is $20 less than the "pick" version and a good value. However, nothing on the shovel blade is sharp and ready to use, this includes the serrated edge. You will need to spend some time to do this before packing it away. 4Quality tool well worth the money.Well worth the money. I upgraded to the Gerber based on recommendations from friends and have not been disappointed. This tool replaced a cheap Army-Navy store version, that while it worked, was far flimsier than the Gerber. The Gerber has good weight and balance. The edges are able to be sharpened and have held the edge that I put on them making cutting through tree roots a lot easier. The locking mechanism is solid and doesn't loosen up (like the cheap version did) when driving it into the ground.Based on initial use, I anticipate this tool to hold up well to the tasks that I'll throw its way via backpacking, camping and off-roading. 5Compact Size. Big Results.OK, let's all agree first off that this will never be a full size shovel with all the benefits that those bring, but for what it is, this shovel is great. The size is super compact when folded up which is awesome because I leave it in the toolbox on my truck. However, the amount of material you can actually move with it will surprise you. If you need to hack down a small shrub or sapling you can do that as well with the serrated side. Definitely worth keeping in a truck to help get you out of a jam. 5Great shovel for serious trenching around your tent! This thing is legit! I bought this to replace a Gerber 22-41578 Gorge Folding Shovel, which was actually closer to a large trowel than it was to a shovel. It's like night and day with this one. Handle, shovel head, blade, and shaft are all solid. There were a few nights of really heavy rain during my camping trip last summer and the site was less than ideal for water drainage. Normally I just do some real light trenching around my tent, but this time I was working around several tents and a pop up canopy. I could not believe how easily this shovel chewed through a mess of earth, root, and rock. Though it's not a long shovel, the leverage I was getting was good, and there was no undue strain on my back. Blade is sharp, so I was getting deep trenches with minimal shovelfuls. I've used it numerous times over the last 2 years and it's the type of product you know you'll be using for many years to come. Well built and dependable. Never know when you'll need it. Folds up compact. Opted to get the sheath for it separately. Definitely recommend! 5One word, trustworthyVery happy with this purchase. I've had cheap e-tools and have been let down when I needed them most. Took this with me in the mountains and Utah and it served me very well. Slid off of a mountain trail into heavy snow. Dug me out of the snow and broke up hard packed snow and use around tires to get down to gravel for traction. I have ruined a lesser e-tool doing the exact same thing for someone else. Used it around camp the next few days and couldn't be happier. 5unbreakable, overbuilt , tank of a shovel.this is just an awesome camp shovel, i can see no way you could ever possibly destroy this beast. i primarily purchased it for digging out fire pits or scraping out cockle burs, for a place to camp for the night, in one of our field edges, by a woods.i can't wait for some dutch oven cooking, handling the coals for the lid and bottom.i really wish this came with the pick, but amazon didn't have it available, at all. that would be a great for field work on the farm for digging out stones , in farmfield work.i have had 2 other shovels, that were straight wood handles, tha t folded , from the korean war. those were junk. 've tried the TSC version that mimics the gerber. .this is an absolute tank.i am giddy with this purchase. 5
