Works Excellent. Great Seller and Price. I use a 6 Micron Filter.Works as it should. As always I cut and sweat my pipes together . I do not use shark bites. I am not against them. I like a piece of mind when I leave my house. That when I come home it s not flooded. We use a 6 Micron filter on the system, it works excellent. Remember always after the tank, and before your water softener or any other filtration systems cleaners etc. . If you install before your water tank and it clogs.You can get false readings and you can burn out your pump above or inground jet pump. .5The three way valve on the top is nice.Didn't know what to expect with these, I purchased two. They come with a nice mounting bracket that can be mounted for either water flow direction. The top cover can also be flipped depending on the water flow. It also includes the screws to mount it with. There is a thee way valve on top to allow you to turn off, bypass or allow flow through the filter. A nice feature to come with, it saves shutting down the water to change filters. There is also other manufactures that make the filters cartridges that go into it, allows you a greater choice in filter elements to use. There is also a air bleed valve on it to purge the air in it after a filter change. That's a lot of nice things to have in a filter housing. I was very pleased with it.5Just what I was looking forHi quality and nice looking. Well made and coupled with the Icepure Big Blue Sediment and Activated Carbon Water Filter you cannot go wrong. I have had house filters before that I fought with to screw and unscrew and that leaked, but this unit is large and after having taken it apart a couple of times now, because I wanted to test it and to put a filter in and then to replace the filter because I left a washer out, I can say it is no big deal to unscrew and screw this can back home and it is leak free with just a snug up with the supplied can wrench. I would buy again5A decent whole-house filter; install takes some skill/practiceI decided to install a whole house filter again (been many years since the first one) due to a recent investment in an ng tankless hot water heater in August (Navien) as well as an ng Lochinvar boiler that's about 6 years old. The idea was to help protect their internals from mineral buildup and possibly corrosion. They're both high efficiency mod-con appliances, so other maintenance routines need to be done. A whole house water filter installation is not tremendously difficult, but it's not a piece of cake either. You're dealing with your 3/4 or 1 inch line entrance from public or your well and you're cutting a piece of perfectly good copper. THE water supply will be down. It takes pipe fitting and connection skills. I used propex, aka pex A, aka Uponor. The plumber who installed my Navien water heater used it considerably. It's neat stuff. I did buy a dewalt expansion tool- expensive at $400, but figured I would be using it to fix, retrofit and install new. The stuff is great. The fittings are a little more expensive, but you can shop. So I did this with brass 3/4 propex to 1" mnpt, 3/4 propex to 3/4 sweat and 3/4 to 3/4 90-degree propex elbows. Pex goes together fast, and it is a very secure connection. Though I did have one pex elbow split and cause a leak and had to redo. Taking apart the pex is about the same as de-sweating soldered copper- maybe a little easier, but the stuff is tight when installed, so it takes some work- heat gun and a sharp knife.4Water hammer I have qty. 2 homes, and qty. 1 GEWH40L filter in each home. In one home, no water hammer issues. In another home, water hammer. When I isolate the filter (position qty. 3 ball valves correctly), the water hammer issue goes away = water hammer is DEFINITELY caused by the GEWH40L. There are a few other reviews here which state water hammer issues with this filter. I gave 2 stars because 1 of the 2 filters works good. I don't know if various pipe dynamics (elbow, bends, long runs, etc.) can contribute to water hammering - and I don't know if maybe the filter which causes water hammer is defective. Another reviewer here indicated that Amazon would not help with returns, so I don't think I'm going to try to hassle with a return. I'm going to try the Culligan WH-HD200-C. 2I have two of these installed from well to the ... I have two of these installed from well to the house. Adding a third to a storage tank.Hint: The o-rings last longer if you hand-tighten the filter canister. Use the wrench to loosen only. 5GE should reconsider this filterIt has a couple of good features that everyone loves; clear canister and bypass valve. It also has a built in check valve that gives a lot of people a lot of grief. I just spent the last 11 months trying to solve problems that started a few weeks after installing this filter.The pipes were banging like crazy. I installed a new water hammer, new pressure relief valve on the hot water heater (it started leaking from the overflow); nothing helped. We had weird pressure surges at all the faucets....all caused by the built-in check valve. I used a fix I found on a plumbing site to dig the valve out of the housing; problem solved.Maybe they've changed it since I bought mine a year ago, but if not, they really ought to consider removing it from store shelves, or at least tell people about the pitfalls.2Good solid quality unit Several of my neighbours had purchased one of these units with the solid sump cover and when one of them saw this one with the clear glass he suggested I buy it. He helped me install it yesterday and all of us on my street that installed these units highly recommend getting one. This unit has a very handy a shut off valve to simply stop the water and change the filter. 5I highly recommend this.I've installed several of these for customers and myself. This has been my "go to" because I never have any problems with any of them. Never had a housing crack or seal fail or any negative issue. I highly recommend this.5Don't make the same mistake I did!We recently purchased a house that is on well water that we have be remolding. One of the areas I wanted to improve was the water system. The well was is good shape, fairly good quality water, but I wanted to add a house filter to catch sediment and soften the water. After doing a cursory search, we settled on the GE water softener and GXWH40L whole house filter. The GE softener works well, and I am satisfied enough with it, but that's not what this review is about.Not knowing very much about house filters, I ended up really just seeing what most big box stores had in stock, which is usually the GE brand of filters or the Culligan. Both products looked fairly similar in features, I ended up going with GE to match our softener. I purchased the "high capacity" unit since I figured, well we don't want to slow things down, do we? I received it and was disappointed right away. After my disappointment and reading issues, I decided to put it in service since I had already invested into the product. After several months, I took it out completed and replaced it with a different product. That is the background, here are my ramblings:- High Flow -This claim is just ridiculous. This one was created by the marketing group. Don't fall for it. The ports on the unit are 1", however as you can see from the picture I uploaded, it is choked down to a little hole for the water to go through. Maybe 3/8"? Terrible design. Does it reduce water flow? It did for me, but to be fair, it may be adequate for your needs. On facets, they are limited flow to around 1-1.5gpm, so I didn't see any real change, however I did notice it on my tub. It dropped my fill rate to around 4gpm. I was getting 7-8 before. Is this a huge deal? Well maybe, if you use several showers at the same time, or dishwasher, laundry, etc. Again, this is marketed for a large house, so I would expect multiple users at once. Also note, once the filter starts to get full, it will restrict flow even more. So new, maybe not any problems, but after a month or two, you may start to really see some drop.- Water Hammer/Check Valve -This wasn't a problem just for me, many people in the reviews have this issue. To summarize, they installed a check valve in this housing to help with backflow when changing out the filter. This is great when removing the lower housing, however it can introduce water hammer into your system. I was able to get around this by just removing the check valve from the housing, by digging it out. It was a solution I read online that seemed to work for people and it worked for me as well. I purchased this product without knowing this could be an issue, as many other people have. It's not clearly stated, otherwise I would have not purchased it.GE does have a disclaimed on their box: *May require an expansion tank (if not already installed)Talk about fine print.- Filter/Housing size -In addition to above, I was initially using a 30 micron filter. If I wanted to jump up to a smaller size, say 5 micro, then the your flow could be restricted even further. In this case, a 10 inch filter is just not adequate. This isn't a fault of the GE product, it's just a size issue. For large houses, this housing/size may be not be enough. Again, your mileage may vary, and depending on how dirty your water is, you may be changing filters quite often.My Final Solution:After my dissatisfaction with the GE product, I ended up looking for alternatives. I found several brands online that offered full 1 inch ports without restriction. I was still concerned with the amount of flow that can pass through the filter, and some people just put two of them in parallel. I did not want to do that since that would be two sets of filters that would need to be changed out. Then I came across the 20 inch filter housing. Full 1 inch port and 20 inch filters for greater surface space. I was sold. Installed it without any issues and it works great. Great flow! I do wish my unit had a clear housing, but I'm happy with this setup. I ended up getting a Pentek 1" Threaded 20" Genuine Big Blue Filter setup. I purchased it on amazon for $79. which is 20 bucks more than the GE, but well worth it. (Just so you know, I am not associated with Pentek in anyway). There are other brands that sell 20 inch housings as well.I know, it's a bit of a long story. This product is sold to the consumer, and many people make uninformed decisions. I'm not saying this is a terrible product, it does work. However, it may be inadequate for your needs.But in my opinion, if you are going to put in a whole house filter, spend the extra 20 bucks, get a larger filter with better flow and twice the capacity for collecting sediment.2Can cause water hammerAfter our plumber installed this filter system in our house we began to experience water hammer, pipe knock after the first time the filter was changed. When the control lever is set to bypass the filtration the knock goes away and returns when the lever is set to filter water. Our plumber said the problem is with the filter, and that an additional antiwater hammer valve will need to be installed costing about $125. The first filter changed orange with trapped sediment after a few days (we live in AZ). The second filter installed is still white but filters. Anyone else have this problem?3This is a great deal. It appears to be well madeThis is a great deal. It appears to be well made, and I love that it came bundled with a sturdy wall mount. Since my house draws water from a private well, the high-flow filter is essential to minimize pressure loss. And you really can't beat the price... the mounting bracket alone will tack on an additional 20-30 dollars when comparison shopping. I'd say overall a great buy.Really the only issue I have with this at all is due to the fact that I neglected to order filters at the same time, and they're now back ordered. Make sure you order yours with the filter!5The best is yet to.I used this as a 2nd stage filter the first stage filter I'm using is the ispring pre filter for sediment, dirt etc and its performing it's job pretty well but as far the ge whole house im using that as a 2nd stage cause i don't want to overburden this with everything so now ge does not have to work or perform that hard but overall all os good very happy with purchase.5
