Wow - great coffee!! I'm not a coffee snob, other than I like to grind my beans fresh and use a French press. I'm generally on a budget, but I haven't been completely happy with what's available at the supermarket - either quality or price. I decided to give this a shot because of the price and reviews, and I'm glad I did.First, this coffee smells incredible - it's almost reminiscent of popcorn, in a way. But I can't really describe the earthy, toasty smell other than it's the best smelling coffee I've ever encountered. I'm not too familiar with low acidity coffee, but this brews up with great, complex flavor, but it's also incredibly smooth and has good strength. After brewing this several times I'm finding that I like it more and more with time. It's just a wonderful, satisfying cup of coffee to have at home. To me it's much, much better than anything I can find at the supermarket, and you can't beat the price.I couldn't be happier with this purchase. 5Perfect Coffee IMHO Great price for a monster amount of coffee that is perfect. Colombian is my favorite, eventually I will branch out to try the other wonderful sounding flavors offered by Coffee Bean Direct. I love the aroma from the opening of the bag to grinding to brewing. Once opened I store in mason jars, I'm personally not a fan of freezing coffee. I am a coffee fiend, I have a hand grinder just in case the power goes out, I can still have coffee available. It is so wonderful to be able to get 5 pounds of this delicious coffee. Perfect coffee, IMHO. 5HORRIBLEI don't understand what happend. Perhaps I mis-ordered because this is the most acid tasting coffe I've ever gotten. In addition to the taste the coffee does not "bloom" like it has previously in our french press coffee pot. We've tried to drink it but I'm ready to throw it away & order something else. Perhaps I've ordered "Poor Man's" instead of "Penny Pincher" & there is where to difference in quality and taste is. Very disappointed. Lesson learned.1For the price, this is probably the most luxurious coffee that you can get. This is a good thing if you are shipping coffee all over the world, but the fact that it isn't resealable makes it a pain in the butt if you are living out of a foot locker in Afghanistan and trying to keep 5 lbs of coffee fresh. The fact that this stuff smells so amazing in my french press and anybody that walks by is trying to score some from me makes it not last as long so it hasn't been too much of a worry. Open with a knife, roll down the top, and gorilla tape shut and all is good in the world. This coffee is life changing!5Excellent Costa Rican Just made my first pot with these beans... a very smooth Costa Rican roast.The beans are not oily and seem pretty fresh. A nice medium roast and an excellent breakfast coffee...I'd rank this up there with some of the better local brands. Once I went to Costa Rica, I found out how nice their coffee was...This did not disappoint.. highly recommend. 5A better than average medium roast - but if your expect a dark French Roast you will be disappointed. Definitely not a dark French Roast. The beans are a deep brown, grind up to a medium brown and at 2 TBSP per cup brew up to a decent, low acid medium roast coffee but not at all what I would expect of a product labelled "French Roast" My grinder is a Breville ceramic burr - with a lower end grinder I could see the results being far more disappointing. Won't order this variety again and don't recommend to anyone who prefers a true Dark Roast coffee. 3A BLEND LABELLED AS 100%This is not 100% Tarrazu coffee. Real Tarrazu has a very distinctive smell and taste, and ever since I visited Costa Rica a decade ago I've been drinking Tarrazu coffee almost every morning. I can detect only a hint of flavor from these beans and it appears that they are actually a blend,,, there is very little real Tarrazu coffee in them. I bought these beans in order to save a couple of dollars, and its good coffee, but it's probably overpriced anyway since who knows what kind of beans they actually are and they are dishonestly labeling them as 100% Tarrazu. AVOID!2Not sure what happenedI have been buying coffee from Coffee Bean direct for the last few years and have tried many different roasts. I prefer the darker roasts. We use subscribe and save to order our coffee. The last two bags of this Kenya AA have been awful. They both were a light roast and very bitter, with a terrible after taste. I thought the one bag was an outlier so I opened up the last 5 lb bag and the coffee is the same. Not sure whats happened but I guess I will need to try to find different coffee.1Good, not great. Call it...underwhelming.I bought the Jamaican Blue Mountain Style coffee (which isn't Jamaican Blue Mountain - they do state that clearly - but tries to imitate it).I've had a blend with real Jamaican Blue Mountain before (mixed with other beans to enhance the flavor - and lower the cost), and was hoping for something that heavenly again. This wasn't it. It makes a good cup of coffee, maybe even above average. If they weren't comparing it to Jamaican Blue Mountain, I might even call it great...maybe.I can't tell by looking if beans are old or stale, as some people have said in other comments - but the expiration on the bag was over a year out, which is usually a good sign. There wasn't much aroma when I opened the bag, and the freshly ground and brewed coffee doesn't have a lot of aroma, either. I re-bagged the beans into smaller containers, so hopefully the last cup I brew will be nearly as good as the first - but 5 pounds is a lot of coffee. It makes the price affordable, though, so that keeps it from being a bust - under $9/lb for good coffee is acceptable.All things being equal, though, one day I'm going to splurge on real Jamaican Blue Mountain again. Until then...I might give this another try if the price is right. It's certainly drinkable, just not outstanding. Maybe this weekend I'll see if french press (rather than the quality drip coffeemaker I'm using) can get more out of it.3Really good budget brew.I drink a lot of coffee. Probably more than I should, so it was good that I found these beans on Amazon. At just over 5 bucks a pound, it offers great value. I like a dark roast but many cheap beans taste burnt. This blend does a nice job as it tastes as good as a more expensive blend. Of course taste is subjective, and not everyone will agree, but I found that this is a great way for me to get my coffee fix.5Don't take it awayMy heart doctor has recently ordered me to drastically reduce my caffeine intake. I found this coffee, after trying many others, and decided to try it. It seems that I was never really addicted to caffeine but rather to the taste of a good coffee. I grind this at 15 in my Encore grinder; I use an Osaka metal filter and the pour over method. To me the taste is full, bold, smooth. I don't taste the hollowness that speaks of a slight bitterness of many coffees. But everyone has different tastes, that's for sure.What concerns me is that this might be a one-off deal, that it might not be available in the future at a price that I, on SS, can afford. If it is, then I surely hope that someone will step in and fill up the vacuum.5Great beans for Jura coffeemakerThe Penny Pincher beans have been great for use in our Jura coffeemaker. One concern I have always had with the types of beans we buy is the amount of oil on the bean. I have read that too much oil will damage high end coffe makers that grind whole beans. The Penny Pichers do not have excessive oil and are perfect for our coffeemaker.My wife and I have two or 3 cups per day so the bulk pricing on this is very attractive.The taste of the beans are exceptional so with all this, I will continue to buy these and I would recommend them for others to try.5Great coffee at a great price!I'm enjoying a gigantic mug of this coffee right now! About a year ago I bought a 5lb bag of Poor Man's Blend Dark Roast based on the positive reviews, but accidentally chose the ground product instead of the whole bean. I almost returned it but thought, what the heck, I'll give the burr grinder a break for a few weeks. I'm so glad I did: it is now one of my go-to coffees. This coffee, though a dark roast, is remarkably balanced- the aroma is tobacco and chocolate, and the palate is robust, but definitely not burnt. To me, the palate is also on the sweet side, but it is balanced by mild acidity and clean bitterness. I'd say the coffee, which I drip brew at a rate of ~1 cup whole beans (medium-fine grind) to yield 10 6-oz. cups of coffee, has a light-medium body on the palate. Evidently, it's a blend of beans from South America (familiar) and India (who knew?), and maybe that explains why the dark-ish roast doesn't give an overpowering coffee. Finally, the 5lb bag typically goes for less than $40, so the coffee is under $8 per pound. That's pretty inexpensive in the high-end coffee space, which makes this stuff a very good value, IMHO.Ultimately, coffee preferences, like all flavor preferences, are highly personal. Consequently, your results may be different from mine, but the quality-price equation at the very least makes this one that you should try, especially if you favor darker roasts.5a new favorite! I love these beans. Delicious, complex coffee flavors, but with a low acidity and a mild up-front punch. Kind of like some Indonesian coffees, but also unique -- more earthy, less fruity. Everyone else says it's "smooth", and I suppose that is exactly right.Do some quick internet research on the "monsooning" process and how it came about, it's a fascinating story that reminds me the happy accident of historical circumstance behind the India Pale Ale beer style. I've been a big coffee drinker for years, but I don't think I'd had monsooned Malabar coffee before I bought this bag from Amazon. I've been missing out.The bag arrived stamped with a roasting date about 10 days earlier. I suppose there are ways you can get a fresher roast ordering direct from the roaster and so on, but 10 days seems pretty reasonable to me. The beans were a light-to-medium roast and smelled gorgeous, earthy and rich. My every-morning routine has been to grind and brew a half pot of this with my drip coffeemaker. The fact that it is so low in acidity and bitterness means I can brew it a little stronger than I might with other beans to boost the caffeine and the delicious flavor. This coffee makes a really nice espresso as well, for whatever reason it gives the most incredible crema of any bean I've put through my little Gaggia machine -- the result is almost like the head on a stout ale.All in all a unique and wonderful bean I am going to buy a lot more of! 5Pleasant earthy beans, low acidity, but it lacks a certain interest on its own - blend it with brighter beans! It's so hard to describe tastes, how do I write a helpful review? I like to grind my own coffee right before brewing and I use a french press every day and when I'm lazy and also like to make Turkish coffee on special occasions for 1 or 2 friends or just myself.I like dark (but not too dark, not bitter) earthy brews - I usually steer away from "bright acidity" and "fruity" beans (though when I tastes those I can still tell if it's good coffee or not). I drink my coffee with sugar, but no milk (except sometimes when I'm in the mood). I also don't like overly dark, skunky or burnt coffee. I really don't care about how much caffeine is in the beans, but if you must know the darker roasts have less caffeine remaining, even though they may taste "stronger" :0)Just for reference: I like Peet's "Major Dickason blend" and Starbucks "Verona" blend and Espresso roast, they're not the "best", but indicative of what I'm going for. But I really don't like what Starbucks puts in their cups, which everyone carries like they're wearing a uniform.Anyway, I bought a 5 lb. bag of these Brazilian Santos and also a dark version. I like the dark a little better, but they both taste like versions of itself and are very good, well rounded, solid beans. I ordered these because I can't really find Brazilian beans anywhere locally and also because I like their low acidity.But these beans on their own don't really produce the most complex (or "interesting") cup - I use these to mix with certain more assertive coffees I got from Costco, to stretch them out and breathe a little more interest. I think they're ideal for that, because they're good enough where they don't take away flavor, but neutral enough not to take over the flavor.I don't regret buying these and Coffee Bean Direct is a great deal, but I will try another kind next time - I usually only come back to exceptional brews and I only just discovered CBD, so there's more to try.Perhaps, if I owned a coffee shop or a pastry shop or cafe, I would use these (and their darker version) because it seems like the coffee that would please everyone. This is some of the best coffee I've every had. I'm very picky about my coffee and very rarely drink coffee that I didn't make myself so I'm always looking at new coffee machines and coffee and I think I've finally found my nirvana, this coffee and my Bunn caf coffee machine. I've only had coffee this good before when my grandson was in the hospital and I would go to the coffee cart and they had Columbian Supremo. It made sitting in the hospital a little bit easier. We are liking it so much that I have to change my subscribe and save to earlier than expected. If they ever change this I don't know what I'll do because it is fabulous.Well, it's changed. It is not near as good as it was even though the price has steadily been going up. This is the second delivery that has not been good at all. I really should send it back and I'm really not sure if I will but at any rate it is not as good as it was. I contacted the company directly and they basically told me that they have no control over what Amazon does with the coffee after it's delivered to them. I'm thinking that they have too much in stock and it is being stored wrong because now it basically tastes rancid. I'm really bummed because I've really been used to great coffee for about a year and now I have to look for great coffee again. 3The honest truth from an honest coffee "snob".If you're like me, then you understand that for coffee to truly be appreciated, it needs to be drinkable black. The flavor, aroma, and color are all part of the experience. A good coffee will taste good without the masking of cream and sugar. Generally speaking, I drink about a pot of coffee a day, but $14-$20 for 12 ounces of coffee breaks the bank. Counter culture, Intelligentsia, and Larry's Beans (A relatively small roaster from Raleigh NC) are my top choices.As a grad student who does not have time to work, when I saw the opportunity to purchase five pounds of Penny Pincher's Light Roast at $30.00, I figured why not. I saw the reviews for the company and they set the bar very high for my expectations.As soon as I got it, I threw some beans into my conical burr grinder, and then made a pot. The final product, which is what I am drinking now, in all honesty lies within the absolute middle of the range. In the bottom of the range are brands like Folgers and Maxwell house. The top of the range, the brands listed above.So, what does this mean? I am sitting here currently sipping a cup of hot, black coffee, and I am able to do so without wanting to spit it out. The smell wont take you to heaven, but it does not displease. I love the caffeine from a light roast, its got punch, and the coffee only has a very slight burnt (weird for a light roast) taste. However, the biggest difference, and the most important one, is that is does not have the disgusting chemical taste that you find in most large chain grocery store, massed produced coffee.I have five pounds of this to get through, and honestly, I think I will be able to do so with ease. It is already starting to grow on me, and I believe it could grow on you too. This is definitely the best coffee I have ever had for the price.3Must be an error... Seller is fine -- delivered on time, good packaging etc -- but honestly this coffee is awful. We have been buying nothing but Costa Rican Tarrazu from Amazon for several years and there are several sellers who put out very similar product -- each indistinguishable from the other. This bag of coffee is thin and acidic and tastes like the pre-ground coffee from the metal cans in the supermarket. Please have a look at your supply chain and investigate how this product was roasted and bagged as Tarrazu. It is so bad that there must have been an error. This stuff is going into the garbage. 1
