Customer Reviews

Poorly made. This was to be used as a spare blanket for guests. When it arrived, it was stiff with some sort of waxy residue and smelled like cigarettes and cigars. I washed it gently in cold as per the label instructions, and when I went to pu it into the drier, I noted that one side, which had been loosely stitched, had begun to unravel. After a round of gentle low heat drying, there was fiber everywhere. Not only did it fill the lint trap, but it spilled onto the floor of the laundry room and then into the kitchen. I ve been picking up fuzzy blots for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the weave of the blanket has become thinner or more apparent. After a single wash. I have no confidence in the longevity of this item. 1The appearance was great, but the quality does not match I bought two. The size difference between the two was significant despite being identified as the same size. Unfortunately, they are pilly and shed considerably. The appearance was great, but the quality does not match. 1Larger than usualI ordered a couple of these to keep in our rigs for emergencies. We're on the wet side of WA state and wool rules for keeping warm when wet. I'm a big guy (6' and 225lbs) and the blanket covers me completely. It's not too sctatchy and holds in the heat nicely. I'd bet the comfort of being able to wrap up and have my feet AND head covered will be worth the extra pound of weight on the off chance that I do ever carry it in an emergency situation. I haven't noticed a "chemical" smell, but it does smell like wool (go figure...). When the time comes to wash it, I'll be sure to use McNetts Wool Wash and do the deed in the bathtub, rather than a washing machine. I plan on buying two more of these when they become available for relatives to have on hand. Being cold sucks. A good wool blanket makes it suck a little less.5Great all around cold weather blanket... you can get the smell out fast. Lets be clear. This is a top layer blanket for cold nights. you should have a sheet under it because it is scratchy. It is a wool mix. It needs to air out the what I assume is the fire retardant formula that smells terrible. So air it out for a few days in your basement or in a room you don't frequent as often. It simply will stink for a few days. I even shot it with a little fabreeze. I have two of these bad boys. They simply work. I live in a colder environment and I use these when hanging out in the basement watching TV. On average my basement is in the 45 - 55 degree range when I don't run the heater. By far the best blankets for the cold. I have used them camping and didn't worry about being too close to the fire or getting them dirty. Not much can ruin these blankets and compared to full Wool blankets they are hands down the better option based on price alone. 4 stars because they do smell. You'll get over it especially if you get stuck in a snow storm and have to be huddled up in the back seat wrapped in it (Keep it in your car after you get the odor out) 4Not as pictured, stinky, and they shed horrible. But they are soft These blankets are only good in certain situations. First of all the photo is deceiving. It is of a premium blanket with a similar color, as pointed out by another reviewer. Second, believe all the other reviews that say these blankets smell like petrochemicals. I have washed and dried them no fewer than fifteen times and it might be slightly less, but still overpowering. Third, they shed more than the worst shedding dog. For the first few times putting it through the washer and dryer you have to empty the lint filter several times. But the shedding doesn't stop! I bought these for a camping trip and when it was over washed and dried and put away the blankets in the linen closet. My son was theilled to find them and curled up on the white couch with one. It shed all over the couch and made tumble weeds of wooly fluff on the floor. I had to vacuum after just having the blanket out for a couple hours. For our camping trip I used one as a mattress pad on an inflatable bed and sandwiched the other two between two top sheets to avoid breathing in petrochemical smells and fuzzy lint. Used in that method they kept up really comfy when it was super windy and near freezing. But I'll never use them in my house again. 3but I wouldn't describe it as bad. I would have no problem using the blanket ... This blanket is fabulous! It is surprisingly heavy too! Some people have complained about the chemical smell on it, but I decided to roll the dice anyways. It does have a distinct smell, but I wouldn't describe it as bad. I would have no problem using the blanket fresh out of the packaging without washing it (as far as the smell goes). You cant smell it unless the blanket is right up to your face. I was not sure what to expect as far as comfort goes, but I dont have any complaints! I wouldn't say its the most comfortable blanket ive ever used, but I definitly would not be urcomfro to use it for a nights sleep. It is a very warm blanket and I am very happy with the purpose! I bought it to keep in my car in case of emergency, and it serves that purpose very well! 5Decent Quality wool blanket. I ordered a couple of these wool blankets so to make wool shirts out of them. The blanket is of decent quality and weight and I was able to create a very nice hoodie with one of them. Also, I thought that the blanket would be thicker, and since it was a bit thin I chose to add a mid weight fleece layer to fortify my garment.Lastly, I soon realized, during construction of my hoodie that the blanket sheds tiny fibers that bothers my eyes. So, though it is as warm as any coat that I have purchased in the past, I will not be able to wear because of eye irritation. 3If your on the fence...spend the $25 Alright, here are the essential answers I was hoping for when I was looking for outdoor bedding. My needs were for extended weekend camping with my car near by...I would call it Base Camp needs. Weight is heavy and not what I would want for trekking. The blanket was the largest I could find at a reasonable price. When you open the sealed plastic packaging the retardant smell is subtle but after an hour will fill the room and is annoying. That smell reminds me of musty wool however the blanket is NOT wet, dirty or otherwise anything but brand new. Like another reviewer I washed the blanket twice on cold, gentle cycle. Taking the blanket outside I shook out the "pilling" between washes and then again after the 2nd wash. The dryer was never used as I simply hung the blanket over a radiator when finished. By adding fabric softener the smell was 99% gone and my wife (who is not particularly sensitive) didn't find it offensive. After the blanket dried overnight the finished dimensions were 65-1/4" x 91-1/4". The final weight on a kitchen scale is 3lb 5.3oz. In other words it held its sizing and weight just fine. The blanket is bound on all 4 sides with what appears to be heavy stitching. I see no need spending time at a sewing machine to strengthen these seams. In addition, the wool takes on less water than you might expect. Removing the blanket after the spin cycle I felt mild dampness but nothing like a shirt or jeans coming out...this was a pleasant surprise and indicates high wool content. Some folks have asked what the remaining 20% of the content is and my understanding it's a mix of recycled wool content (think shop floor if you really get down to it) and man made material for strength. It's clearly a heavy duty blanket. To say it's warm is an understatement. We use it as a thermal break under our sleeping bags with 2 of us in our Kelty 3 person 4-Season and it covers the floor entirely. If I were camping solo there would be no problem, at all, with using this under me and folded over for a cover. I'm M-L overall and that feature was important to me. My opinion is using it in this manner would allow a sleeper an extra 10-15 degrees of lower temps vs. going with a sleeping bag alone. By adding a Mylar blanket, this wool blanket and a bag rated to zero virtually anyone would be comfortable to 10 degrees or slightly lower (no telling exactly without considering wind and shadow).Final thought, now that I've handled the product I'll purchase 2 more (one for each car). Although the blanket looks good and feels soft it's still a military appearance (which might be cool for your needs) and that might not fly in the guest bdrm.EDIT: Update to 10-21-16. I ended up ordering and receiving 2 more of these. One for the camper and the other for the car trunk. In the Ohio River Valley the wind can build quickly and weather is notorious for changing without warning. More like a mountain environment than the pleasant sounding "Valley" would have you believe.Like my earlier comments suggested, the blanket is virtually bulletproof. I had to change 2 of our Honda 4-Wheeler tires out and the ground was soggy/muddy with temp in the 40's and a wet wind. By folding over and laying on the ground I could kneel in relative comfort to get the job done. More importantly, using some Woolite Cleaner with a mild scrub brush the darn blanket came 100% clean despite being ground into the soil. I'd guess there was some grease involved as well but regardless it all came out with hardly any effort. It is true that the other 2 blankets needed the same "prep" as the first. A double washing, a thorough shake thru outside and then a couple hours over the radiator. Also, the smell varies with each blanket received...the 2nd of these was considerable stronger than the 1st. Maybe it depends on the storage conditions. Either way, the blanket is still bound on all 4 sides, still tough as nails and generous (to say the least) with sizing. I didn't bother to measure but the amount it shrank through the Washer is negligible.Definitely a cold-weather god send IMHO. Pair it up with a Mylar blanket and it's the perfect base cloth inside the tent. Having camped in the same conditions year after year (after year...) and knowing the expected temperature range at night I did just as I've suggested. No doubt in my mind the comfort zone was extended another 10-15 degrees colder versus just a sleeping pad.Best to you...! 5Best blanket for the money. When I got the blanket I weighed it at 3.5 lbs. This blanket is big. The 66" b 90" is accurate per the product description. I am not sure if its truly 80% wool because the tag on the blanket did not say. It does feel like its 80%, its rough but It's not to itchy, I washed mine once to get rid of the smell and it also helped with the softness but it wasn't that bad to begin with. The tag says this blanket is fire retardant. I haven't tested this but it did come with a smell so I am assuming that's the stuff they put on the blanket to help keep it from burning. I did have it close to a fire while camping. I had this blanket wrapped around my face and it didn't bother me at all. I have been waiting to write this review because I haven't been camping and Well I finally got to put this wool blanket to the test. Went camping and it got down in the 30s but I only had a 40 degree bag so I used this to keep warm, it worked great, it kept me warm.5Not as warm as expected (low 50 F at best) For the price this is a fantastic blanket. Recently took this blanket up into the mountains of Arizona and the blanket was very nice till the temperatures dropped into the low 50s (fahrenheit) and by the time the temperature was in the mid 40s I had to put on extra layers to keep warm, which is something to keep in mind if you are buying this as a camping or emergency blanket. As for size it was large enough to use as a sleeping bag with spare room to double wrap my feet, and thats for a guy that is almost 6 foot tall and 250 pounds. I wish it was a bit fluffier which is part of what helps the fabric retain heat, but again for the price this is a fantastic blanket. 3Well worth the $25 price tag There are a lot of negative reviews on here about this blanket, but are they deserved? In a single word, no. I suppose it depends on what your intended use of it is, but it isn't bad by any means. I've used it for the floor of a tent while camping and I've used for moving large objects. In those situations, it works great. In my eyes, that's what these blankets are really meant for. They're durable and will take a beating. This isn't the type of blanket you'd want to put on your bed and sleep with every night. Sure, it will keep you warm and if you needed it, this blanket would do the job, but it's much better suited for the outdoors and situations you wouldn't want to sacrifice a nicer blanket in.Oh, and the smell. People keep mentioning the smell of this blanket. I'll admit, it does smell a bit like gasoline, but it's not the strong, overpowering smell that people have described in these reviews. Just to compare, I've got an expensive Pendleton wool blanket and it also has a similar smell. It's partly a wool blanket thing, and it's partly the smell of this wool blanket, in particular, being that it's cheaper and fire-retardant. Again, you're probably not going to love this blanket on your bed, but anywhere else it's not an issue and I never noticed the smell even in a small tent. It's only present if you put your face up to it and take a whiff. Maybe some are smellier than others, but then again maybe others have overexaggerated their experience or have a more delicate sense of smell. Either way, it's been a great purchase for my intended use. 5You, Will Not Over My Eyes Pull Thee Wool While the lint was far more than expected, the blanket went through two washes and one delicate dry. I show the pictures of the lint not to scare anybody away, but to prepare one for when it's first washed. The other two pictures are after washing it. The big pieces were pulled out of the dryer screen and the smaller pieces came from both the washer and drier. The petroleum smell when I first got this item was not nearly as pronounced as described in other reviews, and by the time the blanket was washed and dried, I only noticed the smell was still barely there because I knew it came with a slight odor and was looking for one after washing. I could have used a dryer sheet and probably not even noticed any smell. The blanket seems to be of really good quality and is a bit fluffier after being laundered. While it is not flannel, it is relatively soft and not scratchy. After laundering there was no pilling and the stitching around the border is still in place. I have not used it a lot, so I cannot give it 5 stars yet. For the price and apparent quality, I would purchase again.I paid full pop for this item, so you have my fully biased opinion. 4
