Keeps pet out of rooms but allows air to circulate in and out, also can work for kids.We use this for doors that we want to keep open but keep the cats out of. It works great on cats and our now 2 year old nephew, I'm sure one day he'll be strong enough to break the thing but for right now it meets our needs. Our linen closet is in our bathroom and it seems that warm wet air get trapped in there after showers. I bought the door monkey to keep that door cracked open all the time because if we just left it open the cats would never leave the piles of blankets and towels... I'm not a fan of that. That door opens outwards so the "handle" part sits on the door, easy to use the latch button, and the hook part hooks to the door frame.It keeps the cats out of the linen closet and it also keeps the cats out of the bedroom if my nephew is sleeping in there. And if he wakes up without anyone knowing he has to call out for the door to be opened so he can't just wander around upstairs. So basically, this works great against cats for doors that you want to keep cracked open for air circulation. 5PLEASE MAKE THESE FOR BIGGER DOORS!Had these on my pantry door, bathroom door and my toddler s upstairs bedroom door in our previous home. What an amazing product it was and truly worth its weight in gold! I never had to worry about my baby falling down the stairs, climbing in my bed at night, or falling in the toilet. They are strong and never once unlatched or broke. So convenient, easy to put on or take off, and doesn t damage the door. We ve since moved to a new house with larger doors and these won t fit. Now I have a 4 yr old climbing in my bed every night and a 17 month old who can get into everything! I would honestly pay 50 bucks for one of these right now as I type this at 4am! Heeeeeelp!!! Please make these for thicker doors!! 5My 3 year old grabbed a chair and removed it!My 3 year kept going in the pantry and eating all kinds of stuff, including a big bag of marshmallows I bought to use on Christmas Day to make hot chocolate for my kids! This latch is easy to install but it s also very simple to remove! My 3 year tried to open the door the first day and seen she couldn t and gave me the stink eye, but she quickly figured out what it was! 2nd day I walk to the pantry door and there s a kitchen chair in front of it! Yup she got a chair and just took it right off! Oh and off course she hid it! I finally got her to tell me where it was hiding and have placed it back on! I have placed it slightly higher, I don t like it that high because it feels like if she tries pulls on the door too hard it can cause some damage to my door! We shall see I will update the progress in a couple weeks! I figure for now it s better than nothing at all! 2Door Monkey ReviewI have used this on my pantry and bathroom doors. I chose the Door Monkey because I have lever handles and like that it does not require any hardware or 'sticky' parts in order to work. I believe I have very standard door frames and molding.Pros:1. Ease of attachment/removal - no screws or sticky bits. It takes two seconds to attach once you realize how simple it is.2. Ease of use - Can be used from both sides of the door without removing it. Push the button or move the latch depending on which side of the door you are on.3. Pinch guard - My 18 month old hasn't been hurt after a few weeks of use.4. Effectiveness - He knows what is in the pantry. He wants it. He tries to open the door every so often by pulling the lever handle but it doesn't budge. I can keep the Door Monkey out of reach for many more years.5. Portability - I took it over to the grandparents house and it works on their internal doors.Cons:1. Door remains open 1/2-1 inches. This isn't convenient for my guest bathroom since the Door Monkey has to be removed to fully close the door.2. Visible - It is very obvious, even against a white door/door frame. This doesn't bother me - A lever door handle cover/child lock is very obvious. White flour and uncooked spaghetti all over the floor is also very obvious.5/5 rating because the Door Monkey is a great child lock for many of my internal doors and it is easy to install and use, makes no marks where it is installed, and is easily movable to other doors.Update 1/17/2012 - my now 27 month old son still doesn't get past the door monkey. I have 4 of them now and all are holding up very well.Update 12/16/2012 - One of my Door Monkeys wore out. It doesn't catch every time so I am guessing it is a worn out spring. 5Expensive but quite effectiveThese Door Monkeys are the kind of product you don't realize how much you need them until you no longer have them. Yeah, they seem overpriced for what they are, and yes, they do tend to break eventually. But if you have yard gremlins, curtain crawlers, rug rats running around the house, wreaking havoc in your master bedroom when you're not looking, unrolling all the TP in your bathroom and throwing your remotes in to the toilet, you'll come to realize not having something like these Door Monkeys isn't an option.One tip: If yours broke in the same way a couple of ours have, where the spring which helps it grip the door no longer works, there's an easy, cheap fix: Search on Home Depot "3m 3/4 in. x 22 ft. Temflex Rubber Splicing Tape", (they sell it in-store as well), cut off a piece, give it a stretch and simply wrap one of the ends until it fits your door snuggly to extend the life of your Door Monkey (see pictures). The tape only cost $2.50, the roll last forever and has many other uses so it's a nice thing to have around the house. Our Door Monkey broke 6 months ago and my jerry-rig fix is still holding strong. 4$13 changed my life!! WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME ABOUT THIS PRODUCT SOONER?! My 4 year old has been repeatedly coming out of his room at bedtime and it s exhausting to stay upstairs and repeat go lay down when you just want to go downstairs and eat dinner. We use the door monkey just until he falls asleep and then it comes off for the night. We also still have a monitor in his room so I can watch him and come back if I need to. The first night even though I explained it before I left his room, he got up and tried to open the door. See video . He quickly gave up and decided to sit and read books until he apparently got tired enough to crawl into bed and go to sleep. Incredible!! Not one tear shed either. Ridiculously easy to install and take off. 5Great idea but poor designI ordered this because I wanted a way to keep my 2 year old son out of his baby sister's room without completely closing the door. The baby gate I had in the doorway is no longer working because he climbs over it, and I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a fancier, taller gate. Plus, I liked the idea of being able to close the door most of the way, but still be able to peek in. I was extremely disapointed to find that this product is not compatible with my door. I live in a new (2015) house so I would think my doors/framing are as "standard" as they come but the door monkey is not long enough to catch on the door frame. The picture I took shows as far closed as I was able to get it. A simple design modification that allows you to adjust the shaft length would sure be great. Unfortunately, I am going to have to return the door monkey and look for something else. 2Very smart product!I haven't had this long, but I'm very impressed with it so far. A lot has already been written about this product, so I'll focus on some points that haven't really been said...YES, THE PRICE SEEMS HIGHIt's true that the cost is higher than what you would expect. I was at first hesitant ordering it for that reason. But nothing else was working so I decided to give it a try. I'm actually ok with the cost now. Not only is it a good product, but if you go to the Door Monkey website you'll find that a dad invented this product to solve a problem he was having. It's just a little mom and pop company. I'm sure that they've had to invest a lot of personal money into this, take risks, and don't get the manufacturing deals that big companies do. It's nice to support the little guy. Besides, it's a lot cheaper to buy one thing that works rather than a bunch of junk that doesn't.LOTS OF OTHER SOLUTIONS DON'T WORK FOR EVERYONEFirst we tried the knob cover. My daughter figured out how to open it in a day and the next day she busted the cover right off the knob. My huband decided to get smart and take the knob off one day and guess who ended up getting locked in....ME! This product actually works, is very secure, and an adult or older child can open the door from both sides. No lock-ins.YES, THE DOOR STAYS CRACKED OPENThere is a good sized gap when you use this. I'd prefer it to not be there, but it's really no big deal for me. It's on my daughter's bedroom. She still slept fine with the door cracked. If you use it on a bathroom it takes two seconds to remove and put back. You have to think about how it works though. It basically clamps to the door and an arm grabs onto the doorframe when you close it. Because it clamps, that clamp keeps the door slightly ajar. If you had another kind of lock you'd probably have to tape or drill into your door or frame. This product doesn't leave any damage and you can move it around to different doors or take it to grandma's house for the weekend. This design also allows you to open it from both sides. You don't want to do something stupid and get locked in like I did. For the benefits of the design, I'll deal with the crack.UNIQUEI don't know of another device like this...opens from both sides, portable, works on most doors, and my child can't get through it. I'll update my review if she finds a way, but I don't think that will happen.GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICEI did email the company with a few questions. They were very nice, helpful, and quick to respond. If you have a funky door you might want to contact them or at least read more info on their website before ordering. Watch it and you'll know exactly what you're getting. 5Toddler stays in room!Our entire family was suffering from the control our 2 year old had on us. She was constantly getting out of bed during the night. She refused to stay in her bed. My husband was adiment that she was not sleeping with us. I tried everything from sticker charts to the supernanny method. Nothing was successful. I reached out to a friend, and she said she had used the door monkey. I did some research and though I was a little hesitant, I purchased 3 of them!Judge if you must. But it has worked. The day they came in, we went over the process with her of how it would work. We would go through the normal bedtime routine. Once it was time to get in bed, we would put the door monkey in place. We would be able to see her on the monitor, but we would not speak to her. When the cow wakes up (she has a wakeup clock in her room), we would come and take the door monkey off. It would only be used at nighttime. Once she can go to bed and stay in bed, we would take it off.The first night she screamed, yelled, pulled. But, she wasn't able to get out of her room. She could see through the opening it created, but could not leave the room. It took her 12 minutes, but she then crawled in her bed and went to sleep. The second night, she screamed for 3 minutes. I realize it is not the intended use of this product, but it worked for us.I am sure there are some who consider this appalling, and I am ok with that. She had been confined to a crib before we transitioned her to a toddler bed, but no one ever questioned that!I just know that this product worked for our house. Thank you. 5Incredible! It saved my sanity... literally!!!I read the reviews and was skeptical of this little plastic thing at first to be very honest with you. However, we used these to sleep train our 2 1/2 year old twin boys who all of a sudden stopped sleeping through the night. They are in separate rooms. We used this door monkey in conjunction with the "Ok to Wake Owl". I showed them how it worked and told them they would decide whether the door monkey was put on. The first night they didn't want it on the door and the rule was that if they opened their door before Owl woke them up in the morning, we had to put door monkey on. Of course they opened their door so up went door monkey. A quick kiss and back in bed. Of course they got out, tried to open the door, cried. After 8 minutes of this they basically gave up, got in their bed and stayed there and went to sleep. Now it is part of their sleep routine, they ask for "door monkey", we put it on and it gives them comfort knowing its there. I am not sure if I am happy or pissed that I waited 3 months (of tortured 3 hour bed time routine with NO life for me). So basically a door monkey and a light up Owl sleep trained my kids. Incredible!!! 5
