Customer Reviews

Defective or Refurbished? Not a quality product, for sure! I have worked with wood, metals and different tools for years. Sharpened all my tools with old Craftsman wetstone. Decided on DMT Dia-Sharp to upgrade.Bought two stones from Amazon: coarse and extra-fine, 11 1/2 in.Delivery was fast, while packaging was very loose in a much bigger box. But the merchandise seemed to be OK due to good factory packaging. Now to the product review:It was well below expectations. Like the previous reviewer I really do think I was "treated" by DMT with a factory seconds on both stones. The diamond coating was not even. Well, one can live with that. But the edges of both stones had some bumps and did not have even surface. That was a problem. Your center of the stone works just fine, while edges put burrs on the blade! On the top of that, the extra-fine stone had some tiny but deep scratches on the surface, looked like somebody scratched a block of tin with a knife. On a NEW stone? Steel coated with diands? How and who did it? And that's a NEW product?Once again: I'm not your Emeril trying to sharpen my Santoku knife very first time in my life. I've been working with tools for 30+ years and can tell the difference between quality and junk.Long story short: I'm sending both stones back. For a total of $125+ I expected a quality product; got junk instead.(I'm sure after Amazon returns my stones to manufacturer (DMT), they'll repackage it and sell it to you - yes you, the reader - the next buyer of the sub-par product by DMT.)But who knows - if it is your lucky day, maybe you'll pick a good, evenly coated, evenly edged stone? Who knows... good luck with DMT anyways! 1SHARP! Sharp price on Amazon for a great whetstone. Fantastic! Firstly thanks to Amazon for excellent purchase experience and excellent price. In fact the best price I could find anywhere online after searching for many days. 5 Stars to Amazon and 4 stars to the DMT factory for a good product. The good bits:*perfectly flat*large (huge in fact)*heavy and stable*Excellent for maintaining a sharp edge on tools*Excellent (or the best) for preliminary Cooks kitchen Knives honing*For smooth grading of very expensive natural Japanese Karasu, Nakayama etc whetstones*Perfect to be used just before taking the tool to the finishing hones on 0.3 Micron paper or Japanese Natural Shoubu, hard Nakayama like Karasu etc.I like the size and weight of the stone. It is WONDERFUL. It is good choice for grading the more expensive natural Japanese waterstones because it leaves a smooth ready to use polishing surface. For more severe correction perhaps a coarser grit is useful but I personally find it is not necessary for a well maintained surface. Please remember to wash after every use, otherwise the iron filings rust and leave ugly spots. I recommend just water and not soap. Soap makes it slippery and while working with sharp tools you want good grip and control and safety. Do not apply pressure. Use it lightly, almost like a caress; as if stroking a pet!!Bad bits:*The quality is very good but long bedding in period and some 'spots' which can be felt on surface) so only 4 stars!*NO OTHER FAULTS!I highly recommend this DMT whetstone in the Fine and Extra Fine. It is a fantastic honing tool. However, if you are planning to buy it expecting extremely fine (mirror like) surface finish then you are in for a shock. It wont do that. As it does not compare to HARDER natural whetstones from Shoubu, Nakayama mountains etc. DMT is a less effective cheaper alternative to the previous two for a razor finish. Thanks for reading. 4Nice after a good dressing,,, As received this stone was awful. There were lots of extra diamond bits adhering to the surface, so it just gouged up the edge of the first knife that I tried. I ran an X-acto chisel blade carefully across the whole surface and knocked off much of the taller chunks. It still cut too aggressively and chewed up edges. I got sort of mad at that point, and took an old bench stone to it under running water. It worked! This plate is now my favorite stone. It cuts cleanly and smoothly, and the large size is pure luxury!I have since used this same trick on various other diamond plate sharpeners. It has improved every one of them. I use the fine side of an old 2 sided 8"x2" stone (probably a very old Sears model). It is similar to the dressing stone used by Tormec, if you are familiar with that contraption. It does not take a lot of force, and the running water helps to wash away the loose bits and prevent gouging the plate. This should not be necessary. The manufacturer should be doing a final dressing/lapping of this stone. I suspect that cost cutting took out a couple of steps too many from the manufacturing process.A personal observation: these diamond stones cut more aggressively than old school whetstones, so an extra fine seems equivalent to an old fine stone. 3Good tool but be aware of contaminated surface Unlike the D11F I purchased at the same time the surface of the extra fine was contaminated with stray shards of medium or course diamond that would gouge the edge of a tool being finished requiring a return to the fine stone. Once notched away (engraver to knock off the individual contaminated spaces) stone works great. 3don't start with a good tool. Why Prior reviews are correct in that surface does need to "break" in, don't start with a good tool. Why ? At this price you would think they could fix that. After break in there are faint plate surface milling marks visible under the diamond coating so at 1500 grit these milling actually raise the diamond surface a fraction but that said it does seem to work. Somewhat disappointed . 3best to use cheaper blades on it first Surface needs a little "breaking in", best to use cheaper blades on it first. Little rubber pads for the bottom work great don't need a stand for it. 5Works great Nice plates! The extea length really helps on larger knives. Buy some rubber stickers to glue on the bottom to keep it from sliding around on your bench. 5DiaSharp continuous stones - Fine I have used a DMT DiaSharp fine grit 6" continuous stone for 5 yrs or more. I recently bought two more, an 11" xtra-fine from Amazon and an xtra-xtra fine from somewhere else. A long time ago I bought the kind with the holes in it, the non-continuous surface. Not even close. Not nearly as good. You definitely want the continuous surface. Much more money, and definitely worth it.And all I had to work with up to this point is the DMT fine grit 6" stone. After years and years of use it still works very well.I was totally amped about receiving the larger and finer stones. Well, I am sending them both back for replacements. I read reviews here about DMT continuous stones having bumpy and irregular surfaces, and I couldn't believe it. I do now. I guess it's the classic - DMT is trying to maximize profit by eithera) selling off "seconds" to unknowing customers, orb) manufacturing with cheap labor or a less controlled process. Both of the stones I recently purchased are nowhere near the quality of the stone I bought about 8 years ago. The old fine stone is smaller (6") but has a perfectly uniform grit. When you pass a blade over it there is no detectable roughness or bumpiness, other than the constant friction of the grit. The new stones feel like someone misted hot solder on them. (Exaggerrated, yes.) There are bumps and irregularities everywhere. Hopefully when I send it back they will realize I know what I'm talking about and send me a "first quality" version. If I am wrong about there being an "A LIST" version of the product, then that really sucks, because these are of no use to me. If the next stone is the same poor quality, I will try one more option - going to the smaller 6" size like the old one I have. 5Leaves a great edge. I like the 11.5 set for sharpening chisels and plane irons. This one has what seem to be ripples, although they don t effect anything in sharpening. 4DMT Scores again I have four grades of DMT surfaces and they are my "go to" sharpening abrasive. Early on, when I made my first purchase of a DMT product, I was using it improperly. I sent it back. DMT replaced it and sent me several smaller products with a hand written note telling me what I was doing it wrong (bearing down too hard). They went way beyond any expectation of good service and really do have great products. Just take it easy and let the diamonds do the cutting. 5
