Customer Reviews

Must have for any daysailerWhen I bought my sailboat the old tiller handler was broken. So I replaced it with this and It does the job well. I did have to order and install two mini clamcleats for it but it was worth the effort. I can finally sail without having to hold the tiller the entire time. 5Great for Singlehanded Sailing !What a nifty tool! I have it installed on my Johnson X-Boat and also on my Flying Scot sailing dinghy. It was really easy to install, and works really well. It is particularly useful when singlehanding the boat and you have a need to set the rudder while you adjust sails away from the cockpit, or when you are setting a Spinnaker. It works REALLY Well. Neat product. Not very expensive, either. 5Works well in taming the tillerWorks well. Although, I needed longer line - so had to switch out the line.Although this isn't not (obviously) an auto-tiller, it is does make tiller work much easier. I have used it a few times already and with a steady wind, I am able to sit back and take my hands off the tiller. When I trim it and the sails just right, it's great for 10+ minutes. Look Ma, no hands. Great for single-handed boating. 5Fantastic addition to our tiller! We sailed with our new Davis Tiller Tamer for the first time the other day. One of our jib sheets came untied from the jib so I had to go forward to re-secure it. I simply held the tiller in place briefly to see that we were on a steady course, tightened the knob you see in the picture and ran forward to reattach the line. I returned to the cockpit with us still on course. It can be mounted on top or on the underside of the tiller. Our lines connect to a pair of clamcleats on the stern coaming. Each line runs at about 45 degrees from the tiller, 90 degrees between the lines. 5Essential for crewless sailingEasy to install with easy to follow installation directions. It s not an autopilot system. Just holds the tiller straight while you can tend to the sails. 5It worksDoes exactly what it is supposed to do. But now that it is installed, I can see how people would prefer the cam type locking mechanism as opposed to the screw clamp one. If I need to lock down my tiller quickly, too bad, still gotta deal with the knob. That said, it's not so bad that I'm going to replace it 3Does work but not as stout as I'd like. This tiller tamer (tiller minder) was put to work on my Starwind 21 sailboat. It works reasonably well in a light wind. I had expected it to hold the tiller in place in order to allow me to relax and trim the sails as needed, but it will slip -it just isn't quite stout enough for the task. It DOES help which is why I still use it and keep the three stars. A thicker line helped, but the fact of the matter is that it just isn't quite as sturdy as I'd have preferred. It is possible that I'm expecting too much. I used one like this years ago on another boat which is why I purchased this one. 3some tech detailsLike most other reviewers, I am trying to sail a small boat single handed, and sometimes life gets complex. I have tried several home designed solutions, all helped, none did as much as I hoped, so I finally shelled out the money for this one. This one works very well. The product itself is well made. Reviews here about flimsy material don't match the product I received. Mine is made of hard durable plastic and stainless steel. If I hit it hard with a hammer or bounced it on concrete I could probably break it, normal wear and tear, not so much. The actual cord that comes with it is about 7' long and is braided poly 1/4" line; generic stuff, not anything like sta-set.Some missing details: the installation sheet calls for it to be screwed on to the tiller at least 18" forward of the pivot point for the tiller. It also calls for the lines to be attached to the back of the boat at about a 45 degree angle on each side from where the bracket gets mounted on the tiller, which works out to 18" on each side. Those are rough numbers, but it seems like that range will produce the best performance. My numbers are higher by a couple of inches, and it doesn't seem to have impacted operation. I think if you went under 18" and less than 45 degrees that will become less true. The instruction sheet calls for the two line ends to be secured to the fantail with CLAM (not CAM) cleats with fairleads, which will allow you to tension the line without fussing with knots. I started out fussing with knots and installed clamcleats later. While you can make the tiller tamer work without them, they make it much easier to do things like lock the tiller to one side when you are doing things like heaving-to.Overall, I am happy with the results. Dinghy sailing tends to involve beach launches and landings. Much easier to set the tiller, and paddle or drop or raise sail when you are not spinning in circles. 5Works well. This provides friction for a tiller with a mind of it's own. Essential for many small sailboats. HOWEVER, the plastic housing will become brittle if not shielded from the sun when not in use. Also, mount as instructed, paying attention to the 90 degree angle on the lines. Forget about contacting Davis if it breaks.... 4Worked perfectWorked as described ...... 2 day sailing adventureWas not a tiller fest as others in the group hadLolInstall with proper geometry and it s perfect 4
