Customer Reviews

Poor Writing QualityI purchased the Cross Classic Century Black Lacquer Fountain Pen with Fine Nib (AT0086-77FS). This is by far the nicest feeling pen I have ever owned. I loved everything about how this pen felt with the slim design, clean black and chrome look, and the feeling of twisting on/off the cap. The only place that this pen lacked was in writing. This pen wrote like a bold pen no matter the paper you wrote on. I tried different inks, writing techniques, adjusting the tines, and even professional are paper all the way down to basic copy paper. This pen either wrote very bold or bled into the paper and left those spiderweb like streaks on the writing line as you wrote and when compared to a five dollar disposable fountain pen, I preferred the five dollar pen for how it wrote (seeing to how it's a pen and only purpose is to write). I tried contacting Cross customer support with no avail as to if there was something I was doing wrong with the ink, the amount of pressure I wrote with, or whatever the case may have been.I tried very hard to like the pen and did as much research as I could on how i could fix my issues before finally returning it but just could not accept how it wrote in the end. Its to bad because the pen is the best feeling pen I've ever owned and I have to return it.Pictures attached are comparing this pen (Cross Classic Century Black Lacquer Fountain Pen with Fine Nib (AT0086-77FS)) and my main pen (Cross Click Gel Ink Pen, Pearlescent White (AT0625-3)).2Easily qualifies as one of the most beautiful fountain pens ...Easily qualifies as one of the most beautiful fountain pens in my collection , as well as one of the best writers . Everyone who sees it with he pure gold accents and nib immediately remark on what a beautiful writing instrument it is . Especially with is surprisingly svelte profile , uncommon to fountain pens . Since I got this pen I now find reasons to write things by hand just for the pleasure of using it . It would be a plus ,however it it came supplied with a converter to draw ink . Although the performance using Cross cartridges is entirely flawless. A sensational personal writer or superb economically priced graduation gift . If you are a fountain pen aficionado this instrument is a must have acquisition !5Shame on CrossHaving a long relationship with Cross pens and pencils, I have always held them in high esteem as a maker of quality writing instruments. After they moved their manufacturing facilities to China, I assumed they would maintain this tradition, but upon receiving this particular pen, I was shocked at how shoddy it was. The barrel was made from a thin piece of metal that felt about as solid as a thin tin can, and when the two halves of the pen screwed together, the metal-against-metal union did not join together smoothly; in fact, it squealed. The asking price is $56.00, with a supposed original asking price of $70.00. Are they kidding? In my opinion, it is not even worth $5.00, so I am sending it back immediately. Sorry, Cross, but when the quality goes bye-bye, so do I.1Smoothest ink flow, highest quality for the priceFor the medium nib fountain: Super smooth, no skipping, sleek and attractive. This pen is absolutely the best. All Cross pens are, from my experience. Compared to the King pen, which is nice, and the Zenzoi million dollar pen, which is nicer, this pen has a great solid feel and the NICEST, smoothest writing. Some of the other fountain pens are fun to look at and offer flashy cases, for unparalleled ease of writing and unsurpassed quality, Cross beats them all and is worth every dollar for a pen in the "under $100" range. Not having the opportunity to compare with a Waterman or Mont Blanc yet, this has pens in comparable price range beat hands down.5Reliable thus far. However the one I received is most likely a factory second. The pen I received is a great pen. I haven't had a fountain pen in some time and it was so nice to find one in a brand that I like that I could afford. It works perfectly and it looks good. However it is important to note that I think the one I received is a factory second even though the ad doesn't state this. One of the sets of milgrain lines on the lid is missing. After 6 months the lid no longer stays screwed on. Today I found it unscrewed in my purse. Some how the bottom unscrewed itself and the lid was still in the pen holder in my day planner. Luckily I found it before the stain inside my dooney and bourke purse became too big. Be careful with your pen.4A very handsome Cross Classic Century fountain pen in the manner of the ballpoint and pencilThe chrome Cross Classic Century fountain pen is remarkably compact in that it is about the diameter and length of the traditional Classic Century ballpoint pen. The bottom of the capped pen appears to be a small sculptured bob, but it is actually a thread onto which the cap may be screwed when the pen is in use. This pen ONLY takes Cross slim cartridges (in blue, blue-black or black) and they are pretty small. (Neither of the Cross converters is slim enough to fit this pen.) The stainless tip is a smooth writer right out of the box. The pen is made in China rather than in Rhode Island but it still comes with the lifetime warranty. If you like classic Cross you will love this handsome pen.5Beautiful but ink is too broad, not Fine at allLove the design, weight and feel of the fountain pen itself - that subtle matt texture of the body contrasting with the smooth glossy cool touch of the grip. My only dissatisfaction is that, considering this is supposed to be a FINE nib, the ink on paper feels too broad compared to the slender silhouette of the pen. What I mean by this is that for a slim pen like this, you'd expect an equally elegant fine line, but alas no - the ink comes out in broad wet strokes as though you were writing with a cheap plastic pen. It's a real shame because I really do love the design of the pen. Wish there was an EF version!3Fine point fountain writes broad and wet. This review is for the Cross Classic Century, Classic Black, Fountain Pen with Stainless Steel Nib - Fine (AT0086-79FF) It is sad that all cross pens are grouped together in this review section. Anyway, for the fountain pen people out there like me, I just want to say this pen writes WET. It is so wet in fact that it is guaranteed to bleed through whatever you write on. Notice the black ink bleed through dots on the sample from where a top sheet was bled through to the next. Also because of how wet it writes the nib may be considered a "fine" but writes "Broad". I like a fine point nib to write a fine point line. Only good for signatures, not everyday writing. It is a beautiful pen to look at and writes very smoothly.3Very nice pen.Long time ago I was a big fan of pens, specially fountain pens. I had the four pieces of Mont Blanc black gold, (fountain pen, ballpoint, rollerball and mechanical pencil) and some from Parker and Sheaffer. I finished some years ago to offer all of them to my sons. After some time using cheap rollingballs (those I prefer now) I decided to buy a good one. After some research I decided to buy a Cross which I always liked and admired for the beatiful design. Finally I bought this one. Some reviewers complains about the quality but I don't agree. I find this pen excellent with a very nice writing, well built and as all the Cross pens with a fantastic design. This is doubtless a 5 star pen highly recommended with a high ratio quality/price.5Excellent pen, made in China. This pen is the fountain pen version of the age old Cross Century ballpoint pen, a staple among professionals for years. The pen is supposed to be thin, just like all the other Century pens. If you are looking for a pen with more girth, try the Century II or the Townsend. I bought this pen because my grandfather swore by his Cross Century, which I now own, however I prefer fountain pens. It is exactly what I wanted: Sleek, silver, and precise with the unmistakable Cross design. I ordered a fine nib, which I found out writes more like a medium nib - this is no problem, I'd much rather have a wet nib than a dry, temperamental one. Also, be wary of AT Cross Blue/Black ink, it is quite watery and while it dries quickly, it has a tendency to bleed. The only reason I have given this product 4 stars is because it (or at least parts if it) was made in China - a disappointment for such an American icon.4
