Customer Reviews

Doing the right thing, one scrap at a time!I'm a teacher and talk a lot with my students about doing the right thing. I was feeling pretty guilty about throwing egg shells, coffee grounds, and table scraps out in the general garbage. So, I've had my little compost bin now for a week and I'm loving it. The real acid test came when we had a string of really hot days. With the charcoal filter neatly tucked inside the lid, you'd never know that this little, non-intrusive device harbored such smelly stuff. It is slightly smaller than a gallon jug of milk, so it doesn't take up a lot of counter space. I may only be throwing out a gallons-worth of scraps a week, but it's the right thing to do no matter how small. I intend to buy more as gifts so that friends and family can do the same. Collectively, we'll be doing our part one scrap at a time! 5This is a nice-looking countertop solution for kitchen waste destined for the compost pile or yard waste binThis is a nice-looking countertop solution for kitchen waste destined for the compost pile or yard waste bin. The white ceramic exterior is much heftier and nicer than expected, while the black plastic lid and green liner bucket are well constructed and easy to maintain. The design is cute and quite nice to have sitting out in your kitchen. The downside with the Chef'n design is mold. The holes in the lid are much smaller than other compost bins I've used, which makes it harder for moisture to escape. For instance, instead of the steam from my espresso grounds escaping through the filter and evaporating out of the bin, it tends to condense on the inside of the lid. This creates a perfect environment for mold to grow on the filter, so if I don't empty and clean the bin every couple of days it quickly becomes a science experiment. Our old bin for all its flaws never collected moisture, staying dry and mostly mold-free. I am going to try drilling larger holes to resolve the problem, but it does seem like this is a serious design flaw. 4Works WellI got this to replace a ceramic compost bin that over the years had gotten bumped and banged around enough that i had broken both the lid and the handle off. I looked at the steal options and they seemed to leak or rust. I liked this one because it is white ceramic like the one i was replacing, and looks nice on the counter in the kitchen. A friend even commented on my "cute" new compost bin. Inside is a green plastic bucket with handle that lifts out and is easy to dump into the compost outside. I like that the ceramic part stays safely inside thus hopefully extending it's life. The lid is plastic so less likely to break when it gets dropped. I also like that the sides slope outward, so the compost slides out easily. On my last counter compost bin the sides sloped inward and stuff always stuck in the bottom. 5Save the Planet!I recently signed up for a new composting service in my community. I purchased two of these countertop composters, one for home and one for work, so that I don't have to continually go out to my garage to the large compost pail. These are unobtrusive (actually kind of cute) and there is NO smell. I also purchased compostable bags so I don't have to clean these out. A couple of times a week, I simply remove the bags and place them in my large composter. They have a small footprint, but hold a lot. GREAT purchase! 5Great countertop compost bin! This is a well-constructed, nice-to-look-at compost bin for your countertop. The top has a replaceable filter underneath that keeps odors at bay, and a nice, leaf handle for lifting. Inside is a green pale with a stainless handle. Just lift and carry out to to your compost. Rinse, repeat! The outer crock only requires a rinse once in a while or a wipe down. It's a tad small for a family of five, especially if we've had water melon or corn, but most days its perfect. SO much better than the stinky, plastic one we had under the sink for years. We got dogs, and that had to change! 5Looks fantastic! Functions perfectlyThis countertop compost container not only looks super cool, it's designed well. The substantial ceramic outer bin is smooth and easy to keep clean. The inner bucket easily slips out for it's trip to the big compost bin. The lid fits perfectly. I'm so happy with this compost bin. It's expensive, but it's well made, pretty, and doesn't look like a garbage can. I struggled with rationalizing the cost. My granddaughter came into the kitchen yesterday and said "nice compost bin, Grandma!" I asked her how she knew it was a compost bin and she pointed to the little sprout. It announces it's purpose in a subtle, fun way. 5Worth the extra cash!!!So cute! And so discreet! We have had this for about three months now and have yet to change out the filter. I love how the green plastic insert can be cleaned out each time we dump out the compost. We empty this bin about once every four days and have absolutely no problem with fruit flies or other nasty creatures. We always get compliments on it. While this bin is a bit pricier than some of the other bins on Amazon, it is definitely worth the cute smell, discreet appearance, and high quality. I would absolutely recommend this bin! 5New lid does not fit properly and does not seatl the containerI purchased my first compost bin years ago. I was very happy with it, and bought a new one in November 2016 only because I broke the old one.The one I received appears to be a newer model. Unfortunately, the lid is either defective or the new design was not thought out and tested. The lid does not fit correctly like the old model, which fit over the white part perfectly. The lid I received today is too small to fit over the outer container (like the previous). It does fit the inner bucket, but when the inner bucket is inside the outer container the lid is pushed up and "floats" on top. It does not seal the container and is vulnerable to being knocked off. This happens due to two design flaws: 1) the edge on which it rests on the inner bucket is beneath the top of the outer container, forcing the lid to rest on top of the outer container instead of the bucket; and 2) because the outer container is a different shape than the bucket and lid.Bottom line: the lid is defective or poorly redesigned and prevents the bin from actually being sealed. I'm returning the product.I wish I'd kept the lid from the old one that I broke. 2Cute and Functional!I am fairly new to composting, and I was looking for something to keep my scraps in before taking them outside that wouldn't stink up my kitchen. This bin is absolutely perfect! I don't smell any rotting food ever, even when it's full. It is heavy and sturdy without taking up a lot of counter space. It's really cute, and I love that you can take just the inside bucket out. Super useful, practical and adorable! 5Works for meWe just started composting and needed a bin so we do not have to bring scraps out daily. Most countertop crocks were very "country" style. This one feels more modern but not too modern. So far it functions well. Not smellly. I like the size. It holds enough that we do not have to empty it more than once per week (2 person household). We do not use plastic liners. We do put a paper towel in the bottom of the bucket each time. Someone else noted that they like that they can open it with one hand. I agree. Very helpful as I often am holding a knife or food in my other hand. The one beef I have with this purchase is that it looked used when it arrived. The box was taped shut in a way that did not look like it had been done by the manufacturer. When I opened the box the black plastic lid was worn looking, one of the two included charcoal filters was not wrapped in plastic, and the edges of the green bin had black marks on it. The filter outside the bag looked new so I didn't hesitate to use it. I was able to wash off but the marks on the green bin so that worked out. The lid I can't do anything about, the finish is worn off in places so part of the lid looks shiny and part dull. Too busy that week to send it back and, while it is cute, I doubt anyone will look that closely at my compost bin. I do like and would recommend the product and I suspect the problem I encountered was not typical. 4
