Wastes coffee by inadequate infusionI returned this because of a defect in the grinder and purchased instead a Krups KM785D50, which is nearly identical. Except for two things:1. The Capresso has an easier-to-see, easier-to-use control panel than the Krups. But they're both kind of complicated and there's a learning curve; it's not that big a deal. But --2. As other reviewers have noted, the Capresso doesn't seem to wet the grounds very much. I would often complete the grind/brew cycle and find large areas of completely dry coffee. This seemed like a waste and made it difficult to get a strong brew. Before I returned the unit, I used to prevent this by waiting to insert the carafe until the brew cycle had soaked all the grounds in the filter. But that was just a workaround.The Krups unit, by contrast, operates like any other coffee-maker: the water soaks the grounds and filters slowly through to the carafe. Beats me why it's different, since the machines seem to be mechanically identical. Maybe it's in the electronics? At any rate, I much prefer the Krups in that regard. 3This is the best grind and brew on the marketThis is the best grind and brew on the market. I tried Krups and Cuisinart, both were far inferior to this model. I bought my first Capresso 5 or 6 years ago and bought a second recently to keep at a vacation house we bought. This model is designed so that the steam does not back up into the grind chamber. This is the most important design issue with grind and brews! Other models, like Cuisinart and Krups, have steam back up into the grind chamber, which requires daily cleaning of wet coffee grounds out of the grind chamber and the chute to the filter area. If you really want the best grind and brew on the market this is it. 5REPUTATION RUINEDI bought this Capresso to replace one that I had had for years - the bottom of it rusted out, but having had a good experience with it, I purchased a replacement. Unfortunately, for everyone, the new model only looks like the previous one. The plastic used in this newer version is not of the same quality - much thinner, almost flimsy. In addition - the top to the bean container does not close completely, the burner (a nice addition) makes the coffee in the glass carafe so hot that it is undrinkable without waiting for it to cool down. And today? Just putting the carafe back on the burner caused a crack and hole in the bottom of the carafe - result was coffee everywhere. It is sad when a company uses its well-earned reputation for making a quality product and then dumbs it down (no price decrease, of course) and tries to sell it as the same item. 1This is a bad productThe first Capresso 464.05 we bought was first rate and lasted for several years until it finished its useful life.We bought a second one, same model, that lasted around six months until the heating element in the bottom suddenly went bad. It made hot coffee but the warmer didn't work. We set it aside and bought a third Capresso the same model, on March 10, 2019.The 3rd Capresso lasted about three months before the warmer suddenly stopped working. In addition, the new machine ground too much coffee every day no matter how I tried to program it, and the coffee was always bitter.Not only that, we liked the original Capresso model and we assume the failure of the second coffee maker was an anomaly, so we paid for the insurance on the third maker. The company shipped our coffee maker and then refunded our credit card for the insurance indicating they no longer could ensure the quality of this model.It appears that at some point the company took a good product, changed manufacturers and lowered the quality to the point that the machine only lasts a few months. Requirements for returning a bad product are daunting ("has to be returned in the original box" etc). 1The Capresso 465 is a disappointment compared to the previous modelPreviously, I had the earlier version of the Capresso grind and brew coffeemaker. This model had a swing out filter basket and worked very well. I basically wore out two of them and had them refurbished by the factory. The last time the machine broke down. I was told that they would not repair it. I ordered the Capresso 465 coffee team as a replacement, and it has been a continual disappointment. If the valve on the filter basket isn't completely cleaned, and sometimes when it is, it will clog and coffee and grounds will run all over the counter. Another issue I had was with the grinder that is very reluctant to take in greasier beans, and I would only end up with about a tablespoon of grounds in the filter basket. This can sort of be solved by agitating the beans in the hopper as they are ground (stirring with my finger). This however is a known problem, and addressed in the instructions. Now, the Capresso is not completely emptying the water tank and I end up with only about a half a pot of coffee. Sadly, when it works, it really makes a pretty decent pot of coffee. It just occurs all too infrequently. I really like the convenience of being able to grind beans as I'm making the coffee, but this coffeemaker just isn't hacking it and will have to be replaced. 2As good as it gets (in grind&brew)I'm writing from the perspective of someone who has owned more grind&brew coffeemakers than the typical coffee addict. This one is as good a grind&brew machine as anyone makes.First, the negatives:- It is definitely loud and long in grinding, as other owners mention. The burr grinding process is wonderfully consistent compared to blade grinding, but it seems to take forever and the noise is enough to wake up the ... sleeping.- It doesn't have a way to dump out the unusued coffee beans if you want to change blends to another bean (though you can still put pre-ground coffee in the basket while there are beans waiting to be ground.)- The carafe does tend to make a sort of "cracking" sound when it sits on the hotplate sometimes.I have owned some of the most popular, and some unusual, grind & brew machines in the past 30+ years, including a very different Capresso long, long ago. There are some models/brands that only have a single grind possibility (no settings), some that require constant cleaning of parts, some that fall apart within the year and don't have even that much warranty, and one that was going to cost an extra $65 to replace the faulty super-recessed lid switch, which died after 4 months, without which it was totally unusable. There's only one of those previous coffeemakers that I'd buy again by choice, and they stopped making it over 20 years ago.This Capresso is well made, nicely packaged, and has all the features I want:- Fineness of grind is controlled with 5 possible settings- Amount of beans ground (from the hopper that holds approx. 2-3 pots of beans) is settable in 2-cup increments from 2 to 10 cups.- "Aroma" (i.e. darkness & flavor) is controlled with 3 settings, which in combination with other controls seems designed to yield every possible preference for "perfect" coffee.- It has automatic shut-off. (One of the much-lower-priced grind&brew machines doesn't have this feature, which I think should be mandatory on coffeemakers considering how many fires are started by overheating appliances.)- It has drip-trip, which is critical as I often don't want to wait for the full pot to brew before I take a cup in the morning.- It's completely programmable. Not only can you set a start time, but you can associate specific settings with the programmed time that are not the same as the current settings.Other pluses that are less quantifiable:- It doesn't seem to cause me to spill water all over the counter in filling it, like the last one I had. I have no idea what design elements affect this, I just know that it happens with some coffeemakers & not others.- It takes some parts in common with the other-brand grind&brew that I last had, which started leaking when brewing. The charcoal filters and basket, at the least, seem in common with many other brands.It cost quite a bit compared to some of the more popular models but, frankly, I'm convinced it's worth the extra investment.--------ADDED 11 MONTHS LATER:I had problems with my coffeemaker (not dripping, though the grinder was fine) just under a year from purchase. I contacted Capresso -- pay attention to their website advisory that Monday morning is the worst time to contact them! Despite the fact that I thought it was just past the warranty expiration, when actually it was just before the end-date, they were very helpful in getting it repaired at no charge, and they paid all shipping both ways.Two weeks later, I now have a like-new or new (I'm not sure which) coffeemaker. I have to admit that I had no idea just how hooked I was on the quality of coffee I can make so easily with the Capresso. But in the interim, everything else has been tasting like dishwater by comparison.I'm not only thrilled to have my coffeemaker back, but I'm happy to report that Capresso stands behind their products so amicably and thoroughly. 5All grind and brews are problematic - this Capresso has some nice featuresI have just ordered my second Capresso 464.05 -- in 18 months, hence the three stars. We have owned several blade grind Cuisinarts, 2 Krups (KM700 series) and the Capresso. It's been our experience that these machines, on the whole--regardless of manufacturer, are trouble prone and last about 2 years. But we love the coffee and the convenience so willing to put up with the expense.Pros of the Capresso - like the Krups, the grinder is not in the same compartment as the water so there is no residual steam to clog the grinder. Easy to clean and unlike the Cuisinart models, does not require daily cleaning. Glass carafe pours well, no drips. Keeps coffee hot. Low profile so it fits under our cabinets and does not produce steam (that was a big drawback of the Krups). I find it to be quieter than any blade grinder -- I don't know why people are surprised that grinding coffee beans is loud. Burr grinder works well and sets different grinds easily.Cons of the Capresso - doesn't handle oily beans as well and requires more cleaning as a result. Glass carafe has a divot in the handle that collects water in the dishwasher so one can get baptized if you don't remember to turn the pot over and drain the water when removing from dishwasher. Controls are a little confusing for the less tech savvy (like my spouse). Biggest complaint is that the heating element/thermostat died without warning after only 18 months. Doesn't seem to be easily fixable (we did replace heating element in one of our Krups).This time, I bought the extended warranty for a whopping $6.85. I'm sure we'll use it. I did look at buying the 487 Capresso which has an oily bean setting but the grinding mechanism was more complicated. With these machines, I feel the less complicated, the better. 3Made to break.My second one of these models just broke.First one lasted 15 months. Second one lasted 14 months. I estimate no more than 200 uses total per device.Will only outlast the warranty by days / weeks, but even if you decide to repair it under warranty, shipping will cost you half or more the original cost.When it breaks, it will flood everything on and below the counter in thick black concentrated coffee. Would love to send the company for the rug cleaning. I recognized the signs of catastrophic failure from the first time and intercepted the second time. No, this is not a rare occurrence, this will happen to you sooner rather than later.This device make excellent coffee when it works, early on. Unfortunately it is built to fail. 1I WAS a satisfied, 11+ year owner of a Capresso coffeemaker that ...I WAS a satisfied, 11+ year owner of a Capresso coffeemaker that still worked, but it was showing signs that it was probably a good idea to be replaced before it was too late. So, being a very satisfied, long-term owner of a Capresso, I ordered this latest edition without reading the reviews. Big mistake. The 465 CT Capresso makes the absolute worst coffee I ve ever had the displeasure of sipping! Unbelievably disappointing considering the long, happy relationship with my previous Capresso coffeemaker! I used the same brand coffee beans (shipped directly to my home from the company located just outside San Francisco) for 16+ years. I tried everything to remove what I thought might be the cause . I ran water through the machine s brewing cycle several times in a row. I handwashed the insulated carafe, coffee filter basket and holder with Dawn, rinsing thoroughly. I even removed the charcoal filter thinking it might be the culprit for such a vile brew (I always use filtered water, so didn t really need it anyway). Nothing worked. Even when I tasted the coffee lukewarm, the temperature when tastebuds work best, the near total absence of coffee flavor was startling! It actually tasted like dirty water with metallic undertones. Also, the design of the insulated carafe is extremely poor. It is awkward to handle, there is a large hangover inside at the top that traps the last of the brewed coffee, which is nearly impossible to get out without making a splattering mess, and the carafe lid traps water INSIDE the lid when simply rinsed off (not immersed) and must be drained. Less than a week after this coffeemaker was delivered, UPS was picking it up for a return and a full refund. No way was I opting for a replacement. Sorry Capresso, you lost a once very satisfied customer.P.S.: I ve taken my old Capresso out of retirement until I can find a suitable replacement. Thinking it s going to be a challenge to find one as excellent as the older version has proved, let alone one that will last as long it has. 1Good, But This One's Not Our FavoriteLongtime Capresso users. This is our third unit in 10 or 12 years. The bean container cannot be removed, so switching between regular and decaf beans is not easy. (We drink coffee morning and night.) It does a great job of grinding (the burr style grinder that Capresso uses is so-o-o much better than blade grinders you see everywhere.) The thermal carafe doesn't seem to keep the coffee warm for as long as previous models, but it's not bad. The biggest problem with the carafe is when pouring out that last cup (We usually drink to the last drop): you have to turn the carafe almost completely upside down to the the last of the coffee out. This is the worst design go a carafe I've ever encountered. I don't remember having that problem with the previous models.But it's a good coffee maker. I love the Capresso coffee makers. Way better than others I've used. 4
