Customer Reviews

Seems well made but makes a weak brewOverall, I was pleased to find a 'stainless steel' percolator that includes what appears to be a stainless basket and stem. It appears to be well made, and It's also a nice looking pot with a blue light that comes on when the coffee is ready. However, after brewing a pot of Starbucks Sumatra coffee which is a pretty strong dark blend, using this percolator, the coffee was surprisingly weak. Tweaking the amount didn't seem to help. Using the same Starbucks blend but less coffee grinds in a drip, the coffee came out amazingly strong! Coffee brewed in the Capresso was hot and I love a cup of HOT coffee! I personally did not notice a metallic taste that was mentioned in another review. However, I did make sure to initially allow water to boil in the pot and let it sit for a while to clean it before using it to brew coffee. Maybe that helped? The Capresso is made in China like everything else, so perhaps the stainless used isn't food grade? That's an interesting point and something to consider or verify. For example: If 405, the number following Capresso stands for the type of stainless steel used, and not the model number, 405 stainless is a ferritic stainless steel. Type 405 contains 12% chromium with aluminum added to prevent hardening. Ferritic stainless steels generally have better engineering properties than austenitic grades, but have reduced corrosion resistance, because of the lower chromium and nickel content. They are also usually less expensive. Ferritic stainless steels have a body-centered cubic crystal system and contain between 10.5% and 27% chromium with very little nickel, if any, but some types can contain lead.As for the weak brew, perhaps it needs a longer perk time or a different stem basket to resolve the weak coffee issue? In addition, the coffee maker I received looked like a previous return. Perhaps the previous owner had the same issue with weak coffee? Mine also went back :( 3Good hot coffee! This is for the Capresso 8 cup electric percolator. First, it's a very nice perk and makes good coffee. However compared to other methods of perking it does fall short. Probably my preferred method is stove top. You are in complete control, the speed of the perk, time etc. However you do have to attend it the whole time. And as with all modern day percolators including the Capresso, the holes are too big which allows grounds in the coffee. The second method i have used is a vintage 1955 Sunbeam, a great coffee maker! 400 watts for a nice slow perk, small holes in the basket so next to no grounds, you can use a filter but isn't necessary. The down side is it does take about 16 minutes to brew 8 cups, which I didn't mind. The worst thing though is how long can you expect a 60+ year old electric appliance to work? It quit after a short while which led me to purchase the Capresso. Like I said, it's a very nice maker. I think using 900 watts it is fast, a little over 1 minute per cup, but that in my mind is a problem. It perks too hard. So bigger holes or in this case, slots are needed, which means more grounds in the coffee. I tried a disc filter once, forget it! I gave it more than ample time at the end of the cycle to drain the basket. When I removed the lid, the basket was still full of coffee water. No amount of coaxing with a spoon handle would allow it to finish draining. I do not recommend filters for this percolator. Just put up with a few grounds as with all perked coffee, I never minded that but people have gotten so used to drip filtered coffee that it could be an issue for some.Overall I like the Capresso perk and would recommend it to a friend. 4I love this thing. This machine makes an amazing cup of coffee. It looks so much better on my counter than the bulky drip coffeemaker. I paired it with a smart plug so all I have to do is prep it the night before and tell my echo to start my day to turn it on. Fancypants. I use CDM regular grind and actually have to use less coffee than the recommended amount because it makes a STRONG cup. 5Makes great perc coffee, just don't expect it to last long.First of all, I'm an electrical engineer AND I love perked coffee. I've had a few of these electric percolators. I have mine connected with a remote control timer so I can start making coffee while I'm still in bed. I set it up the night before. Electrically they are all the same. Some are constructed slightly differently. This one worked great for almost a year. It's supposed to perc the coffee for around 7 minutes then go to "keep warm". What happens is that the device that senses the temperature and switches the percolator to "keep warm" is a cheap piece of junk. This device slowly degrades. When this happens, the percolator will switch back to percolate while in "keep warm". You will wind up with a pot of mud. And, be lucky that you get at least get a year. Usually other weak/poorly made parts will break first. They are: either heating element, internal connections, power cord socket, etc. Or, buy a stainless steel stove top percolator, use the correct ratio of coffee/water, time the perk for 7 minutes and let it stand for 2 minutes. Enjoy ! 3Makes excellent tasting coffee and is overall as quick as the ...This percolator is superb!! Makes excellent tasting coffee and is overall as quick as the Keurig it replaced for delivering 12 cups of coffee without the hassle of feeding the cups one at the time. As advertised, this percolator has nothing but stainless steel and Teflon in contact with the coffee it makes as the plastic retainer ring in the top never contacts the coffee. The wife absolutely loves it. Could not have made a better purchase and could not be more pleased with the quality and performance of this coffee maker. Highly recommend it to any one wanting to perk coffee in a fully stainless steel percolator.l 5Lid and Spout IssuesThis is a breautiful coffee pot. I had a Cuisinart for years so that s what I m comparing it to. The lid has to be locked or the hot coffee and metal coffee basket falls out. The pouring spout is small and at the top so you have to tip the whole pot almost horizontal to get the coffee out. I m returning it because for me, if someone else uses it there s the chance of them getting scalded. It makes great coffee, but the lock issue and the pouring spout are too big of issues to keep it. I m going back to the better designed Cuisanart percolator 3Glass perk top!Looks great, does a great job and is quiet when in warm mode and not really that loud when perking. The only one I could find with a glass perk top. A hint on getting the top on and off without difficulties: make sure to line up the lock/unlock symbol on the top with the black dot that's over the handle. If it's lined up, the top goes on and off without a struggle ~ took us a bit to find that black dot. 5Great cup of joe, JoeIn my book this coffee pot makes a great, hot cup of joe. I am not a coffee snob and have tried many coffee makers. This one is aces over kings. 5Not like stove top perked coffee but good.I have used a stove top percolator for a long time but it was only an 8 cup (which is really just 6 servings) but needed a larger pot since I have more coffee drinkers around now. I like this percolator because it has a glass watch top and no aluminum. I liked that it made 12 cups quickly and I like that it had a warmer if I used it at the table. It is not like stove top coffee, there is no way to extend the brewing time to make it stronger and the coffee is pretty much warm but not really hot and the warmer keeps it just that, warm, not hot. Its very well constructed and the slim design makes it easy to pour. I wish I had gotten a larger 12 cup stove top percolator instead though. 4Frightening comparisonAfter assessing all the percolators offered, I selected this model due to being 100% stainless steel and glass. I used it for about a month and noticed there was always an odd smell in my kitchen, rather than the aroma of coffee. I purchased a Westbend percolator at a local discount store and tried them out side by side. What I found was worrisome. I used identical cups and poured the same amount of coffee from each percolator into the individual cups. They appeared to be about the same strength and the same temperature. But when I poured out the 2 cups at the end, I got a shock. The coffee from the Capresso percolator left a dark stain in the cup which was not easily removed. The identical cup holding the coffe from the Westbend percolator left nothing in the cup. At that time, I packed up the Capresso. I have no idea what caused the stain or the odd odor, but I don't choose to use it. 3
