Customer Reviews

Does its job well, but has some annoying featuresIt is really good automatic steeper (while not many of this kind in the market), although may be too expensive. For perfectionist it can be a torture - so many small imperfections.PROS:Nice quality materialsBrews tea as expectedDelayed start featureCONS:Feature "Keep warm" switches off after some short timeAlso "keep warm" switches off every time you lift the kettle from base.Display only shows temperature when boiling and steeping, does not display it after.Notification sound is a cheap high-pitch beeper.Buttons sometimes work on first pressing, sometimes need to press twice - still did not undertand when and why 3Not impressedWe really liked it at first, however it quit working after only 3 months. The customer service department either won't answer the phone or has a recorded message informing the customer that due to high call volume you have to try back another time. No email option from website only the same troubleshooting that's in the manual. 1We use this thing constantly.I use this to boil water for baby bottles, make tea with teabags, and also tea with the included basket. The carafe is so convenient and comfy to hold, we just bring the pot of Sleepytime into the bedroom at night for all night refills.I recently broke the carafe of the one we had for years, and it was like losing a family member for a few days til this one shipped out. Luckily, unlike family members, you can order a new beloved Breville on Amazon. The carafe isn't easy to break, by the way. It fell from pretty high up and smashed. If you do break it, they don't sell a replacement. You have buy the whole setup again. Interestingly, they sell the base as a replacement part, but not the glass carafe. 5UPDATE: Very DisappointedI bought this to replace a Breville glass Electric Kettle, which I liked in spite of constant problems with the lid (the total failure of the auto shut off feature was the kicker). I liked the idea of being able to set it up to brew automatically in the AM, and the keep warm feature.PRO: Set it up, push a button and it does the rest...giving you a little extra time in the morning for other things. The standard brew programs made very weak tea (using high quality loose leaves) BUT it is very easy to set up the custom button to brew to your preferences. If you need as much help as possible pre-caffeine this may be for you.CON: Plastic-y smell. It's been nearly a month and it hasn't abated. Possibly a deal breaker. Also the "Keep Warm" function is pretty useless: apparently if the tea/water temp drops below 112 it shuts off automatically. This seems to happen quickly. So it doesn't really do much to keep it warm, and will likely have shut off when you go back for your second cup. Boo.UPDATE: After 5 months the plastic odor/taste is still ruining my tea. The tea from this has never tasted as good as the tea I used to make with a stainless filter. Considering that the 'keep warm' feature barely works, there is really no upside. I experience the disappointment anew every morning. I am looking forward to the day it breaks so I can get rid of it without feeling guilty. 1Not working properlyDon't get me wrong. I loved the tea maker when it worked. Unfortunately within a few months the tea basket would go up and down instead of stay immersed in the hot water. When I called breville they said I must have gotten it wet. Unplug it and turn them upside down for 24-72 hours. It took 72 hours and voila...it started working properly again. Within a week after that it went back to the same old nonsense. I have a jerry rigged a solution but it isn't a great solution. I definitely lived it when it worked. Breville customer service....not so much. 2My favorite appliance!I LOVE this machine! My absolute favorite appliance in the kitchen. It works so well, it is quite, easy to use, makes fantastic tea, and really is a tea lovers dream. I'm primarily a black tea drinker and for that, the variable temp control is less useful as one can boil water in many other ways, but the constant temperature during steeping and the convenience of setting it and walking away til it is done is great. I have especially felt this convenience when making tea for guests. In the past tea making was a multi-step process that required me to step away from the party to set water boiling, again to pour over leaves, and again to get the tea after having timed it. Now I can simply set it up and walk away knowing that it will alert me when it is all ready! [A word about guests: I prefer to offer my friends a variety of teas. The one draw back to the Breville vs my old method is one can only make one kind of tea at a time. So either I use the tea maker simply as a hot water kettle and make tea by the mug or smallish pot or I make one kind at a time. So I decided to hold on to my old hot water kettle so that if several guests want one kind I can make it in the Breville while the one or two that desire a different kind can have theirs made individually with water from the kettle. It is a rare logistical issue, but it does happen from time to time].The Tea Maker has also given me a great appreciation for green and oolong teas. Green in particular was never "my cup of tea" ;) but after using the Breville Tea Maker I can really say that it makes a world of difference having it steeped at the proper temperature and not scalded by boiling water! The same goes for Oolong and White teas. Now, obviously, it is pricey and was a total splurge/birthday money kind of purchase. But it is totally worth it. I use it several times a day and I've owned it for a little over six months and it still works great. For care and maintenance I've used the "Revive tea cleaner" product to clean it and I've used more homemade solutions and both work fine to get rid of the residue that develops after continued use. However the Revive stuff really is super easy and makes it gleam like new.Several reviewers have warned that this is a fragile item and, as it is made of glass, I can only imagine that is true! I've not dropped it or smashed it against anything and I warn everyone who might be tempted to wash it (like my wife or in-laws) that the base of the carafe is not to get wet and that has effectively scared all away from touching it but me :) So I'm careful to not mishandle it and all has been well.I love this tea maker and can't imagine going back to a world before it. I miss it when I'm on vacation! If you are someone who loves the ritual of tea making, this will of course not really be up your alley. But for those of you who sometimes want to enjoy that ritual and often just want a good, bold cuppa? Spring for the Breville, it is well worth the expense.Man, all this reviewing has me hankering for some tea, thankfully I've got some brewing in the kitchen as I type!Cheers! 5GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY!I have had three of these Breville pots before this one. I used to buy them at Bed B+B but since they no longer guarantee replacement of items no question as they used to I no longer go there. I make lots of tea, 3 to 5 pots a day. Each and every one of these pots failed at 13 months in. One month after the manufacturers warranty expires. While the product works well, when it works it's shortcoming is in its longevity. Granted that the other electric tea pots that I have tried have failed in a similar period of time I find it unacceptable that an item costing more than $225 is disposable after a year. Do yourself a favor, BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY . You will thank me later. PS, no other tea pot out there is a set it and forget it automatic pot. Others require you to manually steep the tea, this is automatic. 4Nirvana for the tea loverUpdate 12/3/2017: I have now owned this tea maker for just over 4 years and it still works as new and I still love it. I use it daily to make tea.I don't know how to add to all the other reviewers, many of them have said it all.I love tea, I am obsessed with tea. I drink everything from black, oolong, green, white and yellow teas. I do not like overly flavored teas.I have been using a temperature controlled kettle for quite some time. It has all the settings on the handle for the different temps. It was a must for me. I still use it to make certain teas and if I just want a smaller cup.The minimum to make in the tea maker is 500 ml, or 16 ounce. But I had wanted this tea maker for a while so I saved up my points and gift cards for it. I have had it now for about 2 months. I use it daily starting out with morning tea I set up the night before. Its so lovely to wake up to perfectly steeped tea in the morning. I think this is the only fully automatic tea maker on the market.I love how it works with that magnet thingy. Its just neat. Best though is that the basket is large and lets the leafs expand. This was important for me before getting this machine and it still is important now. Especially when one makes large leaf teas. They need space.I love the custom settings for each tea variety. It also remembers them the next time you make tea. I am very particular about my tea and how long to steep it. I have some blacks on 3 minutes, some on 2, some on 2:30 and so on.I re-steep my oolongs many times and its so easy with this machine. I make 2 cups and then just lift out the basket, pour more water in, basket back in and make more tea. And I can keep adding more time to each additional steep. So for me it is perfect. Did I really need this to make perfect tea? Course not. The tea kettles with different temps settings are fine devices. Just make sure to steep so the leafs can have lots of space. I still use my kettle for smaller amounts. But I really just wanted this. I wanted the timer, and the ease. And it makes tea just as perfect than the other careful methods with proper temps. And that was most important to me. That the tea tastes great, and it does. 5Buyer beware!I purchased this July 2017. You would think a product would last longer than 6 months. Every other time that I use this I get re set errors. What a pain. When it does work the water never gets hot enough. Waisted money. Bought my daughter the Mr. Coffee tea maker and it works great! Think before you buy this one! 1An automatic tea maker that actually works wellBrewing good tea is finicky. You need just the right temperature for steeping it; the tea leaves need to have room to breathe; and you must absolutely, positively take them out at the right time. Other than that, it's easy. This appliance tries to take the art out of tea making. I mean that in a good way. You tell it "tea, black, medium", pour in the water and put in the tea leaves, and it does the rest. (If you're fancy, you can say "180 degrees, 3:30 minutes" instead.) It heats the water, drops the tea basket into it, leaves it there for the allotted time, pulls it out again, and beeps. You pour the tea. It can keep what's left warm for you.It works surprisingly well, actually. Even delicate green teas come out flavorful and fresh. Black teas are not over-steeped (unless you ask for that, of course). You can make a single mug (aka two tea cups) just fine - even though only the bottom of the basket is in the water, infusion still works well. Or you can make a dozen cups; there's a mode that keeps moving the basket up and down in the water to ensure maximum contact. To me, the best feature of this device is also, perhaps, controversial. It automates the tea making process; you can set it up, walk away, and when it beeps, your tea is ready to enjoy. It takes the ceremony out of the tea-making. Without the lifting-the-basket-when-it-is-time feature, you pretty much have to stand there and watch the tea brew. A minute of contemplation and reflection, all wiped out by technology. I guess that's progress...Of course nothing is perfect. The carafe itself cleans up easily, but the spent tea leaves will cling tenaciously to the inside of the metal basket, requiring vigorous scrubbing with a suitable kitchen brush to get them out. That's mildly annoying. Perhaps Breville should design a custom-shaped brush to go with this basket. (Perhaps someone else should?) Of course, you can let the tea dry in its basket and then it'll drop right out, but that would take hours.Five stars for the quality of the tea, the design, and the general convenience. Minus one star for the annoyance of cleaning up the tea basket afterwards. A very good device. Recommended even for picky tea drinkers.Cheers -- perry 4
