Customer Reviews

Quick sharp edge for your kitchen knives.Works great. Hones knifes quickly, but is not a substance for a sharpener. Won't make them "razor sharp", but good enough to shave the hair off your arm. A good solution for all but the pickiest users. Barkeeper's friend can be used to clean once the rod turns grey; that will restore honing ability to the rod. 5Best deal going for a ceramic rod sharpener. These are fabulous sharpeners. I have bought at least 10 of these things and at what they cost if someone admires it I can just tell them to keep it, I have more. lol 5Great honing rod, better than steel ones. Be warned: this won't sharpen a dull knife -- keeps sharp knives sharpA great ceramic rod for steeling your knives. The ceramic is very smooth and doesn't have any imperfections. After a few uses, it does become "loaded up" with metal shavings (it gets silver/grey streaks) but this is easily rectified with any eraser (just erase them out).Keep in mind this won't sharpen a dull knife, but rather is intended to keep a sharp knife sharp. If your knife is quite sharp, but you can't push-cut through a tomato or a piece of paper (meaning push the knife through instead of sawing at it), then you need to straighten the edge using one of these. If your knife is straight up dull, you need some other sharpening method as this won't get it.I would estimate the grit of this as ... I don't know, 2000? It's pretty fine. Doesn't feel rough at all. 5I really love the nice finished edge the ceramic puts on the ...I really love the nice finished edge the ceramic puts on the blades. I have a kitchen of razors in various sizes and shapes so everyone tells me. But a dull knife is a lot more dangerous than a sharp one. 5Really cheap way to bring a knife back from the deadI'm not huge into sharpening knives. I've read other reviews, and in some of those reviews, other reviewers are talking about using multiple sharpeners and stuff. I'm not that guy. I was just looking for 1 rod. I bought this. It's a ceramic rod that comes to about 7 inches not including the handle. It does a really good job at sharpening knives. Longer knives will be a pain because it's just too short. Many knives will be a pain because it's just too short. This isn't designed for someone spending long days sharpening knives. This is designed for someone like me. Someone who was looking through Amazon Prime items for a really cheap ceramic sharpening rod to bring a knife back from the dead. It'll make knives sharp if you sharpen them properly. I mainly bought it because I have a flat choppy kitchen knife that my girlfriend used to the point that it won't chop anymore. I'm not a knife guy so I can't really describe it well - it has a flat blade and it's good at choppy motions, and after 2 minutes of googling, I think it's a santoku knife. Fits the bill. But that knife was so dull it'd pop tomatoes, and I tasked myself with making that puppy useful again.Anywho, I bought this for that, and after running it through a dozen passes on each side, I was using the little santoku knife like a letter opener, crisply cutting every letter I could find. And it was crisp. Just a nice crisp line through paper. I held up a banana with my right hand and santoku-ed that banana with my left hand, cleaning cutting that banana down piece by piece. Then I ate that banana. I cleaned off the knife and dried it with a microfiber cloth. Guess what happened to that cloth? Santoku-ed. And I almost cut my finger off. I lost skin. I tried to see if I could actually cut that microfiber cloth so I rubbed it against, but went a little too fast and the cloth gave really easily and the next point of resistance was my finger, but by that point I was pumping the brakes.Anyways, I give this thing 5 stars. It's super cheap and for anyone just trying to bring a knife back from the dead, this thing will make it almost razor sharp. And for someone like myself who isn't a knife guy, almost razor sharp and razor sharp are pretty much the same exact thing. It'll make a knife so sharp it'll cut through paper without grabbing and tearing that paper. Super sharp. For super cheap. 5 stars. 5Great sharpening rodIf you're looking for a great sharpening tool, then to is it. First you must know that this product is not going to fix a very full knife. This product only works when your knife is sharp and you keep it sharp. If your knife is dull then you'll need to get a stone type sharpener first, this product is more for finishing. I always use this product after a few uses of my knife to keep it simple. Would recommend this product especially for the price. 5Simple and effective for a couple of bucks. It's a simple and smooth ceramic rod, which I prefer over diamond coated steels because it will NEVER wear out. And I know because I've been using this one A LOT for a few years now and it shows zero signs of wear. Naturally, it will get dirty with black streaks from the steel you're sharpening, so when this happens just clean it off with soap and water to keep its surface more effective rather than clogged up with steel residue.I don't know what the grit equivalent is, but it does its work rather slowly and leaves an edge that's not quite polished, but with micro serrations, IMO, the best of both worlds. When on sale, I'd suggest buying a few and leaving them "here and there", i.e., one in the drawer, one in the toolbox, one in the backpack, etc.Just to note: ceramic works well because it is WAY harder than the steel it's designed to sharpen, but because it's so hard, it is brittle. Not "too" brittle though, because I've dropped it on a wooden floor a few times and it hasn't broken yet, but proper care should be taken with this caveat in mind. If lost or broken, I wouldn't hesitate to buy again. 5This is a Harry Potter wand not a porcelain steel don't buyThis has to be the biggest piece of crap I have ever purchased on Amazon I've had real Japanese porcelain steals they are nice and smooth they take a minimal metal off and they make the knife razor sharp I got this thing in the mail I used it on my pocket knife which would shave my arm first time I used it on the knife it dulled my knife it is rough bumpy and I would never purchase it again and I advise anybody not to spend the extra 20 bucks and get a real porcelain steel don't make my mistake 1Very misleading size, but a good product for the priceThe advertised size is 12", but this is very incorrect. Actual length of the exposed ceramic rod is 6.75" and the overall length is 11.25".Rod is very functional and hones my knives to a razor edge, roughly equivalent to a 2200 grit stone in my estimation. As others have noted, angle is important, you need to learn how to use it.At 6.75", it's not very convenient when sharpening a larger kitchen knife. It will work, but you have to go a lot slower and more carefully. I have a Smith's 9" Oval Ceramic Rod on order. At $10 with a big handle and longer length, it looks like it would be a lot better for a kitchen.By the way, when your rod gets loaded up with metal filings and you need to clean it off, Barkeepers Friend on a scrub pad will get it mostly clean, or a "Super Metal/Rust Eraser" will do the job even better.Despite the misleading description, it is a very functional product for the $6 price and I think it was a great deal. I'll probably be ordering another couple in the future to put into travel boxes.-- UPDATE 2/16/2016 --3 1/2 years later, and I'm still using this rod for quick touch ups. when it starts getting gunked up with metal fillings, I clean it off some with a magic eraser or a scouring pad. I still recommend this little rod for the price as a great inexpensive touch up rod. 5If you have any skill at sharpening a blade you will be just fine. Great price for the productFinishes my knives off and keeps them sharp between uses. Is it short? Yes, but not too short. If you have any skill at sharpening a blade you will be just fine. Great price for the product. 5
