You Need Scale PreventionI hope this rating remains the same over the years. I just installed this scale preventer, as it was recommended by technical support associated with EcoSmart tankless hot water heaters. My five year old tankless died (because of scale) and the vendor recommended that I install this unit on the cold water source line to prevent the same thing from happening again. I've read good things about this unit and look forward to many years of service. The photo shows my setup. Wish I had known about this from the start! 5... water softener and I didn't want to remove the good minerals (and increase salt content) from our drinking waterI went with this option because it was significantly cheaper than a water softener and I didn't want to remove the good minerals (and increase salt content) from our drinking water. So far, so good, it appears that our dishes are cleaner, soaps work better, and clothes feel better (all the things the water softener sales men try to sell you on) and all for a fraction of the cost of a water softener. I didn't price out the cost difference between changing these cartridges every 6 months vs adding salt to a softener, but my guess is they are also cheaper to operate. Is this item as effective as a water softener, no, but it does a very good job at 1/10th the cost.I installed this myself using sharkbite push-to-connect fittings. It took me about 30 minutes and there were zero leaks post job. The fittings cost about $35 and saved me $200 if I had a plumber do the work (based on 2 quotes). I highly recommend the sharkbite fitting if you plan to DIY and also watch the how-to videos online. 5Before--Tanks leak every year. After--No leaks for 4 years.I was replacing my water tank every year because of leaks before I started using this. Since I started using it, we've gone 4 years without a leak, knock on wood. Anecdotal evidence, to be sure, but I'd say this is worth a try if your tank keeps leaking. You will need the adapter before you can use it. It's listed on the same page and comes with one cartridge included. We installed this directly before the hot water tank, after the rest of the cold water spits off. That means less total water going though it, and I imagine the cartridge will last longer this way. It says to replace it every 6 months, but our household are low water users, so we have been replacing it about once a year. After a year, I can shake it and still hear the chips inside, but I don't know if that means there is still active ingredient left. It's worth a try if you are at your wits end replacing water tanks. It seems to be working for us. 5So far, so good....I hardly ever post reviews, but I must review this item. I purchased this in lieu of a water softener. I have very hard water and really didn't want to deal with salt delivery, so I gave this a shot out of desperation...with low expectations. Over the years, I've tried gimmicks on the market with 0.00% results (electrical coil thing comes to mind). After two months of use, I can say that this in fact does seem to prevent about 75% of hard scale build-up. Instead of hard to remove scale and large sediment chunks in my faucet aerators, I'm seeing more of a white dust. In removal of all my aerators for inspection, I'm seeing about 75% less hard clogging scale. My dish-washer also appears to have a white dust coating inside as opposed to hard scale all over the place. My wife says that the glassware is coming out of the washer much cleaner also. So far, so good. Not sure how long this "filter" will last, but I'm fine with the cost of replacement every couple of months if that's what it takes. Might last longer, not sure yet.Btw...I installed this filter right before water enters my tank-less water heater. Installation is simple...use Sharkbite PTC fittings, tubing and make sure to add a SharkBite ball valve before and after the filter. Pretty simple installation. 5Get Aqua Crest. . Much cheaper!Works fine but way overpriced. There is an off brand filter on Amazon that is identical to this one and filters just as well but much cheaper price. You will thank me on this one. Aqua Crest 3We have SUPER HARD WATERThis really does work! I do not post reviews often, but this product is worth my time. First, a little history, so that maybe others may benefit from my experience. We have SUPER HARD WATER. I mean it eats through most faucets in 3 years. 5 years-what faucet? It is just a hole in the wall. I have installed both a gas and an electric tankless water heater. I never had any issues with the gas tankless, but with the ELECTRIC Tankless, that is a whole other story. I have a whole house filter, and right after I installed the electric tankless there were issues. Little black charcoal looking rocks began coming out of the faucets as soon as the hot water was turned on for the first few seconds. This created stopped up filters in faucets, shower heads, and all kinds of problems. I was about done with tankless. I guess the superheating of our hard water from direct contact with the elements of the heater caused them. My wife told me to just put a tank back in, and then I saw a suggestion to try this. I told my wife to let me try it, and if it doesn't work, I would put a tank back on. You do have to put this on before the water heater. I don't think it really filters, as much as treats the water. Whatever. All I care about are results. Over a period of three days, there were fewer "particles coming out of the faucets", and then there were none. We are now on week 2 with no 'rocks' coming out of the faucets at all, and my wife is in love again ... with our tankless. 5Easy as pieInstalled approximately a dozen of these descalers on new tankless heater installations. Haven't received any complaints so far. As far as installation is concerned, make it easy for yourself and install an isolation valve before the filter for ease of cartridge replacement, this is assuming you bought the valve kit for your tankless heater. Makes for a two minute replacement. Manufacturer suggests replacing every 6 months...Regardless of the descaler, flush your tankless heater once a year.... 5Definitely does the jobI replaced a instant hot-water tankless systems and during the process, I had the plumber install the connection for the Aqua-Pure filter system directly before the instant hot water system. I replace the filter every six months as recommend. I am well water and have extremely hard water with lots of iron. I use a RainSoft water treatment system, but it seems that some chemicals make it through anyway, and I still get scaling. I have found the Aqua-Pure Scale Inhibition does make a difference, cutting down significantly on the chemicals that do sneak through the RainSoft system. I can see the difference between my two showers that are on the instant hot water system and the one shower I have that is on a traditional hot water heater. So, in that regard, I am very pleased with the performance. I would give it five stars except that switching out the filters is frustrating. I purchased the specific in-line connector for this filter, and yet, with each replacement filter, I struggle to get the filter seated so that I can screw it in properly. My plumber installed a swivel system so that I can turn the pipe to make the installation easier. However, I always end up having to take a knife and shave some of the top of the filter screw threads (plastic) in order to get it to seat properly and screw in. Once I do so, it screws in easily, and I have never had a leak. 4Polyphosphate Power! ... Evil Calcium Trembles!Works with magic and unicorn tears. :o)It is not a filter. It is a water treatment system. The stainless steel head is robust and a nice solid chunk of metal. Easily could withstand brazing/soldering, on the spot, with the cartridge off.The 3/4" NPT inlet and outlet has nearly a clear flow path, so your GPM, will not be reduced. Install a ball or gate valve in front to permit easy cartridge changeouts. The tee must be orientated to the water flow, use the arrow on the side of the tee, for the water to get treated while flowing. There is an elevated tab in the tee with a single hole for directing a small portion of the water down into the center whole of the cartridge. The water slowly dissolves a small amount of food-grade polyphosphate from the beads and, using the venturi effect, the water is then pulled back through the 8 holes in the cartridge perimeter and through the 3 holes in the tee, surrounding the center tab, to mix with the flowing water.Only 2 to 3 ppm is needed to treat for scale. From past uses at a different home, I've gotten about 20,000 gallons out of a cartridge with still some beads rattling in the bottom when replacing the cartridge.I would say that if you used less than 2,000 gallons a month then one cartridge should easily last a year. The cartridge threads are plastic and you can easily cross-thread them if you get in a hurry replacing the cartridge. Just make sure you get the threads started straight and it screws up with no problems. The threads do no provide the seal, it is the o-ring so once hand-tight that is tight enough. 5Scale Inhibitor!!!!Added this filter to my Rinnai Tankless Water Heater for scale control. So far I have it for almost 7 months and its doing what it supposed to be doing. I have noticed less scale buildup around faucets & shower heads. This is my second tankless water heater, first one died cause of scale buildup in heat exchange. I was told by the plumber to help keep the heat exchange from developing buildup its a good idea to add a scale inhibitor to your tankless hot water heater. So far I am satisfied with this onto my new tankless water heater. 5
