Customer Reviews

Straight forward installAfter 30 days of use, it seems to have improved the taste. I am not in the water purification business or have the tests at home to see if the quality of the water has improved. Was fairly easy to install. I did have an issue with connecting water supply to the filter system. I had 1/4" under the sink on the cold water sink supply. Required a 3/8" in my case. Could have turned the house water off and installed a new valve to supply the filter system. I couldn't find at my local hardware an adapter to go from 1/4 to 3/8 ". I was able to use the old filter and line to temp hook up the supply of water. I now know and haven't actually bought, that in the Air Supply sections they have adapters. Plumbing sections for me weren't available. Oh, I upgraded the faucet. That was an additional cost in my case. 45 stars for water filtering system, 1 star for the adapter and installation.Short version: Nice system, but don't use the adapter they provide, get this instead: JG Speedfit ASVPP1LF 3/8-Inch by 3/8-Inch by 1/4-Inch Angle Stop Adapter Valve JG Speedfit ASVPP1LF 3/8-Inch by 3/8-Inch by 1/4-Inch Angle Stop Adapter ValveThis ended up being an installation review...I had high hopes for this filter system, and it seems good so far for the filtering itself. The water tastes ok, it's great not going through bottles, and the yearly-or-so filter replacement will be nice. BUT, the plastic T adapter they now provide with it is horrible - took me 5 hours to install, and several trips to the hardware store. The problem with the T adapter they provide is the plastic is so soft, it crosses threads very very easily. I was able to re-tap the female side with a fitting from HD, but the male side was ruined, and I barely turned the nut onto it. It's compounded by limited access under the sink to get it right, but even being very careful, once it's crossed, you're done. I tried the white plumbers' goop instead of the tape, just to let as much thread stick out, but to no avail (I still used the goop below too; I like it better than the tape.)I finally ordered the valve above, and it worked like a charm. The valve above has metal fittings, so it threads properly, and it has a nice shutoff valve, so you can shut this off separately from your sink. I have those typical chrome handle valves that once turned, they never seat again, so it will be nice to leave it alone to change the filters. As a huge bonus, it also swivels independently of its fittings, so it doesn't have to "end up" where you need it. Thread both ends as snug as you like, and then spin the valve to point the tubing where you want.I had a hard time making sure this would be the right one, because I was searching for a T or Tee like they provided, but this is an "adapter valve", not just a T. It's 3/8 inch and attached to the end of the valve coming out of the wall; the adapter that came with the system went up on the faucet end. Some of these JG adapters come with a thread size converter (this one didn't), so you can get those if you're not sure. Basically, all this water filter / coffee maker / ice maker stuff is 1/4 line, John Guest brand. Your sink fittings are generally either 3/8" or 1/2" on various ends. I figured it out from the braided line between the valve and the sink faucet.Back to the 3M Aqua-Pure system, on a separate note, the instructions are very poor. Hardly any of the hardware matches what they describe - the various nuts, washers, plates, tubing are all different. There's an insert about the different adapter. You basically have to figure it out for yourself. It's not that hard, it just takes time to know you're right. e.g., the top side needs about 3/4" clearance to get the cover on and off, so I had to remount it lower (but not too low, or you can't get the filters off). Someone with technical writing skills needs to rewrite the instructions.I also got some more water line tubing. The tube from the filter to the faucet barely reached across my 28" cabinet, with no slack. I wanted to run it away from everything else under the sink, so I needed another foot.On a positive note, the faucet handle is quite sturdy. The faucet itself felt a little flimsy installing, so I was expecting the whole thing to feel loose and cheap, but it's not. The handle turns firmly on, and firmly off. Since that's what you use 99% of the time after the installation, it's good it feels sturdy and worth all the trouble.Bottom line is 3M Aqua-Pure has a nice system, but it's too bad they're wrecking it with cheap hardware and poor instructions. 3Faucet rusts on the inside of the opening where the water comes out!!!We had to have a plumber install this as it is the requirement here in Massachusetts which jacked up the cost substantially! Also, watch the faucet head. I was wiping off the faucet with a paper towel when part of it went into the faucet opening. The paper towel was gross! I started sticking Q!-tips up the faucet and they were coming out very dark brown/black!!! It appears that it has been rusting all this time and going into the water we have been drinking!!! I can't see into the faucet but I guess I have to go out and buy another faucet! NOT acceptable to me! 2Easy to install for great tasting waterSo far I love this filter system. We have terrible city water, and It really makes the water taste great. It also has a good flow rate. The faucet appears well made and seems like it will last. You will likely need to buy an adapter to hook this up to your cold water tap (it comes with a 1/2" plastic adapter and most people will have a 3/8". I got a brass 3/8" to 3/8" and 1/4" tee from home depot, exactly like this Watts LFPBAV-664 Adapt-a-Valve Compression 3/8-Inch x 3/8-Inch x 1/4-Inch). It is very easy to install, and the cartridges are very easy to change out. I've only used it for a week so far, so we'll see how it holds up over time. The only negative thing I have to say is the lame plastic adapter, and the all plastic tubes and system. I'm no a fan of plastic in the drinking system, but I've detected zero plastic taste. Also this filter won't help with hard water, but it makes it taste great. 5Pleased so far, easy install, instruction manual could be better. This is an review just of installation and other points, I just got this so I can't really speak to longevity.Firstly, i have seen some reviews say they got one type of faucet(shortish with a black tip, and some get another(tall all chrome). I got the chrome one. I think there are two versions of the kit out there, one from 3M(tall chrome) and one from Cuno(shortish black tip). They are same exact thing aside from the faucet they give you i think.Anyway..while the install is pretty easy and straight forward the manual for this product is confusing and a bit out of date. It could use a rewrite. I recommend watching this video on YouTube, it coveys how simple the install is. https://youtu.be/BhdfFndkEjo . Took 30 to 45min to install, no leaks or drips, water from faucet has a good flow rate. Tastes fine.Pro's so far:-easy install-no drilling of existing pipes, good for a renter like myself, just swaped out the sprayer with the faucet.-relatively small space footprint, does not require a largish reservoir tank.-wastes no water, RO systems waste 3 gallons to make 1 gallon of water(just what I read, and living in CA this is a factor i considered).-good flow rate-no more carafes!Cons.-Mediocre, out of date instructions.-Higher cost per gallon than RO filtration.-filters replacement guidlines are unclear, says 650gallons on place, 6months in another. Since it will automatically shut down until the filters are replaced at that point I'm hoping its not the 6months...I will not have used 650 gallons by then.-Water probably not quite as nice as RO, you can't brag to your friends when they come by and ask for a glass of water. But hey, if you have friends who demand RO water you need to get some new friends. 4Water is Crystal Clear.....Instructions not so muchAccuracy of Product Description 3/5Main reason that I'm giving the description a rating of 3/5 stars is because technically this isn't the Aqua-Pure AP-DWS1000, it's the Aqua-Pure AP-DWS1000LF. The difference is that the "LF" version doesn't include the faucet. So that faucet that you see in all of the product images - yep, not included. Instead you get a shiny chrome faucet, which was fine (I can post a product link / photo of the faucet the system comes with if someone is curious) - but it would have been nice to know that so I didn't spend 20 minutes searching the internet for why I received a different faucet.Packing 5/5The system arrived very well packed and all the items were wrapped in loose plastic to prevent scuffing.Functionality 5/5Functionality is why I bought this specific filter. Even though this system isn't the highest rated, nor the most popular, brand on Amazon I went with this one because when it came to water quality/taste it seemed (in my opinion) to have the best reviews. It was/is also rated #2 in undersink water filtration systems by Consumer Reports. Note the #1 filtration system is about 3 times the price of this one.Instructions 2/5The instructions........if this isn't the first review you've read for the Aqua-Pure AP-DWS1000 you will most likely have an idea as to where I'm going with this. It's not that the instructions are the worst you'll ever read, because they aren't *that* bad. The issue with the instructions is that they are out-of-date - by at least 2 years. I ended up using another Amazon review (posted September 30, 2012) to help me figure out where the "saddle valve" that the instructions kept mentioning was.Spoiler: There's no saddle valve. What you receive instead is called a "Feed water connector." Stock image of the feedwater connector: (stock photo: http://i.imgur.com/Zn2HH0f.jpg ). This is a picture of what you receive instead of the saddle valve: http://i.imgur.com/sFvUoW1.jpg (my apologies for not having a better picture of the part, I didn't think I was going to write a review during the installation. I'll get into the reasons why I have this one picture shortly). Main things to know about the piece you get instead of a saddle-valve: both the inlet and the outlet are 3/4" (this tidbit isn't listed anywhere on the part, I had to measure). For your own sanity I highly recommend measuring the connections to your water pipes before getting too far into this, mine are 1/2" and resulted in having to make a trip to the hardware store mid-installation, hence my taking a picture of the part next to my flex hose. The other item regarding the instructions that I want to touch on is the "blue tubing" that gets mentioned with the faucet assembly. There is no blue tubing. Because you get a different faucet than what the product actually comes with there is no blue tubing (it's white, and attached to the faucet assembly).Key takeaways for the Aqua-Pure AP-DWS1000 Drinking Water System:- it's truly is a great filtration system- the instructions are out-dated. If you know going into the installation that they aren't the best it makes the installation process easier.- There is NO saddle-valve- You can absolutely install this yourself (note: I did not have to drill a hole in my counter top since I was replacing an undersink soap dispenser, so I can't comment on whether drilling the hole is something you can DIY).Edit: Found a stock photo for the feed water connector, added it to the bit where I talk about it not being the saddle-valve. 4It was easy enough to installIt was easy enough to install, except for the fact that my sink line is 3/8 inch not 1/2 inch which they supplied HW for. I had to make a trip to the HW store to go buy a couple of parts to adapt to my stink which is pretty standard. If it wasn't for the above e problem I would rate it 4 stars. The reason it doesn't get 5 is water flow is pretty low but you sort of expect that through so many filters. 2Excellent water filterThe water tastes great, flow rate is good, and the price is very good for what it does. If you're considering water filters--particularly for young children, elderly people, or someone who's immunocompromised--don't be fooled by empty promises. Make sure to read the Performance Data Sheet before buying to see what the unit really does. Our relatives paid a lot more for a machine that made insane promises about improving your health but wasn't even tested by any independent lab. Don't be fooled by these scams, including water "ionizers" that really do nothing but empty your wallet. This filter is the real thing, tested and NSF certified to remove chlorine, lead, cysts, MTBE, and VOCs. See here for more details: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/BISS/Guides/3M/B000WR0PWE.performancedata.pdf. 5Great filter, frustrating installWonderful faucet, well built, main filters easy to hang on under-sink wall, very difficult to find waterline compression adapters that will fit my sink's cold-water supply hose. Finally found an adapter by Watts that will screw into my cold-water line and offer a line out for the Aqua-Pure's 1/8" tube to the filters. BUT, the Watts adapter came with a California cancer warning!! Aqua-Pure should supply multiple-sized adapters for different water lines. Now, I'm out trying to find another connection that will work with this filter system. The unit itself is great. This is the 3rd under sink filter system I've installed and this is by far superior to the other brands. The water-line adapter ordeal however is very frustrating and has taken up a lot of my time. 4I personally like the filter but want to point out that the ...I personally like the filter but want to point out that the faucet assembly included is in my opinion not the highest quality .All internal parts of the faucet assembly are plastic. The old faucet i have has all internal parts made of some type of metal. Why plastic is not good? well... go and buy the generic 1/4" plastic tubbing and your local hardware store and read the label. The label on my tubbing reads " WARNING This product contains a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer , birth defects and other reproductive harm".PLEASE NOTE I DID NOT FIND ANY ALARMING LABEL ON THE AQUAPURE FILTER UNIT OR FAUCET ITSELF. But I wanted to point out that plastic is not the best material to use. And whenever possible its use should be reduced. Also in my experience most of the plastic items we buy come with some kind of unknown lubrican finish on them from the factory. 4
